Time to invest
Pharmaceutical and biotechnological products are becoming even better and more effective thanks to modern production processes, but they are also becoming more sensitive. For such products, the packaging therefore plays an increasingly critical role, and a reliable and practical vapor barrier is more important than ever. “The previous moisture management for coldform foil with desiccant pellets, desiccant bags or desiccant tablets has significant disadvantages,” says Wilhelm Zuser. “Not only are they expensive, they open up the dangerous possibility that the patient will confuse the desiccant with the medication.” Another disadvantage lies in the additional handling required in the packaging lines. “This desiccant must be introduced in a separate process, and space
must be created for it. This is often a serious disadvantage in connection with label solutions as well. It is necessary to invest in application processes.”
This is why, according to coldform
foil product manager Wilhelm Zuser,
Constantia Flexibles has worked very
hard on an alternative coldform foil that
offers additional protection for each
individual tablet. These efforts have
now met with success. The Constantia
DryFoil provides active vapor
management to ensure both greater
effectiveness and safe consumption.
It also has a feature very important to
the packing company: DryFoil requires
no significant change to the previous
packing process.
Thanks to the high absorptive capacity
of the desiccant used, all moisture
entering into the blister via cross-
diffusion at the cut edges is safely
absorbed. Conditions within the
pocket remain consistently dry over an
extremely long period of time. The result
is a longer shelf life for sensitive active
ingredients. To a certain extent, DryFoil
can also absorb residual moisture from
the packaged products themselves.
Wilhelm Zuser also emphasizes that the
production of Constantia DryFoil makes
no use at all of PVC, that the foil is also
compatible with many polyethylene-
based lid foils and that it can be easily
integrated into existing production
systems.
The New Year had hardly begun and the suitcases had to be packed again as there were already two important fairs on the schedule. Pharmapack Paris 2014 was an impressive event based on the numbers alone: Over 3,000 visitors and 330 exhibitors from over 70 countries met in the new exhibition halls to inform or learn about innovations and trends in packaging and delivery systems. Our summary: We will definitely be attending the next Pharmapack!
The long trip to Interphex 2014 was also
very worthwhile. On one hand, this is
because Interphex is the leading annual
pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical
manufacturing trade fair in the USA. On

the other hand it also offers a uniquely
comprehensive glimpse at our industry.
The large hands-on showroom, the
interactive demonstrations, the breadth
of focus ranging from consumables
to contact manufacturing and the
size with over 600 exhibitors made
it an extremely diverse trade fair
that was also highly conductive to
intercompany or client/supplier
networking.
We certainly don’t have to go into too
much detail here concerning Interpack.
We naturally expect to see many familiar
faces at this highlight among trade fairs,
but we also know that we will make
some interesting new contacts at our
new stand as well.
It is true that we were optimistic,
but to be entirely honest, we did
not expect such success: The first
edition of Pharma Impressions took
us from zero to 500 subscribers.
We are very pleased by this and
all the more motivated to work
hard on the coming editions – we
promise! At the moment, however,
we are not only active in the
area of communication and the
introduction of new products, such
as the launch of DryFoil. We are also
working on optimizing our internal
organization. Our goal naturally
remains the same: As one of the
world’s leading manufacturers
of flexible packaging, we want to
remain a reliable and innovative
partner committed to close
collaboration and the sharing of
expertise.
We are still particularly engaged
in growth in the markets of South
America, Asia, the Middle East
and India. Accordingly, this edition
also contains an article detailing
our assessment of the Indian
packaging market.
In the hopes that you enjoy this
edition as much as the previous
one, I offer you a warm welcome
and look forward to receiving your
feedback on this edition of Pharma
Impressions as well.

OUR EMPLOYEES – YOUR CONTACTS
In summer – more precisely on June 16 and 17, 2014 – the Pharma segment of Constantia Flexibles will be hosting the Constantia Flexibles Customer Academy in Spain/Barcelona. Many interesting representatives from diverse areas of the pharmaceutical industry will gather here for intense and fascinating discussions: from Purchasing to Production and from Quality Control to Marketing.
Naturally, the products of Constantia
Flexibles, their features and potential
applications will receive all due
attention. We will also be discussing
new technical capabilities and trends
in the packaging industry. The shared
dinner on the evening of June 16 will be
a definite high point of the Constantia
Customer Academy. In addition to
enjoying delicious food, this will also be
an opportunity for making new contacts,
sharing experiences and expertise
between all participants and learning
about new ideas and perspectives. The
second day will be filled with workshops
covering extremely interesting topics
in which the employees of Constantia
Flexibles will focus on product
updates, innovative developments and
market trends and discuss with the
participants new market opportunities
and prospects.
By the way: Anyone who can’t attend
this time should not be too depressed
since the Pharma segment of
Constantia Flexibles will be organizing
the Constantia Flexibles Customer
Academy as a regular event in the future.
India’s pharmaceutical market is booming and it will continue. This simple and clear statement serves as a summary of a large study by McKinsey & Company. The convincing basis for this summary is a look by this company at the development of the health sector over the past ten years, during which time this sector has tripled in volume from 23 to almost 70 billion US dollars.
Even this increase pales in comparison
to the expectations forecast by
McKinsey & Company for the
year 2020: in this year alone, the
pharmaceutical market should be almost
45 billion US dollars! This would make
the Indian market the sixth-largest in
the world. According to the analysts,
the reason for this rapid growth lies in
India’s strong economic growth, which
enables better and more widespread
health care for the population. India is
therefore in the process of becoming
one of the largest new markets in the
pharmaceutical industry. How massively
pharmaceutical production in India has
grown can also be seen in the fact that
the most production sites certified by the
US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
outside of the USA can be found here.
Against the background of several tests
with negative results, the manufacturers
in India should in future be inspected
according to the same guidelines as
companies in the USA. This is hardly
surprising when one considers that
roughly 40 percent of the generic and
over-the-counter products sold in the
USA come from India. However, so much
success motivates imitators to copy the
products in lower quality and dangerous
forms. Constantia Flexibles is also
strengthening its activity on the Indian
market with the capability to support
the pharmaceutical industry in the fight
against counterfeits with high-quality and
counterfeit-resistant packaging solutions.
Companies all over the world rely on products of Constantia Flexibles. This is due not only to the high quality of the products but also to our regional sales managers, who act as proficient and reliable contact persons. We introduce them here with photo and email address:

We have already presented the portrait
of Mr. Javier Larrubia, Deputy Senior
VP Sales Pharma and Regional Sales
Manager Iberia & LATAM in the last
edition of our newsletter.
Since one year now, Constantia Flexibles has held a 60% stake in Parikh Packaging in the western part of India. The corresponding contract was signed last April, and we have intentions to make further inroads into the Indian subcontinent.
“With this acquisition, we want to
take part in a very attractive and
growing market that is supported by
a growing middle layer with increasing
demand for packaged food and health
care products,” said Thomas Unger,
CEO of Constantia Flexibles on the
occasion of the contract signing in
April. The Indian site with roughly
500 employees is primarily a supplier
to the food, health, body care and
non-food industries. The success of
Parikh Packaging is also based on a
commitment to offering a one-stop
shop for all printing and packaging
solutions and on infrastructure and
technology of the very highest quality.
For this reason, the machinery of the
plant covers a very wide range of
packaging production. The systems
have also been planned and installed
such that each production line is
located in a clean, separate room
to avoid cross-contamination. Air
showers, powerful air filters and
strictly regulated work processes
additionally ensure a consistently
clean production environment.
Accordingly, the laminates of Parikh
Packaging are certified according
to ISO 9001:2008, BRC-IOP
standards, ISO 14001:2004
and OHSAS 18001:2007. Major
additional investments should also
be carried out this year. The goal
is to further expand the production
capacities and enlarge the production
area in order to win additional
customers for Parikh Packaging. A
capacity expansion of roughly 400
tons is planned, and in a continuously
growing market, it should not be hard
to find corresponding customers.
