Wewould like to seize this opportunity toexpressourgratitudeandbestwishes toDr.AliceFranck,whoafterthreeyearsintheroleofCoordina-torofCEDEJKhartoumhasresumed,startingfromSeptember2016,herpositionas‘MaîtredeConfé-rence’inGeographyatParis1Pantheon-Sorbonne.Notwithstanding,sheremainsveryactivewithintheSudanesedomainanddeeplyaffiliatedtotheCE-DEJKhartoumasanAssociateResearcher.

WearealsoproudtoillustrateournewlogodesignedbyJulienRabotteau.TheprominantBlueandWhite colors not only evoque themeeting oftheBlueandWhiteNileswithinSudan,butequal-lysymbolizetransnationalconnectionswiththewi-der region,extending fromtheGreatLakes to theMiddle-East,throughtheHornofAfricaandtheMe-diterraneanshores.

On April 6-7th2017, theObservatoire de l’Afrique de l’EstwillorganizeaninternationalWorskshop/Conferencein Hendaya (France). This meeting explores definitionspertainingtoupcomingresearch/publicationsrelatedtotheprogramme.Publicconferenceswillalsobeheldonpo-litical,economicandreligiousstakesinNorthEastAfricainthecontemporaryera.Twohistorianswillpresenttheirresearchabout thehistoryof the “ChateauObservatoireAbbadia”.

She adopted acomparative perspective (Khartoum-Lagos), focusing onthefollowingtopics:theconstructionofsocialauthorityinpopularareas,theroleofgrassrootorganizations(“traditio-nal”andgovernmental)inurbanlocalgovernments,theireffectsintermsofproductionoforderandeverydayjusticeat thescaleof theneighborhood.Fromabottom-upap-proach,shestudieshowpopularareasaregovernedintwomajorAfricanmetropolises,raisingsomeissuessuchas:Whichdiversityofactorsisrevealed?Howtheseareasareorderedandhowthesocialrelationshipsareshapedbytheinhabitantsinrelationtothestate?Whatdoespowerrela-tionshipstellusabouttheurbangovernments?Sheusestheethnographicmethodtoenterintothefabricofpowerrelationships,includingtheambiguitiesandthecomplexitythatitimplies.Sheparticularlycomparestheoverlappingoflocalauthoritiesbetweentraditionalrulers(baaleandba-loguninLagos;‘omda,nazirandshyukhinKhartoum)andlocal governmental organizations (Community Develop-mentAssociationsinLagos,popularcommitteesinKhar-toum).Thoselocal institutionshavebeenhighly involvedinthemaintenanceoforderandintheeverydayjusticeattheneighborhoodscale.Theyareessentialintermediariesbetweenthestateandthesociety,alsoblurringthelinesbetweentheso-calledformalandinformal.Howdosomeactors negotiate under constraint their relationswith thestateisthusonemajorissueraisedbytheresearch.

Clément Méléard isa student inGeographyatParis1Panthéon-SorbonneUniversity.UnderthesupervisionofDrAliceFranck(Paris1)andDrRaphaëlleChevrillon-Guibert(IRD),ClémentisstudyingartisanalgoldmininginSudan.ThesubstantiallossoftheSudaneseoilrevenue,followingthesplitwithSouthSudanin2011,hasledthecountrytodirectitseconomytowardsitsgoldpotential.Thisnewfieldbringstogetherdifferentcross-cuttingissuesthatstillneedtobeexplored.

Transient Students & ResearchersMax Münch,astu-dentinAnthropolo-gyattheUniversityofBayreuth.ForhisMaster’sthesis,heconducted threemonthsoffieldworkinaQuranicschoolinNorthernKordo-fan. In an immer-siveprocess,theresearchwasbaseduponthemulti-sen-sorialfocalpointsofdidactics,socializationandembodiedknowledge.Heparticipatedinthedailylearningroutinetogetaccesstothesocialandexperientialwaysofteaching,learningandknowing.

Vivian HartliefisaDutchmasterstudent.Duringmybache-lorstudiesLiberalArtsandSciences,shespecialisedintwoscientificfields;bothReligionSciencesandEnvironmentalSciences.ThesetwospecialisationslaidthefoundationforhermasterstudyInternationalDevelopmentStudies,whichsheobtainsatUtrechtUniversity.ForthismasterstudyshechosetoconductherresearchinSudan.ThegeneraltopicforherresearchistheSyriancommunitylivinginKhartoumandthechallengestheyfaceinregardtocreatingasustai-nablelivelihood.
