Yahoo Job Cuts Yahoo is expected to cut up to 700jobs before the end of the year, which represents about 5 per centof the company’s workforce. Thecuts will mark Yahoo's fourth masslayoff in the past three years andform part of the latest attempt bychief executive Carol Bartz toreduce costs, said the FinancialTimes. Most of the cuts areexpected in Yahoo’s US productgroups as the firm focuses on newmarkets with the greatest potentialfor growth. Yahoo’s revenue hasgrown less than two per cent to$4.8bn in the first nine months ofthe year, compared with Google'srevenue growth of 23 per cent tonearly $21bn in the same period. The firm’s difficulties have spurredspeculation that buyout firmsmight put together a takeover bidfor Yahoo, possibly in partnershipwith AOL. Hard disk innovationHitachi has unveiled a threeterabyte (3TB) hard drive that canbe used even on 32-bit Windows XPsystems, breaking the 2.2TB limitimposed by legacy firmware anddisk partition specifications.Hitachi’s Deskstar 7K3000 is a firstfrom the company to deliver thiscapacity and 7,200 RPMperformance in a standard 3.5informat (that’s for desktop PCs).Hitachi said it provides a softwaredriver that allows the 3TB Deskstarto be accessed as a single volume, even with 32-bit systems such asthe majority of PCs currentlyrunning Windows XP. PCs fitted withthe old-fashioned Bios firmware willstill not be able to boot from a 3TBvolume, meaning the Deskstar willhave to be fitted as a secondarydisk. This applies to all 32-bitWindows XP systems, but could alsoaffect PCs with Windows Vista andWindows 7, Hitachi warned. Potentialbuyers are advised to check thecompatibility guide on Hitachi’swebsite. Mac OS X and Linux usersface no such restrictions.
WikiLeaks Hacker ArrestedDutch police have arrested ateenager suspected of involvementin the Operation Payback distributeddenial-of-service (DDoS) attacksfollowing the latest WikiLeaksrevelations. The Dutch High TechCrime Unit said that a 16 year-oldboy was arrested “presumablyinvolved in the digital attacks bysympathisers of WikiLeaks toinclude the websites of MasterCardand PayPal”. An investigation waslaunched as soon as Dutch policerealised that the attacks originatedin The Netherlands. The teenagerhas confessed to attackingMasterCard and Visa but, given thedistributed nature of the attacks, itis unlikely that he had much morethan a minor role. “The boy isprobably part of a larger group ofhackers, to which the investigationcontinues,” said the Dutch High TechCrime Unit. Research from securityfirm Imperva has revealed that thetool used to create the voluntarybotnet, which has been launchingthe denial of service attacks on theaforementioned sites has beendownloaded over 40,000 times.

W e all start out in Decemberwith good intentions. Butthen life – snow, Christmas
parties, school fairs and everythingelse – gets in the way and asurprising number of us reach theChristmas week with everything leftto do. If you have left it all until thelast minute, don’t despair – we’rehere to help. So get out your creditcards, and brace yourself...
Gifts for the tableIf you’re in a hurry, it’s agood idea to buy everyonesomething from within onetheme. That way, you cangenerally get most of yourpresents at one or twostores or websites, savingplenty of time.
Food and drink areperfect Christmas gifts.Obviously it helps if youknow your host or recipientwell enough to know theirtaste or requirements. Butas a general rule, a goodbottle (or two) of wine isusually a welcome gift.Paired with a couple oflovely wine glasses, thegift becomes morepersonal. If you don’t mindsplashing some cash, then hampers are a great gift forcouples, gastronomes and families. All the department stores seem todo some sort of hamper selection
now and most offer online orderingup until 22 or 23 December(although the later you leave it, themore it costs). We like John Lewis’large retro sweeties hamper, £30(www.johnlewis.com). If you wantto personalise a hamper or you’reon a budget, them make oneyourselfl; simply buy a basket andsome tissue, and fill it with goodies.
Gifts for the homeFlowers and plants are easy last-minute pleasers: a beautiful pottedorchid, miniature bay or olive tree, ora set of growing herbs are all greatgifts. Scented candles are good too – we love Geodesis Rose or Lavenderfor the ladies, and for the man inyour life, choose Votivo’s ‘Teak’ orTrue Grace’s ‘Sacristy’, which bothhave woody, masculine scents (from £17.95, www.candles.co.uk).
Gifts for the heartEverybody loves a game atChristmas. Scrabble, Pass the Pigs,Pictionary... most of us could dowith an updated Trivial Pursuits set,
too. For some old-fashioned fun, choose Mah Jong, Backgammonor Chess. For something a bit different, try table ping pong (£9, John Lewis), GiantJenga or the rather messy butfun Rapidough.
And of course, the gift that no-one will object to is a charity gift. We wholeheartedly supportinitiatives like Oxfam Unwrapped(www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/oxfam-unwrapped). We’ve bought severalgoats and a toilet over the last fewyears, and now everyone is doing it.Charities like the Samaritans,Sightsavers International, the RSPCAand the RSPB – there’s a good deedgift for everyone. And knowingyou’ve made a difference? Well, maybe that’s the very best gift of all.
However late you leave your shopping,Latest Interiors finds festive gifts thatwill go down a hit

Q. How else could I manage the needsof my business?A. You could give employees the optionto work from home when extremeweather conditions prevent them fromgetting to work if they have access toa computer that allows this.Q. What other options are available?A. You could allow employees to takethe days off as part of their annualleave or pay them but expect them to make up the time at a later date.Q. Should I be taking any steps now to prevent chaos when badweather hits?A. It would be sensible to introduce abad weather policy or amend yourexisting absence management policy to cover such instances. Any change to an existing policyshould be communicated to all staff. You should put in place a procedurefor employees to notify an appropriateperson by a certain time if they haveany problems getting into work. To
Sue Deane is an EmploymentExecutive and deals with allaspects of employment law andemployee relations. Sue regularlyrepresents the firm at conferencesand seminars in order to keepahead in this rapidly expandingarea of law. She has been aMagistrate for 20 years.
Q. The recurrent recent episodes of bad weather are very disruptiveand have been causing operationaldifficulties in the office. Whatpolicy should I adopt regardingabsence management and what are my legal obligations?A. Employees are obliged to attendwork in terms of their contracts ofemployment, even in extremeweather conditions.Q. Do I have to pay an employee whodoes not make it into work becausethey are “snowed in” or becausepublic transport has been cancelleddue to the weather?A. You would be within your rights notto pay an absent employee but youshould assess whether this would bein the interests of your business. Itmay be that the financial burden ofpaying staff in these circumstances isoutweighed by the benefits that sucha gesture would have on staff moraleand productivity in the long run.
avoid any doubt, you should statewhether employees will be paid for thedays they are unable to get into workbecause of the weather, rather thanrisk giving them a nasty surprisewhen they receive their payslip!Q. Should I make it clear thatemployees are expected to makereasonable efforts to get into work, for example, using alternativetravel arrangements?A. Yes, but employees should not feelpressured to risk their health andsafety to get into the office. Any policyshould be as fair as possible.Q. What steps can I take if I suspectthat an employee is using the badweather as an excuse for not cominginto work?A. If you have reason to believe thatthis may the case, you should makethe employee aware that disciplinaryaction may be taken if they aresuspected of using the bad weather as an excuse for not attending work.
