As DSL subscriber rates increase, carriers arelooking to use DS3 network interfaces andInverse Multiplexing over ATM (IMA) toprovision DSL in many cases. The ADTRAN®

Total Access® DSLAM Octal IMA AccessModule is designed to interface with theTotal Access Cell Switch Module (CSM) inATM applications. Each of the eight ports

provides either DS1 or E1 interfaces. These

can be used to connect the shelf to an

upstream ATM element or to a DS1 IMA inter-

face of a subtended shelf.

Due to the nature of the ATM switching

fabric, the Total Access Octal IMA Access

Module can be used in either of two capaci-

ties. First, it can subtend a shelf from a host

device. Secondly, it can subtend other devices

acting as the host.

The eight ATM DS1/E1 interfaces corre-

spond to the eight port interfaces on the line

card. The Octal IMA module automatically

swaps from the online to the offline multi-

plexer if one fails or is physically removed.

Each of the eight ports have a single

balanced twisted pair for each direction

of transmission.

User access to the Octal IMA module is

through the SCU via the system bus of the

Total Access DSLAM backplane. The unit

retains provisioning data in a nonvolatile

memory device for recovery after a power loss

and supports optional autoprovisioning

through the SCU.

The module detects CRC errors, bipolar

violations, and frame bit errors in the loop

side receiver. These are used to calculate

Errored Seconds, Severely Errored Seconds

and Unavailable Seconds in accordance with

ANSI T1.231-1997.

The Octal IMA card is capable of both

short- and long-haul signals for the DS1/E1

interface. It can be configured for the stan-

dard DS1 signal (0 to 22.5 db) or for DSX-1

measured from 0 to 655 feet.
