Bogart. He was known to murder the King’s English, but

no other director was able to capture the Americanscene better than the European-schooled genius whomade film history in America.

Of all the musicians our generation held in higheresteem than Steiner, one was Bernard Hermann. Hescored many of the great movies directed by AlfredHitchcock. His scary and stomach-churning score forPsycho is known as the most horrifying introductionto murder and mayhem in screen history.

When my generation attended a good movie, wewent away knowing a little bit more each time aboutthe making of movies than we could have learned ina college film class. We responded both individuallyand as a group to the communication made from thesilver screen, and we carried some of the best that it

gave to the audience throughout our own lives.Today, we are, very possibly, more capable of

evaluating the works of modern directors and screen-writers, not so much by comparisons, but through themovement of the inner powers and drives of a con-stant and ever-changing world where entertainmenthas become rather reckless, violent, colorless, andless creative.

The accessibility of multiple theatres and the con-stant changing taste of the public require a demandfor many movies per week.

Many of these movies are made rather quickly andhurried into the American malls for quick profits. Theyhave become the Wally World of gliding and pressingfor more, and more, and more, until, finally, the slash-ing, dabbing, flickering, and countless movie releaseshave lost their integrity and are easily forgotten.

Wow! —a reminder of howwarm March weather can beBY SHIRLEY POFF MCMAHAN

CRACKERS NECK NEWS

Wow, did you see hose tempera-tures over the past few days? I had for-gotten how warm it could get in themiddle of March. However, as I stopand think back a few years, I do recallgetting my worst sunburns in March.

In earlier years when we were aspry young couple, we were anxious tobe out and about when temperaturesbegan to leap into the higher numbers.Lot of those days were spent at a lakein Kingsport or at the steam plant inRogersville.Yes, you guessed it, myhusband returned home with his fish toshow for the hours in the sun and I wasthe one with the irritating blisters toshow for a week.

The frogs all returned to the localbranches last week and the annualflight of the geese passing throughcame in the middle of the week.

Speaking of warmer day, lawnmowing time is nigh at hand. It is justa matter of days until the Barker

Cemetery Committee will begin theirSummer schedule of improvementsand mowing. All donations toward thiswork are appreciated.

It was good to be in touch last weekwith Evelyn Roller Lester in Georgiaand her brother Bill Roller in Roanoke. Both are doing well and always enjoyhearing news from our area.

Remember the family of JimmyClark who passed away last week.Jimmy was a former employee of thetown of Big Stone Gap, a minister andpastor and a friend to many throughoutthe Southwest Virginia area.

Remember Dorothy Chester inprayer. Dorothy and her husbandCharley lived in Crackers Neck formany years as they raised their threesons.

Don and Jim Anderson are doingwell and are still enjoying the compa-ny of their fellow patients and visitorsat Heritage Hall.

On Monday morning, Donnie andKelly Sorah were guest on the fitnesssection of the Today Show. Kelly is a

teacher at Union High School andDonnie teaches at UVA Wise. Donnieis the son of Don and Wanda Sorah ofBig Stone Gap.

Congratulations to Donnie andKelly, they are an encouragement toothers.
