Welcome to St. Rose
Welcome to Historic St. Rose of Lima Church! As
you can see, St. Rose is a magnificent house of God.
It was built a century ago by the Irish Community of
Quincy at the price of many sacrifices. This church, a
historical landmark of the city of Quincy, is
considered as representative of the Venetian Gothic
style: a mix of Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine
styles. Before the church was reopened in the fall of
2008, 3 marble altars were installed as well as a
matching altar rail and pulpit. The altars were
consecrated by the Bishop of our diocese, Bishop
Thomas Paprocki on June 10, 2012.
One of the main fixtures of this church is the amazing
collection of stained glass windows (1912)
characteristic of the Munich Pictorial Style. We have
begun their restoration and the first phase of the work
was done in the fall of 2012. With your help, the
project should be completed by the end of 2014. If
you wish to be part of this project, contact the rectory.
A brochure explaining the project of restoration is
available.
As St. Rose Latin Mass Community is not a parish but
a chaplaincy, when you join it, you remain a member
of your local Catholic parish. To join, just give us a
call. After both Sunday Masses, the community meets
in the hall to socialize. Members and Visitors are
welcome! Coffee & Donuts are available.

From the Chaplain’s desk: 10th Sunday after Pentecost Charisms
In the epistle today, St. Paul enumerates 9 charisms.
Etymologically, the word "charism" comes from the Greek
charis, meaning grace, free gift. The word "grace" in current
theological language gives expression to the primordial gift that
allows Christians to participate in the divine life—in Christ. It is
what makes a baptized person a child of God and a member of
the Church.
The "spiritual gifts" termed charisms, which are gifts given for
the benefit of the common good, for the building of the Church.
The Spirit distributes them to many different people. They are
given to each and every one according to the needs of the
community. This does not mean that one should not remain open
or ask for these gifts according to one’s need or perception.
Given for the common good, charisms must be lived out in a
spirit of service (1 Pet 4:10-11). They are always received by an
individual according to his or her qualities, limits, tendencies, or
faults. Therefore they can be used well or poorly, can be
expressions of charity, or be an obstacle to it. Saint Paul
intervened on this matter in order to restore order to the
community at Corinth (cf. 1 Cor 14). Charisms can also be
refused or stifled. The Holy Spirit bestows His gifts on
unexpected people and places and in surprising ways. Thus does
He unceasingly sanctify, purify, and renew the Church, moving
her ever toward the accomplishment of the Body of Christ (cf.
Eph 1:9-10; Col 1:18-20).
The charism of prophecy is the most important gift after that of
Wisdom. It seems to stem from it, especially in an apostle. In the
Bible a prophet is God’s spokesman. He is inspired by the Holy
Spirit to proclaim God’s Word to men (cf 1 Pet 21). The Spirit
does not speak. That is the role of Jesus Christ, the Word of the
Father made flesh (Jn 15:15; Lk 24:19). The Spirit helps the
prophet to understand and transmit Christ’s Word to groups or
individuals. The Spirit of God enables the prophet to instruct,
exhort, admonish, or encourage them in any given situation (Jn
14:26; 15:13).
Every Christian must use the gift of discernment to avoid the
snares of the evil one (cf. Mt 7:16). Certain people have this gift
to a high degree, always to serve the good of the community,
which seems to prove that it comes from the Holy Spirit (cf. Cor
12:10). "Never try to suppress the Spirit," says St. Paul. "Think
before you do anything - hold on to what is good and avoid every
kind of evil" (1 Thess 5:19-22)
The gift of miracles: Jesus healed the sick and the infirm and
bestowed this power as a sign of his divine mission. Sending his
disciples to proclaim the Good News, he gave them the same
power (cf. Mt 10:19; Lk 10:9).

Weekly Feature: Evangelizing Catholics: The Bible,
Eucharist, and the New Evangelization – Dr. Scott Hahn In
this informative and dynamic presentation, Dr. Scott Hahn
discusses why the New Evangelization is the greatest priority of
the Church at this time, and how we are all called to share our
faith. He shows how the Eucharist relates to explaining Jesus’
death and resurrection, and how Blessed John Paul II’s call for a
New Evangelization must be based on the Eucharist.

August 9 - 11 K of C Barbeque : Birthright will once again have a
booth at the K of C Barbeque. Our bake sale has become extremely
popular & a wonderful support to Birthright so we are asking again
for each Catholic Church in Adams County to participate by
donating home-baked goods for the Bake Sale.
Nine churches have been divided into three teams to provide
baked items for each day of the three day event. Each parish is
asked to donate 10-15 baked items or batches of cookies, etc. These
can be brought to the K of C grounds during your assigned day. For
questions or to set up a pick up time please call Patty at 217-440-
8388. St. Rose is set for Friday, August 9 together with St. Anthony
and St. Peter. There is a sign-up sheet in the vestibule.
In conjunction with the Bake Sale, Birthright will hold a raffle
for a handmade “Quilt” and a “Dining Out” Package. Each person
who bakes for the bake sale will have their name entered into this
raffle with our grateful thanks for your generosity. If you bring your
baked item to the K of C grounds you can fill out your own raffle
ticket. If you have your items picked up please put your name,
parish and phone number secured to your baked item and we will
make sure that your name is entered.
Birthright operates an office at 12th and Broadway in the lower
level of the Zanger and Associates building. In a non-judgmental
atmosphere Birthright assists young girls and women who are
struggling with unexpected or unwanted pregnancies see their babies
