Gold Leaf Award
I recently fulfilled one of my duties as the current president of MNDAKSPAN,
which was to complete and submit the Gold Leaf Application to ASPAN National
Office post-marked by Feb 1st, 2013. Two years ago, I kept hearing people talk
about the Gold Leaf Award and had absolutely no clue what they were talking
about. Well, let me tell you, now I know! It was an honor and privilege to reflect
back on the year of 2012 for our component and see how MNDAKSPAN members
are progressively working on becoming a stronger component.

The Gold Leaf application consists of 34 questions that address a wide range of topics,
such as: component goals and strategic plans, policies and procedures, welcoming
members, newsletter content, educational opportunities, scholarships, and community
service projects, involvement of component members at the national level, publications
and research. For a more extensive look at content and questions you can view the Gold
Leaf application and questions on the ASPAN website at www.aspan.org. A Component
may receive this award only once every three years. The winner of Gold Leaf Compo-
nent of the Year is determined by the cumulative total of points earned.
The purpose of the Gold Leaf Award is:

tion, education services and community relations; to encourage quality component management; to recognize with distinction and visibility the efforts and re-
sults of meaningful activities that build a strong component; to benchmark standards. The component awarded the 2012 Gold Leaf Component of the
year receives:

Conference in Chicago, IL. Recognition in Breathline and the Journal of PeriAnesthesia
Nursing. A book or publication on perianesthesia nursing of the Com-
ponent’s choice, for use by the Component for member benefits
or recruitment efforts. Ribbons for all Component Members at National Conference signifying their membership in
the Component of the Year. 1 In order for your component to be eligible your component must:

Although, MNDAKSPAN has yet to receive this award, I think it is clearly within our reach
and it is my hope that we will continue to
strive to become a component of strong
leader ship with increased member support,
excel in communicating and meeting the
needs of our members, support and reach
out to our communities, and have an in-
creased focus on evidence based practice
and the research going on in and around
our specialty of perianesthesia nursing
within our component. I believe with the continued support of our members that our compo-
nent, MNDAKSPAN, will one day become the recipient of the Gold Leaf Award.
If there is anyone who would like to talk with me personally about our Gold Leaf Application
and content submitted to the National office or how MNDAKSPAN can better serve their
members, please email me at [email protected].
Blessings,
Karissa M Brinkman, RN, BSN

Congratulations to our newly certified CPANS and CAPAS. This is a wonderful professional and
personal accomplishment. In their recent newsletter ABPANC announced that upon completion of
the spring examination period they have certified over 10,000 CPAN and CAPA nurses. The organi-
zation currently has 6,250 CPANS, 3,934 CAPAS and over 460 nurses who are dually certified. In
our three state area (Minnesota and the Dakotas) we have approximately 65 CAPAS, 108 CPANS
and 11 who are dually certified. This is as of December with the fall testing results just out.
The spring registration online is January 14-March 11. The Examination window is April 16-May18.
All of this information is available to you on the ABPANC web site. Feel free to e-mail me if you
have any further questions. After passing the test (and I know you will) you will need to recertify
every three years. There are many different activities that will count towards recertification other
than conferences and books. These may include things like hospital committees, precepting new
staff or organizing charitable activities. You can keep track of your recertification activities on a con-
tinual learning log on the same ABPANC website. I have recertified several times and find this sys-
tem easy to use. I would love to hear any study or exam tips, materials you have used, what helped
and what did not so I can pass the information on to others. Feel free to e-mail me or come see
me at the certification table at our spring conference in Bloomington.
