Kota, 20 tribals from Naxal heart-land clear JEE
Kota: (K. Abbasy) Around 20 tribal students, including eight
girls, from the Maoist-affected Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh,
have cracked the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) 2018,
thanks to coaching provided by a Kota-based institute under
a government project.
The results of the JEE Main 2018 for admissions to under-
graduate engineering and architecture courses, mainly in 31
National Institutes of Technology (NITS) and 23 Indian Institute
of Information Technology (IIITS), were announced on April 30.
Under the ‘Choo Lo Aasman’ project of the Chattisgarh gov-
ernment, Career Point Institute of Kota provided coaching to
40 tribal students of Dantewada, of whom 20 have qualified
for JEE Advanced.
Gayatri Dhruv (17), daughter of a police constable, has got All
India Rank 5158 in the scheduled tribe category of JEE Mains.
“There was no professional coaching facility available in
Dantewada for IIT-JEE. The project ‘Choo Lo Aasman’ has
come as a boon for tribal kids who are provided coaching
at Dantewada,” said Dhruv of Bijapur village, around 4 km
from the district headquarters.
She has been taking free coaching from the Career Point’s
center at Dantewada for the last 2 years.
“Naxalites do not allow education to kids in the rural areas, so
coaching for IIT-JEE was a dream for tribal kids like us,” said
Rahul Mandavi (20), who has got AIR 7000 in the ST catego-
ry.
“Government has provided a bus for taking tribal kids for coach-
ing to the ‘Choo Lo Aasman’ project center at Dantewada,” said
Mandavi, son of a government clerk from Chote Gudra village.
Asked about the teaching experience, Ashutosh Kumar (26),
a faculty member of the coaching institute, said, “When we
were sent from Kota to Dantewada, we were initially scared of
Naxal terror. Later we got adapted to it and are now comfort-
able here.” Free coaching, he said, is provided to only gov-
ernment school students. Pramod Maheshwari, the chief exec-
utive officer of Career Point Institute in Kota, said the Chhattisgarh
government signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU)
with the institute to start ‘Choo Lo Aasman’ project a couple of
years ago. The institute charges subsidized fees from the State
government for coaching.
“The aim is to ensure quality education to the kids of Naxalite-
affected areas and bring their families to the mainstream, and
promote talent among rural kids,” he said. “Our 14 faculty mem-
bers and staff are staying in Dantewada.”

“It pains me to see that
Rajasthan as one of the top
ranking states in the country
with respect to fatality due to
road accidents. Accidents do
not come with an invitation and
each accident is avoidable. It
is just a matter of taking sim-
ple precautions like wearing
helmets and seat belts while
driving two wheelers and four
wheelers respectively.”
“CSR is a Collective Social
Responsibility. It should be a
part of self-regulation, which
changes and benefits the soci-
ety in the long run. I believe
that the ‘C’ in CSR stands for
‘Character.
Unless there are genuine inten-
tions to change the society, the
impact of the CSR would never
be assessed. This is where
the Character (‘C’ in CSR)
would matter the most. The
people working at ground level
would also be different from
people just cutting cheques ’,
he says.
Founder of the project “Be
Safe – Surakshit Rahiye”, with-
in a span of 2 years, Pavan
Kaushik has interacted with
more than 3500 employees,

accidents caused due to mobile
usages while driving, the
Hon’ble Rajasthan High Court

This is a landmark judgement

the production of a crop with
biotechnology not only flour-
ishes the crop in the country.
but also helps Poverty and star-
vation overcome. Nowadays
the area of fertile land is con-
tinuously decreasing in our
country and it is necessary that
through biotechnology we will
have to increase our crop pro-
duction. We must also keep in
mind that the impact of the her-
itage crops is affecting our
land. How can we compete with
m a n y c h e m i c a l s a n d
pathogens produced from such
crops? Emphasis on the need
for such research. Is need of
the hour Prof. Sharma added.
He revealed that with biotech-
nology, India stood the first
place in cotton production in
the world and 96 percent of
the total area of cotton is in
the BT cotton
Dr. Vishwa Ahuja, Chief
Managing Director, Biotech
Consortium India Limited, New
Delhi said in his note that
every country has created
biosafety system. India has
been a member o f the
Cartagena Protocol since
2003. Today, 171 countries of
the world are members of this
Protocol (Manual). Under the
Environment Protection Act of
1 9 8 6 , t h e Ge n e t i c
Environmental Approval
Committee (GEAC) is the
nodal agency to create rules
related to genetically modified
crops. The rule declared under
"Cartagena International
Protocol" is valid for sending
paragary crops from one coun-
try to another and all the coun-
tries follow it. This workshop
was informed about the devel-
oped kit for checking the truth
of Bt crops. Research is going
on in the areas of biotechnol-
ogy in India, rice, maize, mus-
tard, brinjal etc. The opinions
of farmers and officials about
biotechnology are different.

Ministry in relation to Biosafety
at the State and international
level is disseminated to the var-
ious institutions, farmers and
other related institutions and
knowledge generation are
done. Dr. Krishna said that
work is being done on the
investigation and verification
of protected organisms in 9
institutions of the country. With
this view, India's position is
quite strong. Knowledge-
based kits have been pre-
pared in 8 languages on
Biosafety by the Ministry,
through which the practical
knowledge of biotechnology
can be learned.
Dr. Abhay Kumar Mehta,
Research Director said that the
farmers in Rajasthan state are
familiar with BT cotton but BT
Bangan, Paragini Maize, fruits,
and vegetables are not famil-
iar with. Research on the first
and second level of Biosafety
was done on Paranaei maize

and Technology University.
But it is necessary to develop
complete knowledge about it
so that farmers can decide
about the goodness and bad-
ness of the technology itself
and adopt BT technology. He
said that compared to con-
ventional cotton from Bt cot-
ton, 30 percent increase in yield
and the number of insecti-
cides decreased by 40 percent.
He said that more than 250
biotechnology products are
currently available in the coun-
try, but before adopting biotech-
nology in the area of agricul-
ture, accurate study of socio-
economic aspects is neces-
