Membership UpdateMembership in Meridian Hills is holding steady and with 768 families who are members, it’s easy to notice the bustling activity when you enter the grounds. Although we’ve had a successful summer in accepting 35 of the finest people in the city as members of our Club, we have to continue to overcome the typical rate of attrition. Our membership levels remain positive, with a net gain of 3 more members than we began with at the beginning of the fiscal year. These results are idealistic and many thanks go to the members who continue to keep membership in the forefront of their thoughts. There are many members who act as ambassadors for executives new to the city and they’ve done a tremendous job of recommending them to Meridian Hills. Once they are new members, the rest of the membership is so welcoming that it doesn’t take long for new members to begin developing their own social network.
We all can attest to enjoying recreational activities like playing golf, tennis, hanging out with our family at the pool, enjoying a meal, or a combination of those, but none of it would be as enjoyable without the friends we’ve made at the Club. Meridian Hills is a unique, special place and that is attributable to our members. If you think of anyone who’s a good candidate for membership, please contact the Membership Department and they will provide them with the information they need to determine if the Club is the best fit for them.

Membership Update
Just as we reached back to existing members and provided an opportunity to convert their membership, we are looking at an initiative to reach back to former Class "A" (golfing) members and provide them with an opportunity to restore their membership. To be eligible, a former "A" member must have previously paid their initiation fee in full or are prepared to pay the balance of that initiation fee upon rejoining. A former member is required to reapply through the membership committee (same process as a new member) and, if approved, is obligated to pay $5,000 for every full year since their membership lapsed up to a maximum of $20,000. This program will remain open until year end (12/31/11). For further details, please feel free to contact our Membership Director, Lisa Strachota, at 860-1556 or via e-mail - [email protected] or Ashley Goldman at 255-2496 or [email protected].

We have had two tough summers in a row for golf courses here in central Indiana. The good news is we fared much better than most this year and now we are beginning to get cooler nights and lower humidity. The biggest area impacted for us this year was definitely our rough. We do not chemically treat the rough with fungicides and we have limited irrigation potential once you get past the first cut of rough. Since we did have some decline in the rough, we will be slit seeding more disease and drought resistant varieties throughout the month of September.
September is also the best time for aerification. We will be aerifying greens and fairways Monday, September 12th and Tuesday, 13th, therefore the golf course will be closed all day on both days. There is a chance we could open later in the afternoon on Tuesday, if we finish ahead of schedule. I would also like to limit all practice at the driving range during the week of the 12th to the synthetic tee. With no rain this year we have not germinated very much seed and need to be able to keep it wet for five to seven days while it is still warm. This minor inconvenience should set us up for the remainder of the golf season and put us ahead of the curve for next season. Thank you for all your support this season and please come out and enjoy some great fall golf at the club. As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me or just wave me down on the course.Sincerely,Jim HessGolf Course Superintendent
