ANNUAL REPORT
2017-18
MESP:DEOGHAR
From The Desk
Over the years, micro finance institutions (MFIs) have been providing small scale loans
and financial services to individuals primarily in rural and semi urban areas that have
traditionally been excluded from the formal financial system due to multiple constraints,
including geographical presence, unavailability of financial history etc.
Despite contributing 47% to India’s GDP, rural India’s share in total credit outstanding is
just 10 percent as of FY 16, indicating very low penetration of banking credit in rural
areas. The govt of India and the RBI have taken several proactive measures including
the introduction of no frill accounts, liberalization of RBI’s branch expansion, hosting of
financial literacy programs, introduction of payment banks and small finance banks to
buttress financial inclusion.
MESP as a NGO- MFI crossed its seven years milestones in this sector. It is also
constantly working in promoting of financial inclusion. Our field officers open accounts
for many borrowers. Ninety percent of our borrowers have bank accounts. We are also
providing credit to our borrowers through NEFT in their account directly. Our field
officers got training from BIRD, Lucknow sponsored by NABARD. It is an achievement
of our organization.
We have become the BC of the Airtel Payment Bank for this Santhal Paragana region.
Through this channel we can expand the financial inclusion program rapidly. We are
making collaboration ESAF Retail Pvt Ltd, Trissur to provide new solar energy to our
borrowers.
Our organization is also working for socio-economic development. We have formed
SHGs in three blocks of our working area for women development and empowerment.
Girls education/drop out and under age marriage are thrust area for women
development. Livelihood promotion of the women members is also our focused area.
This is our seventh Annual Report. Our team members are constantly working for the
development backward people of this region. I convey my thanks to my members. Their
constant effort is the asset of the organization.

OBJECTIVES
Following objectives are guiding force of the organization:
a) MESP wants to cater micro credit and insurance services in the less accessible or no
accessible areas.
b) Facilitate to promote micro enterprises/livelihood in rural, semi-urban and urban areas.
c) Facilitate to access marketing of products produced by the SHG groups.
d) Provide technology and training for capacity building of the poor and marginalized
people;
e) Extension services for agriculture and allied sector activities;
f) Macro and micro level planning for livelihood intervention.
2.0 : Way to livelihood Promotion:
Main focus of our organization is to promote livelihood and enterprises. Farzana Bibi is
a sample case where MESP played a catalytic role to promote her enterprises (as well
as livelihood), which changed the lifestyle of whole family.
FARZANA BIBI : KONKRIBANK: Deoghar
Present situation: Farzana Bibi is a resident of Konkribank village, Deoghar block
living with her husband and four kids. She is a hard working lady. Her husband’s
name is Samser Ansari; he is working in a goods shade as a labor at Jasidih railway
yard. All her kids are studying in a govt. school. She runs a nasta (food) shop in the
Chawk (junction) of Konkribank village. The shop is running well because all the
labors used to come for breakfast in the morning and evening. Her net earnings is
approx Rs. 200/day (appr). She possesses two cows in the home and has been
selling milk to the domestic customers.
Initial Stage: Four years ago, she was not doing any livelihood activities to support
her family. Their entire family depends on her husband’s earning. Certainly he
became ill with physical problems. So she had compelled to do productive work
which would help her to run family.
MESP was nascent during that period and started work in that area .Organisation
wanted to extend its hand to these kind of women for their livelihood promotion.
Farzaana Bibi approached to our Field Officer and , we had enrolled a
JLG on that particular village including Farzana Bibi. She had borrowed first time as
a loan Rs. 10000/- to purchase a cycle van to sell nasta and chart items(fast food)
in that village. She repaid the whole amount and approached for second cycle loan.
Her business had grown. Third time she had borrowed Rs. 15000/- to construct a
temporary hut for shop.
Analysis: Changing life style - There is a radical change in their family lifestyle
and her too. The biggest change is that two children out of four are going to pvt.
School and they have a good home for living. She possess a vehicle for vending,
sending her kids to private school and provide a comfortable life to her family
members. The way, she has been changing the lifestyle of her family is an example
to others. She made herself self employed. She got her confidence and acted
differently from other women. MG-MESP partnership played a catalytic role in this
transformation.
3.0 JOURNEY BY MESP
MESP started its journey on 2010. We have crossed seven yearly milestones in our
journey. The past seven years have been both challenging and rewarding.
Core area of our thematic operation is livelihood and micro enterprise promotion. We
observed that three (3) supports are required to fulfill the objectives. They are:
Micro Credit
Marketing and
Technology
MESP provides these supports.
During our journey, we have realized that sustainable livelihood generation is an
important but an insufficient condition for bettering the lives of the underprivileged. A
person becomes vulnerable during the old age period. To address the situation we have
introduced livelihood plus services. This includes provision of pension and insurance
services. Services will ensure security during the old age of a person.
During the last seven years old journey we are covering two districts Deoghar and
Dumka in the Santhal Paragana region. Blocks are Deoghar & Devipur (Deoghar) and
Jarmundi and Jama ( Dumka). It has its presence in the Joypur block of Bankura
district, W Bengal where we are implementing fisheries project.
Recently we have become the member of VB Net Foundation. It is a network of NGOs
in the Jharkahand state under the leadership of PRADAN. We want to extend our work
at Godda disrtrict for this purpose.
4.0 Achievement in the last Year :
Rural India has witnessed a significant transformation in recent years. With increased
access to finance and rising digital penetration, annual per capita disposable income in
rural India which was INR 33,540 in FY 2015 is set to increase by 4.4 percent to more
than INR 41000 by 2020.
MESP has been contributing towards transforming this rural India.
Our organization has done lot of work in the last year to improve the livelihood standard
of our program participants. We have done a lot of work on tailoring , dairy and fishery
subsector. Microgram gave short term loan to provide micro credit to our participants for
their livelihood improvement. More than 600 families have been provided short term
assistance for their activities. Training was imparted on tailoring at Bargo and Sahara to
the women members and capital for launching their enterprises. Tailoring program was
sponsored by NABARD, Ranchi. Another training program on tailoring has been
conducted by MESP for Deoghar women members in collaboration with R-SETI,
Deoghar.
Apart from this dairy farm, badhi mala manufacturing, grocery, worship materials, sweet
and tiffin shop, tea shop, agriculture and vegetable production, carpentry, goater,
earthen pottery and bangle business are the other areas of livelihood promotion.
Observing the success of tailoring livelihood program, NABARD also sanctioned one
MEDP training program on tailoring at Bargo-Bandhdi area of Jarmundi block.
We are also making tie up with R-SETI at Deoghar for tailoring training for Deoghar
women members. Twenty two (22) women have been selected for the training purpose.
MESP is also providing different financial services like insurance (life, cattle and health
insurance) and pension services. We are calling it livelihood plus services.
From our experience we observed that persons are becoming vulnerable after 50 years
in the rural areas. After that they need livelihood support services.
MESP has made collaboration with LIC Bhagalpur for micro insurance purpose. We are
providing micro insurance to our borrower. They will get 17-18000 after maturity (7
years). Their premium is very low which Rs 210 is to 250 /month depending on the age.
It is a forced saving which will give a corpus to the women entrepreneurs in future.
4.1 Collaboration with Airtel Payment bank
MESP made collaboration with Airtel Payment bank and engaged as a Business
Correspondent by the Bank. We have appointed another four sub agents who will open
bank a/c and give payment to the customers. It has extended our program.
4.2 Other services
Now we are providing group insurance services to all our borrowers and for their
spouses. This will protect their loan component for any accident. We have made tie up
with LIC –Jamshedpur for this purpose.
5.0 Description of Livelihood Activities
5.1 Tailoring:
This project has been implemented by the organization at Basukinath & its surrounding
villages for promoting 20 enterprises based on tailoring cluster development. The
project was sanctioned by NABARD, Ranchi. This was an innovative project. The output
of the project was narrated in the following:
Objective
Aim of the above mentioned project was to promote 20 women entrepreneurs
through tailoring cluster development in the Jarmundi- Basukinath-Sahara area.
Situational Analysis
Organisation has promoted 27 entrepreneurs through this project and disbursed
2.82 lakhs loan.Out of this 27, 7 is start up venture. Women entrepreneur joins with
her partner in 8 cases, where they can value add with the existing enterprises. They
join with their male counterpart after getting the training in 6 cases. In one case
member joins with her daughter and in another case, member joins with her In-law.
In 5 cases members increase their skill along with their income. We are providing
second time loan in four cases, and will provide another two in the next month.
Sonika Kumari: Bargo: A dwarf girl increased her income from 3000/month to 7000
at present. She is imparting training to other girls also. She contributed a good share
of expenditure to her family.
Sunita Kumari: Chandanpahari : She is also enhancing her skill after training. She has
a shop beside the Deoghar-Dumka road at Sahara. She is earning Rs 6000-
8000/month after training. Her skill is very good as a result finishing of ladies
garment has a high demand. She has two small kids.
Macro context : As the rural economy grows, demand for ladies garments are
growing. Rural ladies are earning money from different activities generated by them.
One of the reason is MFI companies who are giving micro credit to the rural women
entrepreneurs for their small household activity.
Personal need is value added by the fashion sought by the young ladies. It is
basically generated through TV and other Medias. This phenomenon increases the
high value demand for ladies garment.
Learnings: Our approach was to introduce technology to young women
entrepreneurs and make them self dependent. Initially organization wants to impart
training and then escorting the young entrepreneurs through micro credit and
marketing services. We have organized two trainings at Sahara and Bargo involving
45 women members. The training created a willingness among the women members
to do something; a positive environment. Training and escorting created self
confidence among the women members. Some members do alone and some others
value add their own family business.
This kind of training and escorting in the rural areas will generate small start up
activities which make the women members self dependent.

5.2 Bari Manufacturing
MESP has made a successful intervention at Bari (food item) manufacturing industry at
Rohini of Deoghar . A group of SHG members have been manufacturing Bari for several
years. But they were suffering from short of capital and their technology was manual.
Collaborating with NABARD Ranchi we had introduced grinding machine and drying
machines in the bari manufacturing sector. These machines have increased their
production and subsequently income. It also reduces the time of grinding.
A new SHG group at Rohini is interested to manufacture bari and sell it to the market by
their male counterpart. Group was motivated by our staff members. They were
imparting training from our old bari manufacturer. Two members of the group are ready
to borrow loan for grinding machine. Other members will manufacture the bari and dry it.
Dry bari will be packaged and branded by the group. Finished product will be sold by
the male counter part. The process will start very shortly.
Traditional technology for grinding
New technology for grinding
Value addition: MESP has been adding value to bari activity. It facilitate to package the
product, branding and labeling . MESP tries to make linkage with the shopping mall for
marketing the produces.
5.3 Dairy promotion at Deoghar and Jarmundi:
Dairy is one of the main activities in our region. It is a capital intensive business. The
value of a good variety of jersey cow is 40-50000/cow. Rearing of cows requires
expertise. Only few communities have that expertise.
There is a good demand for milk in the region as Deoghar peda is very famous and
popular among the tourists and pilgrims. We are promoting village wise clusters for
dairy promotion. Each small dairy unit absorbs at least two household labours. This
activity is creating household employment. Insurance service is a bottleneck for
promoting this activity in this area. It is not available in the area. Only New India
Insuarnce (Insurance company) is providing the service. But they don’t reach to the
village level and service is also poor.
MESP facilitated to promote Chittolodiya, Manikpur, Chotanaukhil (Deoghar) Jarmundi,
Kalakurn, Domnadih (Jarmundi block) villages as dairy clusters in our working area.
There are on an average fifteen farmers doing this activity in each village. Brief profiles
of few entrepreneurs:
Kalakund village at Jarmundi is a dairy dominated village. Most of the households are
engaged in the dairy activities. Basukinath market is close to this village. So everybody
sells the milk in the basukinath market.
Sumiya Devi: Age-52, Village- Khalakund . Sumiya Devi lives in Kalhakund village of
Jarmundi block of Dumka district. She is engaged in dairy activity for the last 8-9 years.
She is looking after the cows and sells the milk in the Basukinath market. She is living
with her two sons , and their in-laws and grandsons. Two sons are working in the
Basukinath market.
Sumiya Devi is a hard working lady. Her husband died few years back. Her kids were
younger that time. She started cow rearing for running the family from that time. She
had only one cow during that period. Her earning was less than Rs 100 per day from
selling milk.
MESP was working at that area during that period. She approached to the organization
along with other four women. All the women are engaged in the dairy activity. She
borrowed Rs 8000 for the first time. She bought a cow and total milk production went up
to 5 ltrs a day.
After repaying the loan she approached for second loan and subsequently for third and
fourth time. With enhancement in production and productivity, income has also
increased.
She did not have good shed for the protection of cows. She discussed it with our field
officers asked for loan of Rs 20000. MESP sanctioned Rs 18000. She made a good
shed for cows in her house. She invested Rs 28000 for construction of the shed. Now
her cows are safe.
Change : Presently, she is running a good dairy with 9 cows in her possession and the
total milk production is about 20-22 ltrs per day. Daily income is Rs 700-800. She is also
earning Rs 200 from agriculture by selling vegetables. Milk is marketed by herself.
Impact : She constructed one room concrete for his son. Her son established a cloth
shop in the Jarmundi market taking capital from her. All together family income has
gone up. Her grand sons are going to private schools for education.
Her family income has been changing gradually.
Sumiya Devi: dairy business Murta Devi in her dairy
Murta Devi: Age : 50, Husband : Shibsahnkar Yadav, vill: Jarmudi market area.
She is residing at Jarmundi bazaar with her husband and four kids. She and her spouse
both are involved in the dairy business as a means of their livelihood. She is looking
after the animals and her husband is going to market for selling the products (milk &
curd). They are hard working couple.
Earlier stage
Earlier they have only two cows and the total milk production was 4 ltrs a day. The
demand for milk was high as there was no dairy farm in the Jarmundi bazaar area. But
due to lack of capital they did not increase their number of cows.
Change over the years : She came to touch with MESP field officer because her dairy is
located near the MESP office. She approached us for capital as loan to buy cow. We
gave her Rs 10000/ in the first cycle. She sold one her cow to add money over the
amount. Adding that money she bought another good cow. After that her income
increased by 100 per day.
After repaying the first one she wanted to borrow another loan of Rs 12000. She bought
a buffalo with adding money over the existing one. The milk production went upto 6-7
ltrs per day. Apart from selling milk , she also started preparing curd and sell it to the
local market. Her two children started to go nearby school. She also constructed a
shade for their cows. Her monthly income went upto Rs 10000/month. After two years
she had approached to us for a fresh loan and accessed it. She bought a new cow ,as a
result, productivity and income had gone up. Presently, she possesses 3 cows and 2
buffaloes in her shade.
Present lifestyle : At present the lifestyle of the family is totally different from the past.
All her four daughters are going to school. She constructed a toilet in her house
premises. She also bought two goats. Her curd business is going well. Now the monthly
income is 15-17000 (appr). They have electricity, mobile and toilet. Here lies relevance
of MG-MESP collaboration. Murta Devi made an impact on the local resident.
5.4 Micro credit Activity :
MESP is focusing on Livelihood Finance. After identifying the cluster it is providing
credit to the local entrepreneurs. Presently, we are working in the 70 villages. Our mode
of delivery is through JLG or SHG. Especially, we are promoting the micro enterprises
on cluster basis : like badhi mala, carpentry, earthen pottery, dairy, goatery, tailoring
etc. In this respect, micro credit is one of the main factor which required to the
entrepreneurs. In the last year we provided Rs 80 lakhs to these entrepreneurs.
Our achievement in the last year :
Formation of SHG : 40
Formation of JLG : 92
No of Villages covered: 32
Loan Disbursed FY 2016-17 : 80 lakhs
Loan outstanding FY 2016-17 : 54 lakhs
No of enterprise promoted : 110 Data as on 31.3.17
5.5 Badhi-mala Cluster promotion:
Hatnanga is a village at Jarmundi block. Around 12-13 families are engaged in badhi-
mala assembling business in this village. It is a worship material which is sold in the
Srawani Mela in a large scale. All pilgrims visiting in the Basukinath mela are used to
purchase it. Women members are assembling it in the homes and male members are
selling it in the mela. It is fetching a good amount of revenue to the entrepreneurs.
MESP has been supporting these families by providing micro-credit to purchase initial
raw materials. Initially they were taking loan from trader @5-6% interest per month.
After accessing the credit from MESP, the activity has been scaling up and
entrepreneurs are earning profit.
Rumta Devi. Age-42, village –Hatnanga, Spouse name-Jayram Mandal.
She is living in Hatnanga village of Jarmundi block. The family has total 9 members and
her husband is a farmer. She is also engaged in badhi-mala manufacturing for the last
6-7 years. She and her daughter-in-law assembled badhi-mala in their house and sell
them to the Basukinath market.
Past Condition:
Basukinath is a holy place. Famous lord Shiva temple is located here. Tens of lakhs of
pilgrims used to visit this place every year especially in the Srawan (July-August
month). Badhi mala is being sold during this period in a large scale. Rumta devi
manufactured the item in the home and her husband sell it in the fair. Their stock was
not enough due to the lack of fund. They used to borrow a small amount at 5-10%
interest rate in a month. Her daily income was Rs 100-150 in the earlier.
She came into touch with the MESP. She visited our office at Jarmundi. She
approached us for a loan of Rs 10000.00. After accessing the loan he bought
rawmaterials in a large quantity and manufacture different items in a reasonable
amount. During year before the last (2016) she earned a good amount of profit by
selling this product. She repaid all her loan within four months.
Growing gradually:
She had been increasing her stock gradually. Organisation sanctioned another loan
after approaching by her. Her daughter-in-law also helped her for manufacturing the
product. Her income went up around 2 times during the last Srawani mela. She
understood the preference of the pilgrims and tries to supply as per their demand. Her
strategy was right and earned a good profit out of it. She has earned Rs 30000/ from the
last Sravani mela. Her husband engaged in vegetable production and sells it local
Hatiya. Before the Srawani she hired a woman from her neighborhood to help her.
Presently livelihood of the family is going well.
Badhi mala training Daughter-in-law of Rumta Devi
5.6 Marketing and Value Addition:
One of the core area of our organization is marketing and value addition of the product.
Our experience shows that SHG members and farmers are facing hurdles to sell their
produces. Price of the agricultural produces is becoming low during the harvesting
season. We are constantly working on that issue. MESP became a member of VB(Vikas
Bazar) Net Foundation based at Ranchi. Objective of this organization is to access the
marketing related information to the farmers. Members of the VB Net have visited our
field and expressed satisfaction.
5.7 Pisciculture program at Bankura :
The organization has been working on natural resource management for the last five
years. It has brought 15 acres of water bodies under fisheries activity. Aim is to promote
technology promotion and value chain development of the produces. The focus is on
better utilization of water bodies for commercial production. Profit is distributed among
the local community who are involved with this program. Program has been expanding
in the last couple of years.
6.0 : HEALTH ACTIVITIES
MESP has become a member of SRHR alliance, Jharkhand heading by NEEDS a NGO
of reputation. Objective of the alliance is to create awareness about sexual and
reproductive health of the adolescent girls and boys. Another objective is to stop the
child marriage held in this area. We are discussing the issues during the SHG & JLG
meeting. It is creating impact on families. Eight-ten families have stop their child
marriage from their own.
We are also working with the White Ribbon Alliance (WRA). Objective is to reduce the
maternal and child death during the pregnancy. We undertook campaign among the
mothers at Jarmundi and Deoghar (block) area in collaboration with WRA. We have
also participated in the state level and regional level workshop organized by WRA.
7.0 FINANCIAL INCLUSION
BC Model: One of the objectives of this model is to extend the coverage of financial
inclusion program. We became a BC of the Airtel payment bank. We have appointed
four agents to fulfill the objective. MESP is attracting the CSP (customer service
providers) to act as an agent of our BC. Three (3) CSP holders are agreed to do the
work. They are making good work in this regard.
Insurance is an important service which should be reached to every household. Rural
poor are deprived of the insurance facility. Jan Dhan Yojona scheme is also providing
term insurance & accidental insurance benefit those having bank a/c. But there are
persons who do not have either a/c or any insurance scheme. We are extending our
hand providing different kind of insurance services those are still deprive of this facility.
7.1 Opening Bank A/C
Our field officers are trying to facilitate to open a/c to our borrowers. They fill the form
and introduce customers into the branches. Our field officer opened 82 a/cs in Jarmundi
block and 65 at Deoghar and Devipur block. Eighty percent of our borrowers have their
bank a/c. We are also paying loan through the NEFT/RTGS mode to each of the
borrower’s a/c. This is our achievement heading towards cashless society.
7.2 Insurance Program:
7.3.1 Micro Insurance under LIC: Organization has made collaboration with LIC,
Bhagalpur for introducing micro insurance (MI) to our borrowers. MI policy is an
endowment policy with Rs 1200-1400 premium annually focusing low income group
people. The response of this scheme is very good from our borrowers. Forty (40)
women members have been covered under this insurance scheme.
7.3.2 Group Insurance: We have discussed earlier that dairy is a very potential
household industry in this area but insurance is a bottleneck for promoting this activity.
National Insurance Company is providing this services but it does not reach to the grass
root level. To bridge this gap and to promote dairy activity we are collaborating with
Advance India Insurance Broker Services Ltd based at Gurgaon for cattle insurance
service. Two companies came forward for providing this service. After implementation of
the service, dairy industry will expand in this area in future.
7.3.3 Health Insurance: Cost of medical services will go up day by day. Poor people
are unable to pay the amount. Women have been suffering much. Govt hospital service
is also poor. To bridge this gap of services we are collaborating with Advance India
Insurance Service for providing medical insurance to our rural masses. Two insurance
companies are ready catering this service.
8.0 SHG Promotion Program:
Though we are mainly working through JLG mode, but we are also focusing SHG too.
We have formed 50 SHGs in Deoghar, Devipur and Jarmundi block. SHG is permanent
in nature but JLG is a working group. We want to percolate social issues like literacy
program, under age marriage, women education etc. through SHG. Insurance and
pension program is also percolating through SHG. We are promoting SHGs for women
empowerment apart from our livelihood and micro promotion activities.
Literacy through Signature: Our field officers also taught signature to illiterate borrowers.
It is important for opening the account. More than 100 women had been taught
signature during field work by our field officers.
9.0 VISIT:
DDM, Dumka has visited our field several times at Jarmundi . Mr Amitava Biswas from
NABARD RO also met our program participants at Jarmundi. They expressed their
satisfaction
Mr Krishnamurthy of Microgram has visited our field. He went to Bandhdih, Banwara
villages of Jarmundi block. He met our tailoring participants in the Jarmundi block. We
