1. Introduction Applications are invited for admission to the PG programs for the academic session 2011-
2012 as per the details given in this document, alongwith fee in the form of crossed Bank Draft for `500/- drawn in favour of the Registrar, NIT, Hamirpur (HP)-177 005, payable at State Bank of India, NIT Hamirpur (Branch Code No. 10367). Duly filled/completed application should reach in the office of Dean (Academic), National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur (HP)-177 005 by 13/06/2011 upto 5.00PM. The application form may be downloaded from Institute website http://www.nith.ac.in/. Application form found incomplete or received after the last date i.e. 13/06/2011 (in the office of Dean (Academic)), will be rejected without any intimation to the candidate and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard. The candidates should note that the Institute will not be responsible for postal delay or any irregularities in submitting the applications. In case, a candidate wants to apply for programs in more than one department/centre, he/she is required to send separate applications for each program alongwith processing fee of `500/- (Rupees Five Hundred only). In case of non availability of PH candidates, the seats will be filled up from the respective category. 2.1 Eligibility for M.Tech. Programs The applicant must have a Bachelor degree in Engineering/Technology/AMIE in appropriate
discipline or a Master degree in appropriate discipline with CGPI of 6.75 on 10-point scale or equivalent or 60% marks in aggregate wherever marks are awarded. There will be a relaxation of 5% marks (or equivalent CGPI) for SC/ST/PH candidates in the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination.
2.2 Admission Procedure (a) The admission to M.Tech. programs will be based on the valid GATE score of the qualified
candidates in appropriate discipline/branch. In the event of seats remaining vacant, the department may decide to fill up the left out seats by non-GATE candidates through an entrance test. In this case, the admission shall be made on the basis of merit in the entrance test followed by the interview.
(b) Ties in GATE score shall be resolved on the basis of the marks obtained in the qualifying examinations.
(c) Preference may be given to the candidates who have already cleared the qualifying examination. However, the candidates appearing in the final examination of their bachelor program in 2011 can also apply, and if selected, will be admitted provisionally. Such candidates are required to submit the record of CGPI/marks obtained till date. The candidates who are awarded percentage scores shall submit the percentage of marks obtained for all the semesters/years (averaged over all the semesters/years) for which the result is available. Admissions in all such cases will be made purely on provisional basis and the admission will be confirmed only when they submit the mark sheet and a certificate of having passed the bachelor degree/equivalent qualification with at least 60% marks or 6.75 CGPI (on ten point scale). They must submit proof of passing their final examinations with requisite marks/grade by 15/09/2011. Non-fulfillment of this condition will automatically result in the cancellation of their provisional admission and their fee shall be forfeited.
(d) The applicants shall apply for admission on the prescribed forms which can be downloaded from Institute website. The duly completed application must reach the office of Dean (Academic) latest by 13/06/2011 upto 5.00PM. The applications shall be scrutinized by the respective Departmental Selection Committee (DSC) of the Departments/Centre. The list of shortlisted candidates shall be displayed by the concerned Head of Department on Institute website on 23/06/2011, and no separate

call letter will be issued. (e) The counseling and admission of shortlisted candidate will be held on 05/07/2011 at
9.00AM in the concerned department/centre for which candidates are required to appear in person. The candidates may come prepared to stay over more than a day to allow the respective DSC to complete the formalities related to admission process.
(f) On approval of the Chairman, Senate, the Head of Department will issue the admission letters to the candidates, who will be required to accept the offer of admission by depositing the prescribed fee upto 12/07/2011 (5:00PM).
(g) In case, a candidate does not accept the offer by paying the prescribed fee by the specified deadline, the offer of admission may stand withdrawn and the admission may be offered to the candidates in the waiting list, if any, in the order of merit.
(h) The offer of admission may also stand withdrawn if the candidate who has accepted the offer and fails to register by the last date of registration.
(i) Sponsored Candidates: A candidate who fulfills above eligibility criteria and who is sponsored by his/her employer must have been in service of the sponsoring organization for at least two years on 01/07/2011. Moreover, the sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large scale Government organization/Private industry or a reputed technical institute. The sponsoring organization must specifically undertake to relieve the candidate to pursue the program for its full duration. The applicant must attach the relevant sponsorship certificate from his/her employer preferably on letter head pad of the institution/organization/industry along with the application.
(j) Admission in an M.Tech. program shall be made only if there are at least Four candidates.
(k) The candidates are required to produce the following documents in original as well as two copies thereof at the time of counseling/admission on 05/07/2011.

3.1 Eligibility for Admission
Ph.D. in Engineering/Architecture (including Centres) The applicant must have a Masters degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture with marks not below 60% or CGPI not below 6.75 on a 10 point scale. Applicant with a Bachelor degree in Engineering/Architecture or Masters Degree in Applied Science or any appropriate discipline with a minimum of 75% marks/8.0 CGPI (on ten point scale) with sufficient experience and publications can also apply. There will be a relaxation of 5% marks (or equivalent CGPI) for SC/ST/PH candidates in the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination. As per various notices circulated by the AICTE, all the qualifications acquired through distance mode at Diploma, Bachelors and Masters level in the field of Engineering, Technology, Architecture, and Town Planning are not recognized. Such applicants with degrees from distance mode may not be considered towards eligibility.
Ph.D. in Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics The applicant must have a Master Degree in the relevant Science subject with marks not below 60% or CGPI not below 6.75 on a 10 point scale. Applicant with Bachelor Degree in Engineering or in an allied field with a minimum of 75% marks/8.0 CGPI (on ten point scale) with sufficient experience and publications can also apply. There will be a relaxation of 5% marks (or equivalent CGPI) for SC/ST/PH candidates in the minimum marks required in the qualifying examination.
3.2 Admission Procedure (a) The applicants shall apply for admission on the prescribed forms which can be
downloaded from Institute website. The duly completed application must reach the office of Dean (Academic) latest by 13/06/2011 upto 5.00PM.
(b) The applications shall be scrutinized by the Departmental Selection Committee (DSC) of different departments/centres. The list of shortlisted candidates shall be displayed on Institute website by respective Head of Department/Centre on 23/06/2011 and no separate call letter will be issued.
(c) The shortlisted candidate will be required to appear in person for Written Test and Interview and/or presentation or as decided by DSC, on 04/07/2011 at 9.00 AM. However, the DSC may decide separate terms and conditions in respect of candidates who have qualified UGC/CSIR JRF (Exam)/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship Holder or have passed M.Phil. program for Ph.D. The candidates are expected to discuss their research area/interest at the time of interview. The candidates may come prepared to stay over more than a day to allow the respective DSC to complete the formalities related to admission process.
(d) The admission to Ph.D. program would be either directly or through M.Phil. wherever such criterion is applicable. Respective DSC must specify the admission criterion/mode clearly for the information of prospective candidates in the list of shortlisted candidates.
(e) On approval by the Chairman, Senate, the Head of the Department/Centre will issue the admission letters to the selected candidates, who will be required to accept the

offer of admission by depositing the prescribed fee upto 12/07/2011 (5:00PM). (f) In case, a candidate does not pay the prescribed fee by the specified deadline, the
offer of admission may stand withdrawn and the admission may be offered to the candidates in the waiting list, if any, in order of merit.
(g) The selected candidates will have to register on or before the last registration date as specified in the academic calendar and register for the course work in consultation with the Supervisor/Convener DPGC/SRC as the case may be. Further, they have also to complete 180 days of mandatory residential requirement at a stretch depending on the availability of the courses floated.
(h) The selected candidate, who has completed all the examinations including project/thesis examination and the viva voce before the date of registration but is unable to produce the certificate as proof of having passed and secured the minimum specified qualifying marks, may be considered for provisional admission. However, if admitted provisionally, they will be required to produce the evidence of their having passed the qualifying degree examination by 15/09/2011, failing which the admission may be cancelled.
(i) The candidates are required to produce the following documents in original as well as two copies thereof at the time of counseling/admission on 04/07/2011.

3.3 Admission of Sponsored Candidates
i. A candidate who is sponsored by his/her employer and also meets the additional conditions specified in sub clause iii (below) may be admitted if found suitable by the DSC.
ii. All the sponsored candidates must attach the relevant sponsorship certificate preferably on letter head pad of the institution/organization/industry along with the application. Moreover, the sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large scale Government organization/Private industry or a reputed technical institute.
iii. A sponsored candidate must have been in service of the sponsoring organization for at least two years on 01/07/2011. The sponsoring organization must specifically undertake to relieve him/her to pursue the program for its full duration. Such candidates are required to submit No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer/organization stating that:
a. His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for Research. b. Candidates willing to register as part time candidate will have to reside in the

Institute for a period of not less than one year during his/her registration for the degree to complete the course work. However, this condition can be relaxed for candidate working at/around Hamirpur (HP) within a road distance of about 50 KMs without any relaxation in the course work requirements.
3.4 Admission to Off Campus Program for Ph.D.
1. A candidate working in an R&D establishment or in other institution/organization, which is equipped with the necessary research and library facilities, may be considered for admission to various Ph.D. programs as per eligibility specified above. Such a candidate must be sponsored by his/her employer and must have been in employment with the sponsoring organization for at least two years on 01/07/2011. Moreover, the sponsoring organization must be a reputed medium or large scale Government organization/Private industry or a reputed technical institute. The employer must explicitly undertake to relieve him/her to stay on the campus to enable the candidate to complete the Course work, Comprehensive Examination and State of the Art seminar as per the requirement of Institute/PG Manual.
2. A candidate applying for admission to the off campus registration program must provide detailed information about the research facilities available at his/her organization and a certificate that these would be available to him/her for carrying out research.
3. The candidate has to clear the course work requirements as specified above.
4. Approval of Admission On the recommendation of the DSC, the list of candidates recommended for admission will be sent for approval of Chairman Senate through Chairman SPGC and Dean (Academic). After approval of the Chairman Senate, concerned Head of the Department/Centre will issue the admission letters to the selected candidates. All the students/research scholars once admitted to various M.Tech./Ph.D. programs, shall be governed by the Institute norms.

7. Financial Assistance The Institute may provide financial assistance to M.Tech./Ph.D. students in the form of teaching or research assistantships (referred to as Institute Assistantship). Assistantships are awarded on a semester to semester basis for a period of up to four semesters for M.Tech. students (with valid GATE Score) and up to eight semesters for Ph.D. regular students (depending upon the availability of funds). The stipend for the assistantship is paid at the approved rates as notified by AICTE/MHRD from time to time. A student is expected to devote about eight hours per week towards job(s) assigned to him/her by the department. In case of Ph.D. students, following is the minimum qualifications for the stipend:
