YEAR 10 FRENCH EXCHANGE TRIP FROM METZ On Tuesday 30th January, our partner school from Jarny, near Metz, arrived at school
for the return leg of the first exchange to leave the school in twelve years.
The students from the Lycée Jean Zay were hosted with exceptional hospitality by our
families, who pulled out all of the stops to show the exchange students what life in the
UK is like. The students visited us for a day in school, where they met with some LFC
players and shadowed our students in the afternoon.
We took all of the participants to Anfield, where they had an amazing tour. The
highlight for some of our students was the view of Goodison Park, followed by an
afternoon in Manchester, where our whole team posed with the FA Cup.
We also spent a jam-packed day at the LFC Academy, training with the coaches and
touring their facilities. After the French students spent the afternoon in Liverpool at the
Beatles museum, we hot-footed it over to Kirkby to watch LFC U-18s play against
Stoke. Unfortunately, the luck that we took to Metz with us didn’t come back with the
French contingent (Metz won all of their games whilst we were in France and have
subsequently continued their winning streak)!
The French students left us full of fish and chips, roast dinners and warm memories that
will no doubt last a lifetime.
I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the Exchange such an enriching
experience for our students, especially the host families who made all of our visitors
feel at home.
Mr Herd, Head of Modern Foreign Languages.

YEAR 8 PARENTS' CONSULTATION EVENING WITH STAFF Dear Parent/Guardian,
A consultation session for parents of Year 8 pupils is to be held on Thursday 8th March
2018. The time available for the consultation will be from 4.00pm until 7.00pm.
We are continuing with the appointment system in the hope of using both your time
and that of the teachers more efficiently. All staff will be located in the Sports Hall.
Towards the back of the student planner there are some notes pages. Your child can
make a record of his/her appointment times on these pages.
Due to Year 8 now entering their GCSE option period, this is a crucial time in their
education. This Parent Consultation Evening offers a perfect opportunity for you to
discuss progression onto GCSE courses, raise any concerns you may have regarding
your sons/daughters education, discuss the recent LP2 results and also provide
teachers with the opportunity to provide feedback on your child’s work to date.
Therefore, should there be any special difficulties which prevent you from attending
on Thursday 8th March 2018, please contact myself or Mrs Quirk, Year 8 Student
Manager, so that an alternative arrangement can be organised.
I look forward to seeing you,
Yours sincerely
Mr T Reilly
Year 8 Progress Leader
YEAR 8 AND YEAR 10 REPORTS Year 8 and Year 10 reports will be published today and given out to pupils during form
time. Reports can also be viewed by visiting Moodle.

options process and the importance of making well-informed decisions. The first is at
7pm for the parents and students of Form Groups 8A-8D, the second at 7.45 pm for
the parents and students of Form Groups 8E-8H.

subject represented for students and their parents to visit and talk to teachers and
current students about the various courses that are offered. The evening will close at

SCIENCE ACADEMY NEWS We have two opportunites for our A Level scientists coming up!
Firstly, in March, The British Science Association run a series of events up and down the
country as part of British Science Week. This year there are events taking place at
Hope University and we will be taking a group of students to their ‘Dune Ecology’
workshop. This workshop ties in with the A Level curriculum for our biology students and
will give them the opportunity to learn about environments they may not have come
across so far in their course.
The second opportunity for our students is with our partners at Whiston Hospital. The
Science Academy has worked with Whiston Hospital for a number of years now and
we have been asked to put forward students for their ‘Access to Medicine’ course
they are running over the Easter break. If you are interested in this course please see
Dr Gordon (B207 or the Science Office) as soon as possible for more details.
Dr Gordon, Science Academy Coordinator.
BUILDING RESILIENCE IN PUPILS- 3B4ME The whole school is focusing on a new initiative in school to
help pupils work more independently in lesson and at home.
All pupils have been given a sticker to put on
the back cover of their planner with the focus being; try
things before you ask your teacher for help- Try 3B4ME!
Education research has shown that there are many benefits
for children that learn to work independently and try to
complete a hard task by themselves.
What are the benefits of independent learning for students?
Improved academic performance
Increased motivation and confidence
Greater student awareness of their limitations and their ability to manage them
Enabling teachers to provide differentiated tasks for students
Builds resilience and a 'don't give up' attitude to hard tasks
Please support your child by directing them to this at home when completing
homework.
Thank you for your support.
Miss Bakstad, Head of PE.

SITE SECURITY
PARENTS Reminder that you must report to the school reception when you come onto the
school site. This applies at the end of the school day/after school hours. EXTERNAL AGENCIES If your child is working with any external agencies that we are not correctly aware of,
can you please inform school. This includes referrals to CAMHS, young carers or any
similar agency.
It is imperative we have this information to enable us to effectively support your
son/daughter in school.
PROM DRESSES AND SUITS – PLEASE HAND IN YOUR OLD ONES Some of our students are put off going to the Prom by the cost of the event. Many
Prom dresses and suits are worn only once. Your sons and daughters quickly
grow out of them.
We would really appreciate it if you would like to donate your old Prom dress or suit to
the school. We will then loan it out to those students struggling to afford their own. We
can then do this year after year.
Thank you to everyone so far who has kindly donated their dress/suit.
Mr Pout, Executive Principal.

YEAR 8 ASPIRATION DAY AND CAREERS CONVENTION Wednesday 21st February 2018 Year 8 pupils enjoyed a rewarding day considering their futures. They met with a
number of ex pupils to discover different career journeys and took part in workshops
provided by Careers Connect and Liverpool John Moore’s University. They also spent
time at the Career’s Fair meeting a range of local employers and universities.
This event will support Year 8 in making important choices about qualifications and
potential career routes as they chose their options this term.
The day helped to give our pupils a real insight into the world of work in 21st Century
Britain.
Mrs Ayre, Head of Life Skills.

COMPUTER SCIENCE NEWS Earlier this month, Sixth Form Computer Science and IT students took part in an
employer experience day at Treatwell HQ in Holborn, London. Treatwell are a
technology company that provide the world’s leading marketplace for booking hair
and beauty appointments; the ‘Just Eat’ of the beauty world.
Our day started with a tour of the Treatwell offices. Students were really impressed with
the open plan design of the office with areas for account managers, product
designers and developers to work together effectively.
Computer Science and IT students were then split in to two groups with the CS
students working on a variety of tasks including one that Treatwell give to candidates
on interview. IT students worked on HTML and CSS web design activities that are
fundamental to their course work.
Lunch was followed by a workshop delivered by Treatwell’s Head of design, Jonas
Lekevičius. Jonas talked about how keeping it simple was imperative to design and
gave our students some extremely useful tips on how to appeal to users of technology.
Students then took part in an Agile software development game that demonstrated
the importance of working closely with clients when developing solutions. The game
involved drawing a picture and then describing it for others to draw. The game was
really interesting as the final product ended up not looking anything like the original;
the purpose of the game was for students to understand that sometimes there can be
miscommunication when reading client specifications so it is better to work face to
face and produce prototypes as you develop solutions.
One of the best moments was saved until last as the Year 13s had the opportunity to
present their websites to the employees in the room; while the websites were in an
early developmental stage, Treatwell staff were eager to provide their expertise and
the impact is already evident in students work.
The day finished with a Q and A session with staff from different departments of
Treatwell. This gave students a real insight into how to get into the technology sector
and the broad range of jobs available. They really emphasised how industry is crying
out for new recruits and the interesting and varied jobs available.
Treatwell were so impressed with our students that talks are already underway about
an overnight visit next year!
