Introduction

The aims of the two-day workshop was to give the pupils opportunity to influence the aesthetic of the school with two statements in mind:

The aim of the workshop was to give the pupils an idea of how a designer might approach the project of developing academic, asprirational signage using wayfinding, brainstorming, development of ideas and design skills.

The following pages display the results.

Produce graphics/signage that will help invigorate, direct and engage students with the idea that Homebases are for learning.

Given the mission to achieve Dyslexia Charter Status, visualise around the centre both academic and aspirational messages.

Feedback on current signage from pupils

Myself and a group of 10 pupils from varying year groups conducted a wayfinding mission around Kirkby Sports College’s new building to encourage discussion on what they thought about the signage in the school and the space in general.

“Reception’ sign is not clear enough.”

“don’t know what is on each floor ...improve map”

“The noticeboards in the reception area look messy.”

“Like the banners (in Atrium) – think the photos could be better”

“Signs need to be bigger and/or clearer.”

“Could use colour coding throughout.”

“Atrium is too white. Needs more colour or banners.”

“Like the tutors favourite books display. Could pupils do it too?”

“The library needs a sign.”

“Can we have a house league table?”

Brainstorming ideas

Some suggestions: “Bigger ‘Reception’ sign... above the desk.”

“Put double-sided poster cases in the reception area windows”

“Welcome to Kirkby Sports College on mat at front door”

“Disguise ‘ugly’ boxes/fire extinguisher with a poster board in reception”

“Big ‘G’ or KSC crest on Atrium floor”

“Pictures of happy students or aspirational words in front windows.”

“The words ‘Inspire’, ‘Believe’, ‘Achieve’ in colour on columns.”

“Inspirational quotes from sports stars/famous people.”

“Like the tutors favourite books display. Could pupils do it too?”

“Decorate walls with more pictures.”

Computer generated visuals: Art

Impactful, fun, quirky handcrafted lettering with paint splodges to represent the Art department.

The addition of a pencil or paintbrush along the wall leading to the art room (see earlier sketches) could double as a directional arrow.

Computer generated visuals: Dance (not completed)

There were a couple of ideas for this space which we didn’t have time to render, such as:

Dance steps from varying dances with dotted lines to suggest movement working along the wall towards the dance studio entrance.

Silhouettes of various types of dancer – ballet, breakdancing, tango, salsa, latin, ballroom, etc. All creating a sense of movement and fun.
