To the relief of local residents and interstatetravelers, a two-year road improvement projectsprawling the length and width of a smallsouthern Minnesota town recently ended. Thework featured bridge demolition and construc-tion along with nearly 20 mi. (32 km) of roadimprovements on a system of interstate, stateand county highways.

Made up of four separate road projects, thework took place in Owatonna, Minn., locatedon I-35, 70 mi. (112 km) south of Minneapolis. There is no doubt that residents are pleased

that construction crews and equipment left andthe dust has settled. A city map shows the high-ways are major connections to this rural townof 25,000 residents. Statistics show that theycarry high volumes of traffic. The combined ADT on I-35 and TH 14

Construction spending in September reacheda new seven-year high and climbed at the fastestrate since early 2006, according to an analysis bythe Associated General Contractors of America. However, total spending on nonresidential con-struction declined by 0.1 percent betweenAugust and September as growing workforceshortages likely impacted the amount firms were

able to perform for the month.Overall demand for construction continues

to grow at a very robust rate, said KenSimonson, the associations chief economist. It appears, however, that many firms per-

forming private nonresidential work could notfind enough qualified workers in September tokeep pace with growing demand.

Construction spending in September totaled$1.094 trillion at a seasonally adjusted annualrate, 0.6 percent higher than the August totaland 14.1 percent higher than in September2014, Simonson said. He noted that the totalwas the highest since March 2008 and theyear-over-year growth rate was the strongest

Equipment Veteran Makes Inroads for Autolube in FarmingJohn Goodridge is on a mission to

introduce farmers, contractors andmunicipalities to the dollar andsense of adding automatic lubrica-tion to their equipment that runs dayin and day out. I got to know the Beka-Max sys-

tem because of my past experiencebeing a John Deere dealer, he said. They became standard equipmenton the self-propelled forage har-vesters, and during all that time, dueto their reliability and robustness, wenever had any service calls becausethe lube system was not working.According to Dave McDougall,

product manager of Beka-Max ofAmerica Inc., the main pump holdsapproximately 6 to 8 tubes of greaseand is transparent so the operatorcan see if its getting low. Grease isrelatively inexpensive when com-pared to the cost of repairs, and evenmore so compared to the cost ofdowntime.

Still in the FieldAfter 30 years in the farm equip-

ment industry, Goodridge is nowworking for his son as a salesman at

George & Swede Sales and ServiceInc., in the heavy equipment busi-ness. However he is still selling tofarmers in addition to contractorsand municipalities. George &Swede Sales and Service, inPavilion, N.Y., serves 17 westernand central New York counties andrepresents Hyundai, Link-Belt,Yanmar, other short line manufac-turers and Beka-Max.Goodridge has always enjoyed

the relationships he has built overthe years with the farm communityand gravitates to those people.Whatever the size of the farm, theyall seem to grow, forcing them to bemore efficient and to do more in thesame amount of time. As these are machines, there will

always be downtime, but it can beminimized. The Beka-Max systemis just another way to ensure asmuch uptime as possible. Maybenot for every machine, but criticalfor those key machines that cannotafford to be down, said Goodridge. It really hit home the other day

when I had to tell a farmer he need-ed $30,000 to repair the damage to

his wheel loader from the lack ofgrease. I called Beka-Max and thesales rep came out and I figured outwhat the cost would be for a newloader. Based on his recent experi-ence, at approximately $7,000installed, the Beka-Max system wasa no brainer. Goodridge reported that, together

with Beka-Max, he recently deliv-ered and installed autolube systemson three loaders, a manure spreader,a feed truck and an Oxbo hay merg-er. Im sure more will come, he

    said.According to McDougall,

Anytime you can take the humanfactor out of a task and have it donewith automation, it saves valuabletime for everyone. It also allows youto be more efficient and the paybackadds to the bottom line. For more information, call

Aerial Access Equipment: Safe Practices Are KeyBy Jeff WinkeCEG CORRESPONDENT

Apparently workers on scaffolding aretougher than most. For them, fall protectionis not required by OSHA until 10 ft. (3m).For employees in general industry, the fall-protection height is 4 ft. (1.2 m) above alower level. In construction work, the thresh-old height is 6 ft. (1.8 m). For those working on aerial lift platforms,

the idea of anything falling is of major con-cern. The OSHA Fact Sheet-Aerial Liftsstates pretty clearly that workers Use abody harness or a restraining belt with a lan-yard attached to the boom or bucket.Any time anyone is working from elevat-

ed heights, there are dangers. It makes nodifference if working from aerial work plat-forms, boom lifts, scissor lifts or verticalmast climbers, the safety and health con-cerns are the same.Steven DeMore, a 34-year aerial lift vet-

eran and president of DeMores InnovativeDesign Inc., Menomonee Falls, Wis., offersadvice in three key areas:1.Know your equipment with its controls,

warning signs and signals, as well as yourwork surroundings.2.Never assume that what you cannot see

wont hurt you. Stop, look and pay attentionto whats above and below; your concern forsafety is equally as important for the peoplebelow as for yourself.3.Be organized. Clutter and too many

items on the lift platform could create anunsafe condition, which could cause items tofall as well as create possible tripping haz-ards.Consider that every project involving aer-

ial access equipment has three distinct phas-es pre-operation, during operation andafter operation phases with safety andhealth concerns for each.

Pre-OperationInspect your work area in and out of the

aerial lift always look and think ahead,DeMore stated. Do not become compla-cent, for yourself as well as your coworkers. If the young workers see the old timers con-cerned about lift safety theyll see that as thenorm and be more likely to participate ingood, safe aerial lift usage.Paying close attention to pre-use inspec-

tion of the equipment is critical. Keeping achecklist with the equipment and requiringoperators to literally check off each itembefore signing and dating will help preventoperators from hastily using an aerial liftwith mechanical problems that becomeapparent when its too late. Most aerial access equipment manufac-

    turers provide equipment checklists that

cover everything from proper fluid levels tochecking hydraulic, air, pneumatic, fuel andelectrical systems to ensuring that mechani-cal features and locking pins are in place in other words, all the important details thatshould be looked at before operating thepiece of equipment. The OSHA Fact Sheet recommends a

work zone inspection before using aerialaccess equipment. This inspection includeslooking up to see if there are dangerous over-head hazards such as power lines and com-munication cables. The University of Kentucky provides its

lift users with an Aerial Lift SafetyProgram booklet, which includes cautionsabout wind: Consideration shall be given tothe amount of wind. Follow the manufactur-ers instruction regarding operation in windyconditions. As a general rule aerial lifts shallnot be operated in winds exceeding 25 mph, although this can vary depending on themodel of equipment: At 20 mph wind speeds or anticipated

gusts, lifts will be lowered to a maximumheight of 20 ft. (6 m). At 25 mph wind speeds or anticipated

gusts, lifts will be grounded. If at any time, personnel/staff feels

unsafe, due to weather or wind conditionsprior to using an aerial lift, they may make adecision to ground the lift and cease ... noquestions asked.

Safe Operations Operator safety is paramount, which

means making sure that platform gates oropenings are closed and that the operatordoes not climb or lean over guardrails orhandrails. Planks, ladders or other devicesshould not be used on the work platform. Any workers on an aerial lift platform or

bucket should use a body harness or arestraining belt with a lanyard attached to theboom or bucket. Accidents happen whenthey are least expected so it makes no senseto forgo these simple, required life-savingdevices.I learned from my days working on a

factory production line that if I came in andadjusted my moves enough during produc-tion, I could actually work safer and moreefficiently to a point where I could workback into production those parts that the pre-vious shift operator had set aside becausethey had been overwhelmed and could notkeep up, DeMore stated. I knew when Igot to the construction trade and started

working on aerial access equipment thatsafety and efficiency skills were intermixed.I discovered that working safe would trans-fer into efficiency.

Post-Operation Shut DownWhen the days projects are completed

and its time to descend to ground level, theshut-down process should be in mind. Safe shutdown can begin after finding a

suitable parking area, placing the platform inthe stowed position, placing controls in neu-tral, idling the engine for gradual cooling, turning off electrical power, and taking thenecessary steps to prevent unauthorized use. The courteous operator wants to leave the

equipment in the same condition theydhope to find it the next time they work clean, refueled and ready to work. Aerial access equipment can be the best,

safest way to perform work at elevatedheights, DeMore said. Caution combinedwith safe practices can ensure productive useof the various types of lift equipment nowavailable.

(This story also can be found onConstruction Equipment Guides Web siteat www.constructionequipmentguide.com.)CEG

Steve DeMore is shown with his Aerial Tool Bin a product he created after a few ankle injuries and back issues from repet-itive stooping to pick up tools and parts on the platform floor. The organizing bin is secured to the guardrail and keeps every-thing at mid-body height.
