The Design for Business: Research Conference presents rigorous academic research examining the role of design in building competitive business advantage. We believe that design led innovation offers strategic advantage that can lead to improved productivity and increased economic prosperity whether it refers to the development of new business platforms, communication strategies, products or services.

There is a ground swell of research in this area, emanating from leading design and business research institutes and practitioners. In its fourth year, this research program is a world-class platform that brings together leading international researchers to share knowledge development in the area of design and design thinking for improved business outcomes.
The program is presented by agIdeas in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology and the State Government Victoria and with support from Auckland University of Technology and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. It is a landmark event during Design Matters: Melbourne International Design Week.
The Design for Business: Research Conference will present research studies and expert opinions that examine the role of design in building a competitive business advantage. This international conference serves as a platform for researchers, academics and professionals to present and discuss new research, ideas, trends or practices that occur at the cross-section of design and business. The conference is open to the public.
In the past years we were pleased to invite presentations from the research team at Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science whose clients include companies such as Coca-Cola, P&G, Turner Broadcasting, Unilever, General Motors, Kraft, Nielsen, and Leo Burnett. We exchanged ideas with the international interior design consultancy Geyer who works for clients such

as Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton, Melbourne Airport, ANZ, Deloitte, Fuji Xerox, and Vodafone. We discussed future business trends with a strategic foresight advisor from FutureBrand – a brand consultancy that works with clients such as Microsoft, American Airlines, and Nespresso. We examined issues on sustainability with Dr Robert Crocker – an Oxford-scholar and co-editor of a series of books published by Routledge, and we discussed issues of social responsibility with professionals such as Russell Kennedy, the former president of Icograda. We also held exclusive interviews with Dana Arnett - the CEO of the US-based design and branding consultancy VSA Partners, Quan Payne - the former Global Art Director for Nike for the London Olympics, and with Dr Dan Formosa - one of the founding partners of the cutting edge New York-based agency, Smart Design.

Dr Søren Petersen founded ingomar&ingomar - consulting in 1993 and has worked with many international organisations, including Rambøll Group, BMW Group DesignworksUSA, Stanford University, Copenhagen Business School, Fraunhofer and Hanyang University.
He received his PhD from Stanford University in Design Research, MS Mechanical Engineering from The Technical University of Denmark and his BS Transportation Design from Art Center College of Design. He has published 24 papers and 110 articles concerning the creative economy, as well as, authoring Profit from Design. His research areas are design strategy and developing methods and tools for bridging business and design using design quantification.

Dr Gjoko Muratovski is the Chairman of the Design for Business Research Conference. He has twenty years of multidisciplinary design experience that spans from Asia and Australia to Europe and the USA. Over the years he has worked with a range of businesses, organisations, universities and government institutions. Previously he served as an Advisor on Brand Development Strategies for the European-based agency IDEA+ Communications whose clients include leading brands such as Porsche, Audi, Volkswagen, the Heineken Group and McDonald’s. Currently he is the Head of the Communication Design department at the Auckland University of Technology; Area Chairman for Business at the PCA Australia and New Zealand; and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Design, Business and Society which is published by Intellect.

Ken Friedman is University Distinguished Professor and Distinguished Professor of Design at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. He is a Fellow of The Policy Lab of Boston, Massachusetts and Guest Professor at the Tongji University College of Design and Innovation. Friedman is Chief Investigator of Capacity Mapping for Integrative Design, a Flagship Collaborative Fund project for the Future Manufacturing Flagship of CSIRO, the Australian Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organization. Friedman formerly served as Dean of the Faculty of Design at Swinburne where he now leads the Research Group on Design Thinking and Complexity at the National Institute for Design Research.
