• You may be a parent, a health professional or a policymaker.Youmaybesupportingmotherstobreastfeedorareconcernedaboutsociety’shealth,orboth.Whateveryourroleyourworkisvital.Goodinfantfeedingpracticesarethefoundationofahealthy life.Theyaffect infantandyoungchildsurvivalandthelong-termhealthofeveryadult.

• You will have noticed that baby food, bottle and teatcompaniespromotetheirproducts.Thismarketingdirectlycontravenes the International Code of Marketing ofBreastmilkSubstitutes(theCode)whichwasadoptedasaWorldHealthAssemblyresolutionin1981.IftheCodeisignored,yourworkforbreastfeedingwillbemoredifficult.

• TheCodeandsubsequentinfantfeedingresolutionsplayakeypartintheGlobalStrategyforInfantandYoungChildFeedingadoptedattheWorldHealthAssembly(WHA)in2002.

• OurgovernmentsarecommittedtotheCode,butpowerfulcompanies pressure them to evade it. Without the Codein place, initiatives for babies’ health and survival areundermined. Few governments have Code informationcampaigns,sopeoplefeelunsureaboutitandsomemaybeunawareofitsexistence.

• TheCodeisreallyverysimple.Anyonecanlearntomonitorit.DuringthisWorldBreastfeedingWeekwewanttotakeaction for Code implementation. This can make a hugedifference to mothers and babies and to the families,caregiversandhealthprofessionalsworkingtoprotectallinfantsandyoungchildren.

Why the code is important

For most babies, exclusive breastfeedingfor six monthsfollowedbycontinuedbreastfeeding,togetherwithnutritious

complementary foods, for twoyearsorbeyond is thekey tohealth.Nearlyallwomencanbreastfeediftheyaresupportedto be confident and aware of good techniques.Promotionalpracticesunderminetheseskillsthroughsubtlemarketingtricksandmisinformationtohealthprofessionals,mothersandtheirfamilies.Codeimplementationcanstopthis.

Thanks to the work of people like you, breastfeedingrates aregradually increasing. Worldwide, morewomen areexclusivelybreastfeedingduringthefirstsixmonths.Butevenwherebreastfeeding ispartof theculture,practicescanbelessthanidealandwhereartificialfeedingiswidespread,theycan be appalling. Delaying and restricting breastfeeds andgivingotherfoodanddrinksbeforesixmonthsarestillcommonpractices. These reduce breastmilk supply and increase ababy’sriskofinfection.
