Welcome to St. Rose
Did you know that the Council Vatican II declared that
―The use of the Latin language, with due respect to
particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites‖? At
St. Rose, it is certainly the case. However, you may not
be used to Latin so it will take you some time to get
familiar with the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite.
We provide you with some brief indications below but
do not hesitate to ask for help. St. Rose Latin Mass
Chaplaincy is a Catholic community established by the
Bishop of Springfield in the fall of 2008.
On Sunday, you may follow Mass with a red booklet
(pews) and a Proper leaflet (vestibule). Hymnals are also
available for Sung Masses (vestibule). On Weekdays,
you need a daily Latin-English Missal to follow Mass.
They are available at Poppe’s (1886 Maine, Quincy).
You may also follow the ordinary with a red booklet.
There are collection or donation envelopes available in
pews and vestibule for visitors. If you wish to receive a
tax receipt or/and be kept informed on the life and
activities of our community at St. Rose, make sure you
give us your name and address. To join the chaplaincy,
call the church office.
On Sunday, please do come to the hall after Mass to
meet the community. Coffee & Donuts are available.

The Adventures of Tintin
Do you know who Tintin is? He is the most well known
personage of comic strips in the world and yet virtually
unknown in the U.S.A. His adventures have been printed in
more than 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of
his albums have been printed since its creation over 80 years
ago by Georges Rémi †1983, a Belgian Journalist, who wrote
them under the pseudonym of Hergé (pronunciation AIR-J:
which is how his initials R.G. sound in French).
This week, the first part of a movie trilogy, The Adventures of
Tintin, Part 1: The Secret of the Unicorn, is being played in
theaters throughout the U.S.A. It is a Steven Spielberg – Peter
Jackson 3D Animation Movie and it is rated PG. It has
already been out in the rest of the world for a few months and
has been an outstanding success grossing over $200 millions.
I have not seen the movie but I have read the 23 albums of
adventures while growing up and I recommend them highly to
parents for their children. Warning: they might enjoy them
more than their kids!
The drawings are simple and sober but magnificent; if there
are any details, they are indicative of the story; the plot is
impeccable. Every age group can benefit from them but
especially children. Our church library located in the
basement of the hall has a few copies that you may browse or
read or check out…
At this stage, you may have begun to think that I am losing
my mind… Why is Father talking about secular comic strips?
True, these comic strips are not particularly religious in
nature. However, they are good taste, clever, and informative,
as well as clean fun to read and instill a proper sense of what
is right and wrong. They do not involve monsters or people
with extraordinary powers but ordinary people, good or bad,
true to life. The character defects of the main personages are
dealt with humor and are rich in moral lessons.
Tintin is pure of heart : he has no jealousy, nor envy, nor
impure desire. Once a while, he experiences anger out of
rightful indignation as Jesus (Expelling of the Temple’s
merchants). We do not know anything about Tintin’s family
like Melchisedech in Genesis, he has neither father, nor
mother. However, Hergé provides eventually a substitute
father, Captain Haddock. Haddock has a choleric temper.
When he meets Tintin for the first time he is alcoholic and
violent but eventually, thanks to Tintin’s influence, he
experiences a true redemption, not without difficulties and
lapses, and become also pure of heart…

obligation. No Sunday school. Collection Counters: Leo

Attention Parents of toddlers and infants: Out of charity for
other church goers, do not wait to step out of church when
your child is crying or being disruptive. You may be used to
the noise but others might not especially older folks.
Sometimes people mention they would like to attend St. Rose
but find the background noise distracting.
Christmas Memorial Poinsettias: Do you have a loved one
you would like remembered with flowers at Christmas? Please
use the envelopes in the vestibule, filling in all blanks, and
putting your donation inside. These can be placed in the
Sunday collection basket or taken to the rectory.
Have you noticed the beautiful quilt of St. Rose window in
the hall? It was made and donated by Alaine Baugher. It will
be the object of a special raffle. All monies will go to the
restoration project of our stained glass windows. Chances are
available. Tickets are $1 a piece or 6 for $5 and are available
at the rectory during Business hours. The drawing will take
place on June 2nd 2012, on the anniversary date of the
Dedication of the Church.
Centennial Items: Are you looking for a Christmas gift?
Our cookbook can make a wonderful gift. ($15) It may be
purchased either at the rectory during business hours or at the
Zanger Real Estate Office on Broadway & 12 St. Also
available are trivets and aprons with a picture of the church
for $10 each. St. Rose Church tapestry (afghan: 50 x 60 inch,
$45) is no longer available.
St. Rose Christmas Cards representing our Nativity window
are also available on the rack in the vestibule for $2 a piece or
in a packet of 20 cards for $12 (10 Nativity & 10 Angels
windows).
Mystic Monk Coffee Drive: Consider purchasing what is
considered some of the finest gourmet coffee available. See
the Mystic Monk Coffee poster and sign-up forms located in
the vestibule for more information. It will not only help the
traditional Carmelite Monks in Wyoming who make it but the
Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter as well. Save your used Coffee
ground and add it to Church Compost next to the Garage!
St. Rose History Tidbit #32: While the first church was
being built, the congregation opened their homes to their
pastor. It was common practice then, that when a church is
not available, for a priest to offer the Holy Sacrifice in private
or public buildings. Fr. Brennan offered Holy Mass in many
parish homes although the congregation still attended St. Peter
or St. John. The first such Mass in St. Rose parish is believed
to have been in the Settles’ family home at 815 Chestnut.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR:
Sunday, December 18. Meeting in Church after both
Masses. As you know, our stained glass windows are in need
of work and we plan to begin the restoration process
sometimes after the completion of our Centennial Year in
June 2012. We need to raise a considerable amount of money
to achieve this goal. Our fundraisers (dinners, sales, card
parties, cookbook, other items, etc...) have been useful. We
will update you on how much has been raised so far. Also a
few families have already agreed to sponsor the restoration of
a particular window. Consider being part of this historic
church by making a commitment in sponsoring a window you
like if you have not done so. We will explain to you the
various ways it can be done and which windows still need a
sponsor. We will explain what the restoration process entails.
Friday, January 6 & Saturday 7 Night Vigil 8:00pm -
