1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
At the request of ATA International Training, the University of the
Witwatersrand will facilitate a 5 day Principles of Mine Occupational Hygienefor Non-Specialists short course with a strong focus on both mining &
industry.
The course will be presented in Johannesburg, South Africa from 19 23
August 2013.
ATA caters for all logistics pertaining to the delivery of the course, in addition
to all in-country logistics for delegates while in South Africa.
The cost for the course is available on request and includes provision for
course fees, accommodation, meals, transport etc (refer to pages 12 13 for
a more detailed breakdown in this respect).
The Course Outline provides a comprehensive review of the training
programme, in addition to a course overview, associated logistics and costs.
ATA IT is responsible for initiating, coordinating, controlling, quality assuring
and executing the training programme and logistics on behalf of all delegates.

2. PREAMBLE
ATA International Training (IT) specializes in emergency medicine,
occupational medicine, occupational hygiene, technical rescue, industrial fire-fighting, health and safety training courses for professionals operating in
remote and isolated environments (e.g. oil and gas, mining, infrastructure,
construction etc).
Our core purpose is to equip these professionals with internationally certified
courses that are generally regarded as being obligatory in respect of Health
and Safety regulation compliance.
These educational offerings are aimed at equipping and empowering national
staff and to facilitate expatriate staff maintaining their knowledge and technical
capabilities.
As a company we specialize in the presentation of off-the-shelf courses, as
well as the design and development of customized courses for clients.
These courses are prepared and presented by individuals who are widely
acknowledged and respected in their relevant fields of expertise.
ATA is positioned to deliver training programmes both locally and
internationally.

3. SCOPE OF THE COURSE
3.1. Aims of the Course
The Course on Principles of Mine Occupational Hygiene for Non-
Specialists will equip persons with operational and other responsibilities in
the mining industry, with basic knowledge of the principles of mine
ventilation and Occupational Hygiene practices in mining
The purpose of the course is to prepare delegates to develop an
appreciation for these support services and the effect they can have on
promoting a culture and practice that supports a goal of zero harm in the
working environment created by mining

3.2. Course Content
An overview of the role of the Mine Health and Safety Inspectorate in
standard setting and policy for Occupational Hygiene
Occupational Hygiene terminology
Hazardous chemical compounds and elementary toxicology
Airborne pollutants and sampling equipment used for measuring airborne
pollutants
Ambient air pollution
Asbestos fibres and how to evaluate samples for respirable fibres
Gases and vapours found in mines, the effects, sampling and measuring
Biological agents and sampling equipment used for these agents
Dermal exposure and surface contamination
Physical agents, the effects they have on humans and how to measure/
evaluate exposure to them
Ergonomics, the associated risk factors and fitting the work environment to
the human being
Health risk assessment, the hierarchy of controls and the reasonably
practicable approach to good Occupational Hygiene practice

At the end of the course, delegates should be able to:
Explain their role in respect of Occupational Hygiene, establishing policy
and setting standards
Discuss how they can intervene to address problems related to
Occupational Hygiene practice
Apply the Legal requirements for Occupational Hygiene monitoring
Understand Occupational Hygiene compliance testing
Have developed an appreciation for statistical analysis of results to
compile an Occupational Hygiene report as required by the Mine Health
and Safety Act
Access detailed information on Occupational Hygiene measurements and
instrumentation used for these measurements
Describe the main components of the mine environment that are relevant
to Occupational Hygiene
Explain the laws of work relating to Occupational Hygiene in the sector

makers, labour inspectors, worker health and safety advocates etc who

5. LOGISTICS
ATA provides 24-hours-on-the-ground-supportto all delegates
An Information Package and Safety & Security brief relating to South
Africa will be provided to all delegates
ATA will facilitate country familiarization, cultural awareness and social
sensitization briefings at the commencement of the course
ATA will facilitate registration with the various educational institutions
ATA reserves, coordinates, manages and quality assures accommodation,
transport, meals and related logistics for the entire duration of the training
programme
ATA will provide a Letter of Invitation for visa purposes and will notify and
coordinate with the relevant Embassies in South Africa when necessary
Course notes are supplied to all delegates
ATA ensures all delegates have suitable travel insurance

7. TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Confirmation of acceptance is subject to availability as the number of
places are limited (i.e. applications are processed on a first come first
serve basis). A reserve is being held on a minimum number of applicants;
if this is not reached, ATA International reserves the right to cancel the
course
ATA will not accept delegates who request to manage their own logistic
arrangements
An invoice will be forwarded after a request has been submitted to attend
the course
100% of the fee is payable on application 8 weeks prior to the course
start date. This is in line with internationally accepted norms and standards
If a delegate cancels up to 7-weeks before the course commencement
date, they will be refunded 50% of the fee
Any cancellations after the 7 week period will be subject to no refund
The above fee is exclusive of any applicable taxes (VAT, WHT etc) that
may apply. In such cases ATA will itemize and add to final invoice
Please note that this amount was calculated at the prevailing exchange
rate at the time of preparing the course outline. Any movement in theexchange rate of more than 5% at date of invoice will result in a change of
the quoted price if applicable, regardless of the validity period referred to
above
ATA is not to be held liable for any travel delays whatsoever
