“Save Chat Moss”
Chat Moss is a large area of peat bog, thoughtto be 7,000 years old, and makes up 30% of theCity of Salford. Peat started to develop here withthe ending of the last ice age, c.10,000 years ago.
HISTORY OF PEAT EXTRACTIONPeat extraction at Chat moss goes back severalhundred years. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, extraction was by sod cutting at arelatively low level, primarily for burning as fuel.It is only since the 1950s that peat has been extracted for horticultural purposes through aseries of planning permissions which vastly accelerated the rate at which peat was removed.
PEAT EXTRACTION TODAYPlanning permissions for peat extraction atChat Moss expired Dec 2010, but there are stillsubstantial amounts of peat on the site, andnew applications were submitted Aug 2010 forboth the Salford CC and the Wigan side.
The new proposal was to continue extractingpeat following the expiry of the current permission in Dec 2010, and to delay the currentrequirement to restore the site to active“sphagnum” mossland, for another 15 years. In this time, the developers William Sinclairs, would remove another 2 metres of peat - notonly delaying restoration but also making effective restoration more difficult.
As 99% of lowland raised bogs in the North Westhave been either severely damaged or destroyedcompletely, it is not surprising that the LancashireWildlife Trust leapt into action to save Chat Moss. The “Save Chat Moss” Campaign resulted inover 600 objections to the proposals being received by Salford CC. It was highlighted inlocal media coverage and the overwhelmingreaction was one of outright opposition.
UNLAWFUL PEAT EXTRACTIONOn Good Friday 2011, to the anger of the localcommunity, William Sinclair recommenced theirpeat extraction operation despite having novalid planning permission.
Salford CC served them with a 28 day TemporaryStop Notice, and in June 2011 Salford PlanningCommittee unanimously rejected the applicationon grounds which included the impact on alocal Site of Biological Interest, local policies, and the impact on climate change. It is believedthat this is the first time a local authority hasused climate change as a reason for refusingan application of this sort, which makes this alandmark ruling, but one which is highly likelyto be challenged through the appeal process. Finally, Salford took High Court action to ensureno further extraction took place on their side ofthe boundary.
Sadly, this action did not halt the extraction ofpeat on Chat Moss. William Sinclairs simplymoved their operations to the Wigan side ofthe boundary and carried on extracting peatthroughout Summer 2011. Wigan Council finallyrefused the applications on their side of theboundary in August 2011, but at the time ofwriting have still not taken enforcement actionagainst the company.
THE GOOD NEWS!Lancashire Wildlife Trust submitted a bid on30th August for £1.7m to the Heritage LotteryFund. Together with other funding, this willallow the Trust to buy Little Woolden Moss, restore it to lowland raised bog and open it upfor access and learning opportunities for thelocal community.

Tried and Tested: MicrodermabrasionMy skin was in terrible condion and crying out forhelp, so I was keen to try it out. I was one of Dawn’sfirst clients at her new clinic in Roe Green. The treatmentlasted about half an hour and was surprisingly relaxing.
Dawn discusses your skin condion and explains exactlyhow the treatment works. Before the Microdermabrasion, your face is gently cleansed. Then a machine is usedto blast ny crystals onto your skin and vacuums itup. This exfoliates and removes the top layers of deadcells, increasing blood circulaon and encouragingskin cell renewal. It didn’t hurt - there was a slightckly feeling, and was a lile bit more prickly on thesides of my cheeks, but that was all. The skin is thentoned, moisturised and SPF loon is applied to protect the exposed layer from the sun.
The Verdict: My skin felt immediately cleaner andfresher, and did look smoother just aer a taster session.
Ideally, you have a course of 8 treatments and the intensity/roune changes as you progress. I have sentmy husband on a full course in the hope of making himlook 10 years younger! He finds it really relaxing andthere is a definite improvement just aer 2 sessions.

Worsley: Its Origins and Descendants...A Tale of Knights, Nobility and RoyaltyMark Worsley, a likely descendent of the original Worsley family shareshis knowledge of the origins of Worsley, before the arrival of the famousDuke of Bridgewater.
The Worsley we livein today is a totallydifferent place towhat it would havebeen until a coupleof hundred years ago, when its landscapechanged dramaticallywith the building of
the Bridgewater canal and the developmentof the mines in the Victorian era. Until thattime it had remained for many centuries anessentially rural farming area, lying far awayfrom the town of Manchester.
It seems that in Roman times, the area wenow call Worsley consisted of large forests, marshes and moorlands, being very wildand rugged. The Romans built several roadsthrough the area, including the mainManchester to Wigan road, which ran nearWorsley Old Hall. Later the Anglo-Saxonsbuilt a settlement here. Saxon settlementswith names ending in Legh or Ley, meant ameadow or forest clearing and in its oldEnglish form, the old name for what wenow call Worsley meant "the cleared placethat was cultivated or settled".
After 1066 the area was governed byNorman Lords of the Manor. The ancientmanor of Worsley covered an area far largerthan the present district and includedSwinton, Pendlebury and Little Hulton.
The first Norman Lord of the Manor that weknow of was Sir Elias de Worsley (born 1150)and this land was given to him by the King.Elias fought in the Crusades and was partof the army of knights that fought in theHoly Land.
Later descendants included Sir Richard deWorsley and Johannes de Worsley, whowere both Knights of the Order of St John. The Order established a hospital in Jerusalemto care for sick pilgrims and is where theSt John Ambulance originates from.
These original Worsley Lords, who areprobably my distant great grandfathers, would have lived in the largest house in thearea, the Manor House, which it is thoughtmay have been on the site of what is nowWorsley Old Hall. The villagers leased landfrom the Lord and as his tenants they wereexpected to work on his land two or threedays a week and additional days in busytimes for ploughing or harvesting.
The people of Worsley would have lived inlittle two roomed cottages made of wattleand daub, with thatched roofs. The Lordowned a water mill, probably near Mill Browand the people had to pay the Lord to grindtheir corn there and bake bread in his oven. The Worsley family continued to govern thearea until 1385 when the Masseys of Tattonbecame the owners.
Later descendants of the family includeSir Charles Worsley,a Governor Generalunder Oliver Cromwelland the first Memberof Parliament forManchester and inthe present day,Katharine Worsley, who married intothe Royal Family andis the currentDuchess of Kent.

Solar PV Panels and the Feed In Tariff Scheme...A solution to energy price rises? What is the “Feed In Tariff “ Scheme? The Feed In Tariff (FITs) scheme, introducedin April 2010, replaces Government grantfunding for electricity generating products.
Under the FIT Scheme, energy companiesmust pay anyone generating their own electricity from renewable or low carbonsources such as Solar PV panels for everyKilowatt produced, plus a small amount forany surplus energy that is fed back into thenational grid.
What Is Solar PV?Solar PV or photovoltaic systems convertlight from the sun into electricity that can be used in your home, and any excess soldback to the grid.
The benefits of installing Solar PV Panels FITs payments are guaranteed for 25 years
(currently 43.3p per unit) and indexed linked to inflation
Payments are tax free Save on your electricity bills by using your
own electricity. Surplus units can be sold back to grid
(currently at 3.1p per unit) Provide 8-10% return on your investment. Reduce carbon footprint
If you are considering Solar PV and want tomaximise the returns, then look into it nowas the FIT rates will reduce in April 2012. FITs are locked in at the rate you start withfor the duration of your tariff.
Example:-An average 2.2 kwp system in the North Westwould generate per annum:
Electricity Generated: 1,833 kwhGeneraon Tariff Income @ 43.3p: £794Export Tariff Income @ 3.1p: £28*Electricity Bill Savings @13p: £119Total Income + Savings: £941Return On Investment: 10%
*50% sold back to the grid

You are probably used tobeing exhorted to do 30minutes of gentle exercisea day to reduce your riskof heart disease, diabetes, stroke etc, but do you knowthat exercise can help toslow the ageing process, and even reverse it?
‘We don’t stop exercising because wegrow old, we grow old because westop exercising’ – Dr Kenneth Cooper
Muscle deteriorationFrom the age of around 35, we start to losemuscle. At first, it’s no big deal, but the olderwe get the more serious the loss becomes.Muscles are essential for movement andposture and this muscle loss is the main reason for loss of independence as we growold, when we become too weak to get out of a chair unaided and even wash or dress ourselves. Muscle loss is also related to theonset of many bone diseases. The musclethat holds our spine in alignment can deteriorate as we age and cause major backproblems. The same is true for the muscleand tendons around the knee and hip joints.Plus muscle is an active tissue that burnscalories at rest, meaning the amount youcan eat without putting on weight will alsodecrease with age.
Regain lost muscleThe good news is that regular resistance(or strength) training can halt and reverse muscle loss and it’s never too late to start;research shows that the older we are, themore relative benefits we can get. Resistancetraining can be provided in all sorts of ways;
by moving our own body weight e.g. walkingup stairs and getting up from a chair, by lifting, pushing and pulling weights e.g. freeweights, or just doing household chores andgardening! We can also use water such asaquarobics, resistance bands, hydraulic gymequipment and pilates. These have the addedbenefit of being very gentle on the joints.
Try to include some flexibility exercise likestretching or yoga, as this helps to keep ourmuscles and tendons supple and our jointsmobile.
Building up your exercise regimeIf you haven’t exercised for some time, start slowly with short walks 3-4 times a weekand build up steadily. Then add resistanceand flexibility work; there are some greatbooks and websites out there that will guideyou. Alternatively, book a session with a gyminstructor and ask him or her to demonstratea suitable programme. Remember though,to check with your GP before starting anynew exercise programme.

Low Back Pain...Understand and Advanceby Jonathan Gaul, Swinton Physiotherapy
Low back pain is a big issue because of itsprevalence, affecting most people at somestage in their lives, and also because of theeffect that it has on days lost from work.Terms like ‘spondylitis’, ‘trapped nerve’ and‘slipped disc’ are common jargon but unlessyou have a true idea of the nature of theproblem you could be doing yourself moreharm than good.
There are two main sources of pain at the lowback; tissue that is subject to stretch e.g. discs, ligaments, muscles; and tissue that is subjectto compression e.g. bone and cartilage.
Pain can fall into either category according toour age and lifestyle. The younger and moreactive individual will tend to suffer from stretch
and strain stimulus, whereas an older or moresedentary person will suffer from compressionstimulus as there is less risk of strain, butgreater potential for wear and tear.
Either situation requires different approachesto treatment. These days access is available toa wealth of information about back pain andexercises to treat yourself, but if that advice isnot specific to the condition then it can prolong symptoms.
Hence the importance of getting a thoroughexamination from a physiotherapist in orderto allow a full appreciation of the cause ofyour pain, and a tailored rehabilitation planto get you pain-free and functioning.
Are You Tolerang Back Pain? You don't have to. Back pain oen responds quickly toquality hands-on treatment. Sleep comfortably, workcomfortably and get the spring back in your step.

Small Business AdviceLocal Tax and Accountancy Specialist, Chris Jones,
provides advice for small businesses
I’ve just started my own business having been made redundant from my last job.I’ve registered with HMRC as self-employed, but could you tell me what myobligaons are with regards to record-keeping for HMRC?
Under current legislaon, business owners must retain their records for 6 years.Payroll records, CIS records and personal tax return informaon may be retained forless. HMRC provide no rules regarding the format of the records, but as a minimumthey should include all sales and purchase invoices.
Ulmately, the most important factor is that you keep accurate, mely records. Sothese could be anything from manual cashbooks, to computerised spreadsheets, to asophiscated computerised bookkeeping package.
Penales will apply if HMRC ever enquired into your affairs and found no evidence toback up the figures in your income tax or VAT returns. HMRC are also clamping downon poor records, and can impose fines in severe cases where the records are felt to beinadequate and inaccurate.
