R&B singer Paula DeAnda’s single “Walk Away” can beheard on Top 40 radio across the country, a distinction thatmade her the headlining act at the 106.7 KISS-FM Sum-mer Jam in Rochester on Thursday, May 24. Also onthe bill: rapper Baby Boy Da Prince, girl group Tif-fany Affair, and reggaeton artist Kat DeLuna.
However, less than two years ago, the 17-year-oldwas roaming the talent-show circuit in her home-town of Corpus Christi, Texas.
While covering a Michelle Branch song dur-ing one of those talent shows, she caught theear of Ed Ocanas, program director forCorpus Christi radio station KZFM, andthe two immediately began craftingsongs together.
In March 2006, DeAndaauditioned for music mogulClive Davis and was signed toArista Records.
Her self-titled debut album has soldjust over 200,000 copies since itsAugust 2006 release, and thesingle “Walk Away” peaked at No.18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Recently, DeAnda talked withinsider about writing music,school and being compared toMariah Carey:
What’s your schedule like now?It is pretty hectic. I basically take
things day by day if I can, when Ican. I love everything I’ve done so
far. Every day we do different shows. People know more aboutme and are singing more of my songs. It’s a good feeling.
What do you miss most about being a normal teenager?I miss the dances at school. I miss out on a lot ofthose things and being with my friends as much as I
used to be.
I read that you co-wrote seven songs onyour album.
It was really good, being that it wasmy first album, that I could writesongs of my own and be very artisticand a part of it. Everybody that Iworked with has helped me out a
lot. Throughout this wholeordeal I have a journal
that I carry around.I’m progressingas an artist,and I feel likeyou get a lot
more respect ifyou write your own
songs.

What do you think aboutthat?
That’s hard shoes to fill. Igrew up listening to a lot ofher music. I would cleanmy room to her songs. I
would try to do all the octavesthat she could do. It’s an honor tobe compared to her. ◆
