Oakville Venom teams have plenty of momentum as they host a bantam girls’ basketball tournament this weekend. The AAA bantam squad is coming off a gold-medal performance at the Brantford CYO Tournament last week- end, its second tournament title of the season. The AA team, meanwhile, won silver at the same tournament. This weekend’s Oakville Basketball Club tournament tipped off this morning and will conclude with semifinal and final contests tomorrow (Sunday) at Abbey Park High School. In Brantford, the AAA Venom won all four of its games, improving to 9-0 against Ontario competition this season. Oakville downed Valhalla, Dundas, Welland and Blessed Sacrament, as Jovana Momic and Emily Wilk earned division 1 MVP honours. Also contributing were Rachelle Cyrus, Courtney Den Elzen, Alex Ruscica, Nina Guzina, Kayla Davis, Courtney Chambers, Sarah Traynor, Leah Fleming and Rasheeka Gunn. Coaches are Pat Traynor and Cassandra Cyrus. The AA Venom, meanwhile, went 2-1 in division play before downing Port Colbourne in the semifinal. Oakville was denied gold with a loss to Ancaster in the championship game. Lydia Gibson was named the Venom’s tournament MVP. Other members of the AA squad are Alyssa Booth, Nicole Fernandes, Rebecca Forbes, Morgan Caissie, Sabrina Glavota, Charlotte Walker, Sera Smith, Laura D’aurizio, Holly Rowe, Kristina Rajacic and Marissa Wiebe. Bryan Rajacic and Evon Forbes coach the team. Midget Venom also champs The Venom midgets also won gold at the Brantford tournament, rallying from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat the Welland Saints 49-43 in overtime of the title game. The comeback completed a perfect tournament showing for Oakville, which also defeated Mississauga, Flamborough, Brantford and Hamilton Transway dur- ing the competition. Players on the team include Ellie Hannaford, Ruta Rekus, Nevena Aksin, Amanda Swinhoe, Larisa Saplys, Selena Singh, Marti Killeen, Nicole Garcia, Kayla Harnden, Brittney Phannenhour, Lea Kirkconnell and Alia Tewari. Bill Killeen and Charles Singh are the club’s coaches. Oakville’s novices almost became the fourth local team to medal at the tourna- ment, reaching the bronze-medal game before falling 17-14 to St. Catharines. The Venom went 3-0 in preliminary-round play and was the top seeed heading into the semifinals, but it was upset 26-22 by Scarborough. Maggie Curran, Chloe Dickison, Stephanie Findlay, Anastasia Levreault, Ashley McDonald, Ellen Ougrinov, Sarah Piercey, Kiana Steinhauer, Caroline Szustak, Jordan Tracey, Olivia Wilson and Melody Wyslobicky all contributed to the Venom’s strong showing.
