www.rochesterinsider.com MAY 18, 2007 INSIDER R&B singer Paula DeAnda’s single “Walk Away” can be heard on Top 40 radio across the country, a distinction that made her the headlining act at the 106.7 KISS-FM Sum- mer Jam in Rochester on Thursday, May 24. Also on the bill: rapper Baby Boy Da Prince, girl group Tif- fany Affair, and reggaeton artist Kat DeLuna. However, less than two years ago, the 17-year-old was roaming the talent-show circuit in her home- town of Corpus Christi, Texas. While covering a Michelle Branch song dur- ing one of those talent shows, she caught the ear of Ed Ocanas, program director for Corpus Christi radio station KZFM, and the two immediately began crafting songs together. In March 2006, DeAnda auditioned for music mogul Clive Davis and was signed to Arista Records. Her self-titled debut album has sold just over 200,000 copies since its August 2006 release, and the single “Walk Away” peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Recently, DeAnda talked with insider about writing music, school and being compared to Mariah Carey: What’s your schedule like now? It is pretty hectic. I basically take things day by day if I can, when I can. I love everything I’ve done so far. Every day we do different shows. People know more about me and are singing more of my songs. It’s a good feeling. What do you miss most about being a normal teenager? I miss the dances at school. I miss out on a lot of those things and being with my friends as much as I used to be. I read that you co-wrote seven songs on your album. It was really good, being that it was my first album, that I could write songs of my own and be very artistic and a part of it. Everybody that I worked with has helped me out a lot. Throughout this whole ordeal I have a journal that I carry around. I’m progressing as an artist, and I feel like you get a lot more respect if you write your own songs. An article you were featured in called you “The new Mariah.” What do you think about that? That’s hard shoes to fill. I grew up listening to a lot of her music. I would clean my room to her songs. I would try to do all the octaves that she could do. It’s an honor to be compared to her.
