Gosh, where did March go? Luckily we
have signs of the real spring in the air
which gives us something to look
forward to after some very wet weeks.
Our thoughts go out to those that have
been affected by the adverse weather
and flooding.
At the time of writing, we are heading towards our Annual
Council Meeting in Ruislip. If you get to see this before 6
April, it is not too late to get an observer ticket (£5) to come
along and meet the Board, your Representatives and our
guest speaker Angeline Gore of Browns Community Service.
Please contact us via [email protected] if you are
interested. The delegate information has been sent to your
WIs, so if you are a delegate, please contact your secretary
for everything you will need prior to attending the meeting.
The meeting is a key event on our annual calendar and it
would be nice to be supported by you, our members.
Don’t forget the opportunity to enter both the draw for a
Denman Bursary and the Denman Dip! For those who
have no idea what I am talking about, the Federation and the
Craft Committee give bursaries towards a Denman course
and the draw takes place at the ACM. Let us know you wish
to enter by post, or email to [email protected].
For the Denman Dip, all you need to do is put £1 into a
sealed envelope with your name on it. Bring the envelope to
the meeting, drop it into the office or give it to anyone who is
M F W I A N N U A L
C O U N C I L M E E T I N G
attending. One envelope will be drawn and that person will
receive the contents of all the envelopes to spend towards a
course at Denman. You don’t need to attend the ACM to have
a chance to win. (Take a look at page 7 - we had so much fun
at Denman, as did Pat of Iver WI, using her bursary.)
It is our Centenary in 2021 and one of the events that we are
holding will be a Centenary Federation weekend at
Denman on Friday 8—Sunday 10 October 2021.
Please let Angela Chessman know if you are interested in
attending via [email protected] and save the date in
your diary. Angela will be providing further information and
course options as soon as possible, once Denman has
released details.
Quick reminder for MCS Reps: have you updated your
records? There is still a discrepancy between active members
and the amount of subs paid across the Federation. This
means WI Life magazine is going to people that are no longer
members, a waste of both money and resources. If you need
any help with the MCS, please contact [email protected]
and we will help you and in some cases, update it for you.
I am looking forward to a couple of WI Birthday invites over
the coming days, a craft session or two for WIs and look
forward to hearing of plans for the coming Group Meetings
which I can hopefully attend.
Lastly, we say farewell and thank you to our Federation
Secretary who is leaving us at the end of March. Best wishes
to you for the future, Lynda.
Regards,
Lorraine x

Louise Camby was the speaker at our
February meeting, talking about Aloe
Vera. Its origins can be traced back over
4000 years and its properties have been
used for medicinal reasons ever since.
We learned that the inside of the plant
can be used for many medical conditions
ranging from treatment of burns through
to helping people with joint problems
such as arthritis and also digestive
problems. Louise brought along many
products made from this amazing plant
which our members were able to test and
purchase.
Many of us took up this opportunity and
I am sure those of us who don’t already
own an Aloe Vera plant will soon become
proud owners.
Kim Broadbent
We decided to celebrate Chinese New
Year at our February 2020 meeting by
holding a Mahjong demonstration. Two
of our members had recently been on a
course at Denman and were delighted
to share their knowledge of this
fascinating game with us. After telling
us about the history of the game, they
went through a demonstration on what
is a really complex game to master.
Chinese nibbles, fortune cookies and
jasmine tea were served alongside our
usual tea and homemade cake.
In keeping with our international
themed meetings our March 2020
meeting was a talk on Indian weddings.
Jenny Hanrahan
Bedfont Belles WI was invited in January
to a 'Thank you’ afternoon tea at St
Mary's Church, for members of the
community who had supported the
church during 2019.
We visited to the Bank of England
Museum in February. We tried to lift a
13kg gold bar and saw a beautiful flower
arrangement made of £50 notes. Some
of us then visited the roof garden at 120
Fenchurch Street.
Our February meeting was a talk by
Pauline Fowler, whose company makes
prosthetics and animatronics for the film
and television industry and she brought
along some examples! We braved the
elements for our February walk along the
Regents Canal.

Around the WIs
Ashford WI has again cheered our ladies
through the darker days of winter with
its activities. We were treated to a
fascinating talk on the deportation of
women to Australia and the journey to
the new land.
The birthday party was a brilliant
evening with a delicious meal and
entertainment. Our Nutcracker soldier
encouraged people to visit the Christmas
Fair to enjoy the great atmosphere and
contribute to our main fundraising
event of the year. Our usual delivery of
gifts donated and wrapped by our
members for Echelforde Care Home
was well received by the staff and
residents.
Coffee mornings, book club, board
games and knit and natter have
provided extra opportunities for
meetings and friendships. The craft
mornings are proving very popular and
are going from strength to strength.
The new year began with a party with
nibbles and the amusing entertainment
of members trying to match a piece of
information about a member and
everyone trying to create a match.
Eleanor Thomas
Jeremy Bradbear-Hector talked to us in
February about his work as a civil funeral
celebrant, something he took up in
middle age, gaining the necessary
qualifications and starting to practise in
2013.
Our members were not too sure what to
expect from a talk on death and funerals,
but they soon had smiles on their faces,
when Jeremy recounted amusing tales of
the lighter side of his work. He naturally
meets a huge variety of people, some can
be quite difficult, others overcome with
grief... but he handles all situations with
compassion and understanding, bringing
in a little humour where possible.
Jeremy has also officiated at the funerals
of several celebrities, including Gary
Rhodes and Bob Willis.
For all, he has endeavoured to provide a
meaningful ceremony, what is to be the
final act of love and respect for the
deceased.
Margaret Smith
Margaret introduced the speaker Joanne
Dunkley of the Rainbow Trust, a national
charity which support families with
children with life limiting conditions.
The support may include attending
hospital appointments, helping with
childcare, liaising with medical teams,
transport and much more.
And also...
We had a minute’s silence for member
Margaret Chandler, who had been a
member of Iver for 23 years and before
that various roles in Cowley WI. She was
also a valued member of our book group.
At our February meeting we welcomed a
speaker, Mr Barry Dix. His Tales of
London Airport was very interesting. He
once worked for the Airport Press
Agency as a journalist and met quite a
few famous faces. He also spoke about
the early history of the airport and
showed us pictures of the first buildings
early BOAC aircraft. A day later a Whist
Drive was held which was attended by 16
people and which raised £80.
In February Andrew Waite from the
company Festoon presented a talk on
gemstones He talked us through how to
look for and be aware of what we were
buying, and how much we should be
paying for the item. He then went on to
explain where different stones came
from.
Some members brought along their
jewellery for him to assess its
authenticity. There were some surprises!
And even more surprises when Andrew
explained the healing properties of many
of the stones. It was a very interesting
and enjoyable talk. Members then very
quickly moved to the table and lots of
purchases were made.
Andrew has spoken at many WIs; you
can find him in the Speaker Directory
available to officers on SharePoint.

On 7 February, 20 SVWI members
arrived at Denman College for our long-
awaited ‘overnighter’. After pre-dinner
drinks and dinner we enjoyed a
demonstration of Portuguese Tapas
dishes from Ana Dores. We rounded off
the evening in the bar with a couple of
glasses and some lively chatter.
Tai Chi instructor Alan Baker took us
through the history and background to
this pastime, before we experimented
with some moves and meditation.
Willow Weaving classes were taught by
Norah Kennedy, who guided everyone
through making dragonflies and stars.
Lucy Surman steered us through Silver
Clay Jewellery making; we each crafted a
beautiful necklace.

We had a great visit to London to see the
show Waitress – and no, the pies in the
photo weren’t real! We enjoyed a fish
and chip lunch at our AGM when Una
Saunders was re-elected as President.
Our Christmas Party went with a swing
and we had cheese and wine instead of
all bringing a plate.
A group went to Gunnersbury House to
the exhibition of quilts. The museum was
very good and well worth the visit. We
had lunch in the café, where we met
Sarah Wilson of Harlington WI and
Susan James of West Drayton WI!
In January, we were entertained by our
local choir, The Caroliners, and the
following week a large group had lunch
in The Plough at Norwood Green.
Good speakers, a range of outings, fun
and friendship at our meetings gave us a
really successful 2019 with an increase
in membership as well.
Our talks have included Crime
Detection, local history, the 60s, money,
World War music, Trent Park, flower
arranging and Tripe and Trotters!
Outings have included Kensington
Palace, The Globe, the Sky Garden,
Hatfield House, Kathy Brown’s Garden –
and the icing on the cake—Denman! We
N1W1 January meeting was on the theme
of New Year New Start. We had Danielle
and Trudi from the Scandinavian/
Australian brand Kikki.k to run a work
shop for us to encourage us to follow our
dreams. Kikki.k has the aim of inspiring
101 million women to follow their
dreams and make the world a better
place.
Some of our members shared their
dreams and they were very varied from
being a Federation trustee to owning pet
pigs! As part of the workshop the Kikki.k
team gave us all a workbook to help us
continue to work towards achieving our
dreams.
Sally Greenbrook
We looked to some local history for our
February meeting and heard from
Stephanie Muir about the history of
Ealing Studios. We learnt so much about
the early days of the studios, including
the famous Ealing Comedies. Stephanie
talked extensively about how gender was
portrayed in the early Ealing films and
what we can tell about social history from
the films. This was also our first month
supporting the Ealing Baby Bank and we
were thrilled with the contributions our
members donated for families in need in
our community.
This month our walking group headed to
central London for a walk led by Helen
focused loosely around Samuel Pepys
and the Fire of London. The craft group
made green hearts as part of the
#showthelove campaign. And our culture
club took in a matinee performance of
Come From Away, based on the true
story of a small town in Newfoundland
where many planes were forced to land
after the September 11 attacks.
had great fun seeing how many of us
could fit in the Middlesex room!
We have also had an Easter Bonnet
Parade, quizzes, slideshows—using our
Lottery funded equipment—an afternoon
tea and a strawberry tea. Our usual Craft
and Produce show in July showed off the
talents of many of our members. To
round off our year we had our birthday
lunch in October and a Christmas Party
at our December meeting.
Our Institute is doing well and looking
forward to the rest of 2020.

Harlington WI welcomed six new
members and two
visitors at their
February meeting.
Nimble fingers
and lots of
imagination were
needed when
members showed
their care for the
environment by
stitching Green
Heart Lavender
Bags to celebrate Show the Love 2020
Campaign. Using scraps of green
material laid and ironed onto interfacing,
they embroidered by either hand stitches
or machines and made an authentic

encourages children and older people to
keep moving through moderate exercise
and a good diet – fibre, fresh food, fish
and, of course, fruit & veg.
At the age of 80, Diana is still very
active, exercising every morning in the
privacy of her home, rather than on
national TV, and through her charity
work for Breast Cancer Care, Cancer
Research, Age UK and the Royal
Osteoporosis Society, to name a few. For
this she was awarded the British Empire
Medal last year.
Over the years Diana has been a
journalist, an actress, made exercise
videos and written books including Sod
Sitting, Get Moving published in 2019
and more recently Beating Osteoporosis.
Do you remember the 80s? It all came
flooding back to us when Diana Moran,
‘The Green Goddess’ of BBC Breakfast
Time fame, came along to our January
meeting and gave us a snapshot of her
pathway to exercise from childhood to
grandparent. Known as GG (Green
Goddess & Granny Goddess), she

On 6 February 2020, Hillingdon WI had its annual lunch. This year 20 members had a delicious roast dinner at the Arcade Café (‘Granny Satchwills’). Many thanks to Ahmed and his team for a lovely hot meal and plenty of it! Our February meeting included a minute’s silence, for a member who passed away the week before. The President welcomed Lee Abraham who gave a very interesting talk on Kings, Queens and Michelin Men playing cards. Lee bought along some of her collection, we were surprised at the different shapes, sizes, designs and colours from all over the world and also the price people pay for them! To celebrate our 101st Birthday, Christine made some biscuits to enjoy in advance of our big party in March.
Dianne Butler
Stanwell WI President Mary Jeffery
organised a Quiz Night to raise funds
for Spelthorne in Bloom baskets for
Stanwell Village. Mary was helped by
WI friends and the Quiz Master was
Tracey Mercer.
Everyone enjoyed the Quiz and the
Fish and Chip supper the winning
team members were Sarah and Alan
Endersby, Margaret Eggington, Karen
Crawley, Diane Hall, Claire Newman,
Irving and Jill Lord.
After lunch we concluded in the concert
hall, where the Wurlitzer theatre organ
rose up from the floor. A wonderful sight
a sound, it took many of us ‘oldies’ back
to the days of Reginald Dixon at the
organ.
Roy demonstrated all the different
sounds and played Jerusalem. We ended
with the organ descending to the theme
tune of the Saturday morning flicks!
Founded in 1963, the museum has the
largest collection of historic musical rolls
for the self playing instruments. We
recommend it!
On a chilly day 23 members visited the
Musical Museum in Brentford. Our
guide, 90 years young Roy, was a joy to
listen to. He repairs and keeps the
instruments working, and knows the
history of every instrument.
Only a few bags were completed so
members had homework to do to
complete them!
Also at the meeting we welcomed
Christine West from the Therapy and
Day Services Harlington Hospice who
offers classes for patients with
Lymphoedema. She informed us about
Tripudio, a form of movement which
helps relieve this condition. Tripudio can
also be used for general wellbeing, and
she guided us all through a ‘Flow’
routine. It was very accessible for all the
group and we all enjoyed it.

A Cup of Coffee with...
Angela first joined the WI in the
seventies. She is currently Treasurer of
Stanwell WI, is a Denman Ambassador,
and has been on the Board of Trustees
since 2017.
Who would you most like to have a cup of coffee/tea with?
I would love to sit down over a cuppa
with Sandi Toksvig. I have loved
watching her on Bake Off and she is a
brilliant comedian, but she is also a
staunch campaigner for women, co-
founding the Women’s Equality Party in
2015. I think it would be a fascinating
meeting.
What inspired you to join the WI?
I was persuaded to join by a friend—who
is now President of Stanwell WI—when
my children were very young. I was a
member for several years and had a
wonderful time—I think our Social
Committee was the best around!
However, when I returned to work I
found I had less time available so I had a
bit of a break. I returned after a few
years and it was if I had never been
away. It was wonderful to see old friends
and make lots of new ones. It really did
feel like coming home.
Which woman inspired you most?
This is a tricky one. There are so many
women who have done so much to
inspire others. Can I have two?
Top of my list would be my Mum. She
never had a career as such, but when we
were older she worked part-time to help
give us the extras in life. She showed me
the importance of family values and was
always there for us. I still miss her very
much.
My English teacher at Grammar School
was also an inspiration—she introduced
me to some wonderful literature. I also
loved writing and she gave me my first
chance in the school magazine!
The happiest moment you will cherish forever?
The joy of life—the birth of my children
and grandchildren without a doubt.
The piece of wisdom you would pass on to a child?
Follow your heart.
The best biscuit to dunk in tea/coffee?
It’s got to be gingernuts!
The temptation you wish you could resist?
Cheese. If wasn’t for cheese I would be
Vegan!
What is your most treasured possession?
I have a bundle of letters that my Dad
wrote to my Mum whilst he was serving
in the Second World War. They are
written on the old Airmail paper—which
is really thin—and in the tiniest of
writing. They are full of such love.
Whenever I read them I realise how
blessed I was to have had them as
parents and how lucky most of us are not
to have lived through those times.
The person who influenced you most
When I returned to work after having my
children, I thought it would be just part
time, to earn some extra money.
However, my new boss encouraged me to
aim higher and to build a successful
career. He supported me all the way and
the family became our very good friends.
I owe him a lot.
The unending quest that drives you on?
I love to learn and we are on the verge of
unlocking so much information. I only
wish I could live for another hundred
years and find out what’s next, what’s
beyond our galaxy, what is yet to be
invented...
How do you relax?
I couldn’t live without a book, so reading
will always be my ‘go to’ choice when I
want to relax – and I love my e-reader,
especially for holidays.
I also enjoy crafting, I have tried several
crafts over the years and I enjoy spending
a couple of hours with my crochet (I’m
still learning) or sewing.
However, when I’m feeling a bit more
energetic, you can’t beat dancing!!! I
have several medals from my youth, for
ballroom and ballet, but, alas, I no longer
have a partner to join me.

Middlesex Updates
How do you become a Seconder for a
Resolution at the AGM? And what
happens when you do?
The first point is—how are you chosen?
Is it a formal process? In my case no; it
was very informal. A WI friend in
another Federation and someone who
had heard me speak before thought I
could convey urgency of the resolution to
the audience. The request was a no
brainer: would I speak to Second the
resolution to campaign to raise the
profile of Cervical Screening? I said yes
straight away, but really should have
waited because….
On 20 February several members from
across the Federation attended a
designer day at Denman. Members
enjoyed willow weaving and silver clay
jewellery making and we have evidently
got some very talented ladies, as the
pictures show. We had a great day!
You are speaking on behalf of your WI,
so no matter how much you personally
believe in the subject and the stance
taken in the Proposed Resolution; your
WI has to support your advocated
position. So last year when I was asked I
said yes it was pre-emptively; my WI still
had to vote in the final round of voting
before the AGM. Our resolution meeting
was a bit nerve wracking for me as I
waited for the count to come in and of
course I couldn’t influence the members
by explaining my potential role.
Each of the people involved in the
resolution process has strict time limits
to speak. The proposer has three
minutes, the seconder two minutes, and
the expert speakers longer. The expert
speaker is usually the charity the
proposing WI has worked with to
develop the resolution prior to the long
list or once on the short list a charity or
advocacy group approached by NFWI
Public Affairs.
The speech is your speech, based on your
research, but you do have to prepare it in
advance and it is checked over by the PA
Team and Legal and we shared amongst
ourselves to ensure we weren’t
contradicting each other. Finally you
practise in front of a mirror timing
yourself to ensure that at a clear
speaking pace you can give the speech
with in your time limit.
As a Speaker you are a guest of the NFWI
for the day, so we enjoyed a prepared
lunch had a number of photos taken at
key points.
Get baking...
Pat, from Iver WI recently went on a
three day course on baking basics, with
tutor Linda Hewett. It was evidently a
busy few days and she had a wonderful
time, as we can see from Pat’s letter.
Thank you for sharing this with us Pat.
Dear MFWI,
I just want to say thank you again for
the Denman bursary I won last year. I
have just spent 3 super days at Denman
doing a Baking Basics course with a
super tutor, Linda Hewett. I came home
with so much—loaves, buns, scones
apple tart, lemon curd, mayonnaise,
hummus and a pesto. (We ran out of
time for making the sponge!)
I would thoroughly recommend one of
Linda Hewett’s courses. As I usually do,
I enjoyed my stay at Denman and met
lots of nice W.I. ladies.
Many thanks,
Pat Gravette (Iver Evening WI)
