Boothstown Village Hall
Thanks to a localindependentcommittee, theold St Andrew’sschool buildingin Boothstown
has recently re-opened as the Village Hall, a community run facility.
The building has for many years been managedby the St. Andrews C.E. School and used byboth the school and community groups.
However, since the school opened its newextension, the buildings were no longerrequired and faced an uncertain future as theChurch was not in a position to keep it open, thus leaving many groups without a venue, and very few alternatives in the local area.
A Real Community Project that Needs Your Help!So a committee comprising residents, usergroup representatives and local councillorshas taken on the mammoth task of runningthe premises on Vicars Hall Lane.
Upon take-over, the committee was given anestimate of £120k to bring the hall up todate and carry out necessary repairs. Theboiler was broken, double glazing needed, roof repairs required and damp rectifying!
The hall has been used for many years bythe Scouts/Cubs, Guides/Brownies, Playgroup,After School Club, Badminton and Karategroups. It is also now home to the Ellenbrook & Boothstown Brass Band.
The Committee needs your help to keep the facility open. You can help in many ways:-• Become a “Friend” of the hall for a small
annual subscription of £5• Make a donation / hold fundraising events• Use the hall - hire it for parties, meetings,
groups, clubs etc.....• Volunteer your time and skills (plumber,
electrician, joiner, builder, painter etc..)
The committee is currently applying forgrants from various organisations and intends to widen this search for funding.
If you can help, or would like to get involved:-Email: [email protected]: 07982 231062Visit: www.boothstownvillagehall.org.uk

Room for a little one ?Calling all animal lovers...This time ofyear is arguably theworst for ourline of work
because the festivitiesand the post-Christmas lean finances meanthat very few animals are adopted over thecold winter months. This unfortunately impacts on our service to the RSPCA inspectorate who rely on us to help take inthe animals they rescue.
Few people know that there are 170 RSPCAbranches in England and Wales as well as anational RSPCA charity (who fund the
inspectorate and animal hospitals). Eachbranch is an independent charity that is self-funding, which means every branch isunique in terms of its wealth and range ofservices it can offer.
Here at the Manchester and Salford Branchwe channel our £250k annual income intoexclusively helping as many animals as possible that the RSPCA inspectors rescue from cruelty, neglect and abandonment.
We do not have our own animal shelter, instead we use 3 different private boardingestablishments to house cats, dogs and rabbits, and we have a network of wonderfulvolunteer animal foster carers too.
Each year we help over 300 animals, notmuch less than some of neighbouringbranches with shelters. We pride ourselveson the work that we do and so whilst thelow points are plentiful, the highs are inabundance each and every time we rehomean animal.
You can follow the work that we do on ourFacebook, Twitter and Blog - hold on to yourseats, it's a rollercoaster ride!

Get Outside and Beat the Winter Blues!
It may be against your better judgement, but now really is a good timeto take up outdoor exercise to beat the winter blues. Here’s why:-
Being closer to nature gives us a psychological boost – with greenery, water and mountains especially cheering. When added to the naturalmood enhancement we get from exercise, and the self-satisfaction we get from doing something that takes more self-motivation, then the winter blues don’t stand a chance! Exercising in daylight will increase your production of Vitamin D, whichwould otherwise suffer during the winter months and you’ll lessen yourchances of suffering from seasonal affective disorder. You’ll boost your immune system while reducing your exposure to coldand flu bugs which proliferate indoors in the winter. As the body has to work harder to maintain a safe core temperature, youwill burn more calories by exercising in the cold – by around 12%!Winter may bring the chance to try new exercise options - tobogganing, snowboarding, ice-skating – to add variety and fun to your schedule.
Options for outdoor exercising include winter walks, hiking, running, cycling or horse-riding. Try running along the beach, or taking a brisk walkin the woods. No need to push yourself hard, instead, take the time to notice your environment and the changes that are going on around you.
Outdoor exercise does have its risks though, so it’s important to take a few precautions to stay safe:-
Talk to your doctor if you have any health issues that could be aggravated by winter conditions and follow his/her advice.Wear the right clothes. Dress in layers so that you can take them off asyou warm up and put them back on once you stop. Wear a hat and gloves to reduce heat loss from your extremities. Choose the proper footwear. Invest in a good pair of outdoor winter socks, sock liners and waterproof shoes. Footwear should also provide good traction to prevent slipping. Don’t forget sunscreen if you’re going to be out for any length of time. If it’s a sunny day, take your sunglasses too. If you’re exercising in the dark, then wear reflective clothing, and if youare on your own, take a mobile phone just in case you have a fall. Drink plenty of fluids; you’re just as likely to become dehydrated in thecold as in the heat from sweating
Embrace the season and have a happy winter!

Winters WalksMonton & Roe Green Loopline Heritage Trail
It may not feel like the ideal time of year to goout walking, but if you wrap up warm you'llsoon find out that winter walks can be fantasticand invigorating.
Here’s a suggestion for a Sunday afternoon, orpost-Christmas dinner walk!
The Monton and Roe Green Loopline HeritageTrail is a circular walk which begins and ends inMonton village and follows the 'loopline', theold route of the Roe Green railway line, beforereturning along the towpath of the BridgewaterCanal.
The walk is 2 miles and should take about 1hour to complete. It is accessible for wheelchairusers, but in wet weather the path alongsidethe canal can become very muddy.
The walk begins at Monton Green - the heartof Monton’s conservation area, which also incorporates the Unitarian Church; a lodgebuilt in 1875 to the Earl of Ellesmere's formerestate; and a club house with bowling green.
Monton Green was part of the Earl of Ellesmere’sestate, but in November 1895 he made it anopen space for public use.
The walk takes you through the site of the oldMonton Green Station, which operated for over80 years before closing in 1969, and then continues along the Roe Green Loopline to the remains of Old Worsley Station. You arethen brought out onto Worsley Road, directedthrough to Worsley Green and then proceedalong the famous Bridgewater Canal back towards Monton.
On your return to Monton, look out for the famous lighthouse - the 36 foot high landmarkbuilt by local resident with an eye for the unusual!
If, during or after, your walk, you fancy somerefreshments, there are several cafes and pubsin Monton and Worsley.

i-Lipo™ is the latest in laser lipolysis, offering you a way to achieve inch lossand body contouring with no pain, no needles and no down time.
How does it work?
The i-lipo uses a low level of visible red laser light to stimulate the body'snatural processes that empty the stored fat contents inside fat cells.
The laser energy creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, temporarilyopening pores in the cell wall through which the fat contents can escape. The contents are then transported around the body to the tissues that willuse them during metabolism to create energy. Thus i-Lipo is not creatingany unnatural reaction in the body nor does it affect or damage any surrounding structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves. This metabolism of the contents permanently removes them from the bodyleaving smaller fat cells and giving you inch loss.
i-Lipo : The intelligent alternative to liposuction
i-lipo works on thighs, buttocks, stomach, calves, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips, chin, man breasts and baby bulge. Equally effective on both men and women.
What Svelte Body clients say....Ann from Worsley - Oct 2011:-I lost several inches on my first session whichamazed me from such a simple, fuss free andpainless procedure. A Victorian
Christmas
Have you ever wondered what a truly traditional Christmas would be like?
Worsley is about to celebrate it’s annual Christmaslight switch-on (Fri, 2nd Dec) and the festivities include a Victorian Santa's Grotto - just one of themany traditions we have inherited from the Victorians.
No era in history has influenced the way inwhich we celebrate Christmas as much asthe Victorians.
Before Victoria's reign started in 1837, wehad not heard of Santa Claus or ChristmasCrackers. No Christmas cards were sent andmost people did not have holidays from work. The wealth and technologies generated bythe industrial revolution of the Victorian erachanged the face of Christmas forever.
Through his book “A Christmas Carol”,Charles Dickens preserved the Christmascustoms of olde England and is credited withthe great revival of Christmas traditions inthe Victorian era.
Christmas, Victorian Style
...was a joyous occasion and not a commercial affair. First and foremost, it was a religiousholiday, but giving and family were importantthemes.
Christmas Holidays were born. The wealthgenerated by the industrial revolution allowed middle class families to take time off work and celebrate over two days - Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Plus, the invention of the railway allowedfamilies, who had moved away in search ofwork, to return home for a family Christmas.
CHRISTMAS EVEOn Christmas Eve the last of the relatives arrived for the holidays - not only the immediate family, but aunts, uncles, cousinsand grandparents too. It was a celebration devoted to the family.
In the afternoon, a long awaited event, thedoors of the parlour opened and the children finally saw the glorious Christmastree with it's candles, tinsel, beautiful hand-made ornaments, sweets, ribbons andstrings of popcorn and cranberries. Smallwrapped gifts hung from branches underthe tree were the larger ones.
Everyone exchanged gifts and after thegrand unwrapping, the children played withtheir toys and thoughtful handmade giftswere admired.
Next, every took part in a programme of entertainment - reciting poetry, performingshort plays, playing music and group singing.Afterwards, sleepy children were sent to bedas well as tired adults!

CHRISTMAS DAY...started with Christmas Mass. Then afterpicking up the Christmas poultry or meat, aflurry of cooking took place. Turkey was nottraditionally served in England until the late19th century. Instead goose, chicken or roastbeef took pride of place on the Christmastable, followed by Christmas Pudding madefrom beef, raisins and prunes.
After Christmas dinner, clean-up, and afternoon naps, the festivities continuedwith visits to friends. Most shops were open.It was unusual for any of the trades to take aday off. The less fortunate sung Christmascarols door-to-door hoping for donations offood, drink or money. Families also wentChristmas caroling to entertain their neighbours (imagine if we did that now!).
BOXING DAY...was devoted to Charity. Gifts of moneywere put up in small boxes to be given toservants and tradesmen, and distributed tothe needy in the area. Hence the name “Boxing Day”.
The Origins of Our Traditions
THE CHRISTMAS TREE - began when Queen Victoria's German husband, Prince Albert, brought a tree over from Germany to Windsor Castle in the 1840's.
THE GIFTS - most were handmade, so werestarted many months before Christmas.
Items such as embroidered handkerchiefs, bookmarks and other useful gifts were lovingly sewn and crafted during the Autumn and Winter months.
Children's toys originally tended to behandmade and expensive... but with factoriescame mass production and games, dolls, books and clockwork toys all at a moreaffordable price. Christmas stockings, became popular from around 1870.
CHRISTMAS CARDS - The custom of sendingprinted cards was started by Henry Cole, who did not have time to write Christmasletters to all his relatives. So he asked anartist, John Calcott Horsley, to design a card.About 1,000 cards were printed, and thosenot used by Sir Henry were sold by theprinter for one shilling.
MINCE PIES - made with mincemeat andspices - were eaten for the 12 days ofChristmas, ensuring good luck for the next12 months of the year. According to custom, each of the twelve mince pies had to bebaked by someone different.
CRACKERS - Invented by Tom Smith, a London sweet maker in 1846. Originally, began as sweets wrapped in a twist of fancycoloured paper, but developed and soldmuch better when he added love notes(motto's), paper hats, small toys and madethem go off with a BANG!
