Since the last edition of our IN Maga-zine much has happened in the Worldand in the World of Porto Bay. Itsabout the Porto Bay Universe that Iwould like to bring you news.Firstly, and bearing in mind the need toconsolidate our presence in the largecountry of Brazil, we have acquired ahotel which is a reference point in the
city of So Paulo LHotel which, fromnow on, will be known as LHotel PortoBay So Paulo. This ve star boutiquehotel enjoys an excellent location in theheart of the city, the nancial centreof South America, and boasts reneddetails in its dcor and service on parwith the style of any European ve starhotel. This acquisition will bring furtherexposure to the Group in a market fullof potential such as Brazil.
2009 has been a very good year forPorto Bay Hotels & Resorts largely onaccount of the growing number of ourrepeat guests visiting our hotels. In fact,this year we have achieved an enviableresult in our Madeira hotels : over 30%.Despite having opened around one yearago, 15% of the clients at our Porto BayFalsia Hotel in the Algarve are alreadyrepeat guests. These gures are due tothe members of the Porto Bay PrestigeClub to whom we are very thankful.
This year, apart from the prizes award-ed by Tour Operators which bring usgreat recognition, we have receivedthree accolades that I would like to
mention here: the rst is the attributionof a Michelin star the rst in Madeira to the Il Gallo dOro restaurant at The Cliff Bay hotel. This ve star ho-tel in Madeira was also distinguishedby TripAdvisor, the largest auditor ofquality in tourist products in the world,which awarded it 19th place in the rank-ing of the best luxury hotels in the
world. TripAdvisor also classied Riode Janeiro as one of the 25 best Citiesin the World, awarding Porto Bay RioInternacional rst place amongst thehotels in this city. of experiences, the most important ofwhich rests on the natural diversity ofthe island itself. The climate is alwaysmild but the micro-climates on the is-land mean that there is truth in the say-ing that all four seasons can be experi-enced in a single day, sometimes withina stones throw of each other.Madeiras characteristic forest is alsoan example of diversity. Known as Lau-rissilva, this is a Jurassic forest datingfrom the time of the dinosaurs and sur-viving to this very day despite almost600 years of human settlement on theisland. NESCO acknowledged the im-portance of preserving the forest and
declared it a World Heritage Site.
When questioned as to what Madeirahas to offer, we quickly forget that thisis an island with an area of only 750 km2.
There are larger private properties in theworld but this is the main island belong-ing to a Portuguese Autonomous Regionwhich has the distinction of being one ofEuropes oldest tourist destinations.
The weight of these 200 years of tradi-tion can be felt pretty much in everycorner of the island. But this is also acontemporary island which has man-aged to synthesise the various epochsof its history. The result is a wealth

To this forest and climate man has broughtexotic plants from the four corners of theworld and created magnicent gardens ofEnglish inspiration under the inuence ofthe British families who came here to live asfrom the XVIIth century or who simply cameto holiday, especially in the XIXth century.Examples of this can be found at Quinta doPalheiro, the Funchal Botanical Garden or theMonte Palace Garden which, apart from ex-otic plants, also houses unique works of artfrom all over the world. All may be visited.
This framework provides the design of Fun-chal with a cosmopolitan touch. It was builtfacing the sea as a way of celebrating theadventures of the discoveries which broughtfame to Portugal. The Funchal Cathedral isproduct of this time and can be admiredin the centre of the city. The surround-ing streets, mostly closed to trafc, offera good opportunity for a stroll, especiallyalong Avenida Arriaga, one of the citysmost beautiful avenues.But in Madeiras main city (there are veother, smaller ones) other eras are repre-
sented in the monuments or architecturalensembles created by the buildings. The factthat the Funchal Port was always very busyon account of the islands strategic positionen route to the South Atlantic meant thatthere was a constant inux of foreigners,cultural references and inuences. Its beau-ty can be appreciated in the Colgio dosJesutas, Palcio de So Loureno or Con-vento de Santa Clara, amongst others.

cantos do Mundo, e magncos jardins, deinspirao inglesa, trazidos pelas inmerasfamlias britnicas que para aqui vieram vi-ver, desde o sculo XVII ou simplesmentepassar temporadas de frias, sobretudo nosculo XIX. Como exemplo temos os jar-dins da Quinta do Palheiro, ou o Jardim Bo-tnico do Funchal, ou ainda o Jardim MontePalace que, alm das plantas exticas reneobjetos de arte nicos, oriundos de todo oplaneta. Todos so abertos visitao.Este quadro de referncias torna sobretudo oFunchal uma cidade cosmopolita no desenho.
Foi construda a enfrentar o mar, comoforma de celebrar a aventura dos desco-brimentos que notabilizaram Portugal noMundo. A Catedral do Funchal um exem-plar desse tempo e pode ser admirada nocorao da cidade. As ruas circundantes, namaioria fechadas ao trnsito, so um bompercurso de passeio, sobretudo a AvenidaArriaga, uma das mais bonitas da cidade.Mas na principal cidade da Madeira (exis-tem outras cinco, menores), outras pocasesto representadas, nos monumentos ouno conjunto arquitetnico formado pelos
edifcios. O fato de o Porto do Funcha tersido sempre muito movimentado, devido posio estratgica da ilha nas viagens parao Atlntico Sul, trouxe sempre forasteiros,referncias culturais e inuncias.A beleza passa, entre outros, pelo Colgiodos Jesutas, o Palcio de So Loureno ouo Convento de Santa Clara.

resta Laurissilva visitar o Ribeiro Frio, umalocalidade encaixada num vale apertado.A partir daqui vale a pena ir aos Balces, umpequeno passeio a p, de cerca de 30 minu-tos, que serve de amostra s famosas levadasda Madeira. Essas levadas so normalmentepercursos mais longos, alguns chegam a du-rar o dia inteiro, mas os Balces funcionamcomo uma verso curta do tipo de paisagemque podemos encontrar, sem ter de percor-rer muitos das centenas de quilmetros destarede de canais de irrigao que foram vitaisno transporte de gua na Madeira.
A sua funo era captar a gua em altitudee sobretudo na Costa Norte e lev-la ao Sul,onde sempre se concentrou a maior parteda populao e os terrenos agrcolas. Hoje,grande parte das levadas serve para passeiosa p. O Caldeiro Verde ou a Levada do Nor-te so apenas exemplos.Na Costa Norte da ilha importante conhe-cer Santana. o lugar associado s tpicascasas madeirenses, cobertas de palha, mas tambm um lugar onde o verde da oresta mais exuberante. A prova est no ParqueFlorestal das Queimadas, que mais parece
um jardim, ideal para um piquenique ou paraum simples passeio.

brandy. Poncha has managed to reinvent itself and is one of the main drinksin the Madeira night scene.
The espetada is also well known. It consists of beef seasoned with salt, garlic and
laurel and roast on the spit. The secret lies in the seasoning but also in the heat of theembers. In terms of eating, we recommend trying bolo-do-caco, a very special kind ofbread, or milho frito (polenta cut into cubes and fried) or the famous black scabbard sh let

In the 1980s theMadeira Carnival imported samba andthe allegorical oats found in Brazil.On Saturday various troupes and sambaschools take to the streets to parade in
one of the main tourist events in Madei-ra. On Tuesday, another a more popularand satirical parade known as Trapal-ho is the main feature of the festival.
It may seem strange but it is true. Ma-deiras Carnival inuenced the biggestCarnival of the world : Rio de Janeiro.
The reason is historical: inspired by theEuropean burlesque tradition, Carni-val was already celebrated in Madeiraand it was taken to Brazil by the rstsettlers from the island along with theknow-how for sugar cane production.

ance in Lisbon in 2002. Today he con-siders himself fullled by the successalready attained by the Danando coma Difernca group but he still wantsmore, much more . .. IN went to inter-view him . ..
I was living in So Paulo and workingin the nancial markets dealing in cur-
rencies for a currency broker. At thesame time I took the Physical Educa-tion course, an area I liked a lot andabout which I was keen to know more.I loved the theory classes but I foundthe practical classes, in which we hadto work with young people with spe-
cial educational needs or from poorbackgrounds, uninspiring. I hated that
part. I kept my head above water withmy marks for theory and put no effortinto the practical part. And so it was forthree years until the assessment systemwas changed . .. then the practical partcarried more weight than the theory. Tonish the course I was obliged to do
a practical period at Casa Andr Lus,a shelter for the handicapped in So
Paulo with around 800 inmates.
