INTRODUCTION
LET’S CHANGE LIVES!
Thank you for participating in The Fellowship’s Chai Challenge.
Together, we will make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
The Chai Challenge is The Fellowship’s global
outreach to feed, clothe, and provide medical care
for more than 20,000 of Israel’s most vulnerable
people.
This one-of-a-kind fundraising event has been
designed for you to make it your own.
Sign up as an individual or form a team, and invite
family and friends to join with you and support your
efforts.
We encourage youth groups or ministry groups to
set up multiple teams for competition. Raise funds
online and offline as suggested below.
The Chai Challenge Celebration
Celebrate the difference you have made at your
team’s Chai Challenge Celebration (March 2nd,
2018)!
We’ve chosen the joyous festival of Purim on March
2nd, 2018 to collectively celebrate our Chai
Challenge achievements across the country. We
encourage you to organize your own festive
celebration with your church, school, family or
workplace teams on Purim, or close to March 2nd.
Your Team Captain will keep you informed on what
is happening for the Chai Challenge Celebration.

THE CHAI CHALLENGE

Why CHAI (18)?
Judaism is a religion that emphasizes the importance of life,
and Chai - pronounced like “hi” - is the Hebrew word that
means “life.” It consists of two letters in the Hebrew alphabet:
Het and Yud.
Each letter has a numeric value. Het has a value of 8, and Yud
a value of 10, and, of course, 8+10=18.
So, 18 is a number in Judaism that carries great meaning.
Gifts for special occasions, or gifts to charity, are often given
in multiples of 18.
Symbolically, giving these gifts may be referred to as “giving a
gift of life.”
Chai is also the root for a famous Hebrew toast that you’ve
probably heard: L’Chaim – “To Life!”
Our Focus
Together, we are aiming to help Israelis who are struggling and living
below the poverty line with the following initiatives:
Distributing backpacks with school supplies and clothing
cards for children who need clothes for school
Helping Israeli youth with after school learning programs as
well as being able to participate in neighbourhood soccer
Providing heating and food cards for families who cannot
afford to put food on the table

THE NEED...
1) Clothing Cards, Backpacks and More!
Over 1.7 million Israelis live below the poverty line. And
almost a quarter of these are children!
For families who face the daily struggle to make ends
meet, items like new clothes, backpacks, school supplies,
and sport activities are considered “luxury items”.
You can change all this by setting a Chai Challenge goal
to raise funds and save lives.
Join us in raising vital funds for clothing cards and backpacks
filled with school supplies to children in need throughout the
Holy Land.
2) Youth Activities
Unfortunately, many children in Israel don’t have the
opportunity to join a soccer club or receive after-school
tutoring. The Fellowship needs your help to close the
poverty gap faced by youth and children in the Holy Land.
We have partnered with local neighbourhood soccer
leagues to provide tuition for children living in poverty so
they too can participate equally with their friends. This
program engages kids from all backgrounds and faith in
afterschool learning and play.
Join us in this special opportunity to spread optimism and
hope to Israel's youth!
3) Food Cards Over 22% of the population in Israel have little to no food
in their pantry. Many single mothers must forgo their daily
meal in order to feed their young children. We need your
help to alleviate this burden and provide the gift of food
cards and pantry boxes for families struggling to put food
on the table.

FUNDRAISING
Why Do We Fundraise?
Isaiah gave us a calling: to feed the hungry, clothe
the naked, and not to avert our eyes from our flesh
and blood.
Right now, there are thousands of Jewish children and families living in shocking poverty – unable to afford essential necessities like food, medical
assistance, and compassionate care.
With your support, we’ll be able to meet the
immediate needs of so many, and fill the significant
gap in Israel’s ability to care for its poorest citizens.
What Will Your Chai Challenge Be?
What will you do to make a difference?
What will your youth group, school, or ministry
team do together to change lives?
Check out ideas on the next page for the Chai
Challenge—ideas for all skill levels. Let your dedication to Israel and her people reflect the
activity you choose.
Some activities can be done individually and others can be done with friends (a team), family, and work
colleagues. The more you can get involved to help children and youth in need, the more help you are providing!
“Whoever is kind to the poor
lends to the LORD, and He
will reward them for what
they have done.”

To provide food, clothing, and medical care for 20,000 Israelis in need, we’ll need more
compassionate and faithful people like you involved.
Fortunately, your Participant Centre gives you lots of easy and effective ways to spread the
word about the Chai Challenge:
1. Send Emails
In your Participant Centre, you can import all of your email contacts and easily send them a
customized email or use one of our handy email templates.
2. Post on Social Media
Your Participant Centre allows you to post to Facebook and Twitter so your friends and
followers can see the amazing progress you’re making. If you’re on Snapchat, Instagram, or
any other social media channels, be sure to let your friends know about your Chai Challenge
through social media!
3. Face-to-Face
This last option isn’t in your Participant Centre, but it’s definitely one of the best ways to
spread the word about your Chai Challenge. When you’re asking for larger contributions,
you’re more likely to succeed when meeting in person.

Take advantage of these tried-and-tested fundraising tips to make the
biggest impact for those in need.
1. Make a personal donation
When asking others for their financial support, it’s important to lead by example. Start the
Chai Challenge off by making a personal donation yourself. Taking the lead shows your
passion for the cause, but also sets the bar for future donations as many donors will try to
match your initial donation. Be sure to set the bar high!
2. Personalize your page
We mentioned this tip earlier, but it’s so important that we’re mentioning it here again!
Writing why you joined the Chai Challenge doesn’t take long and can make a big
difference in your fundraising potential. Be sure to update your personal page today!
3. Share your page
If this is your first time fundraising, asking for donations may not come naturally. But
remember that by asking and spreading the word about your Chai Challenge, you’re
giving your friends, family, and colleagues the opportunity to make a difference for people
living in desperate need. That is something they can feel good about doing. Share your
story today!
4. Ask your employer if they have a matching gift program
Some companies have a matching gift program that will match funds you raise for people
in need. Be sure to reach out to your employers to see if they have a program like this
that you can take advantage of to double your impact for Israel’s people.
5. Use technology
From social media, to blogs, to texts, to your email signature, and everything in between—
consider how you can use technology to get the word out about the Chai Challenge.
6. Tell your story as-it-happens
Keeping people engaged in your progress is a great way to involve those who have
donated, and those who have yet to. Be sure to share updates via social media or email to
all your supporters through text, photo, or video so that you can inspire them with your
devotion to helping people in need.
7. Ask, Ask, ASK!
It’s the only way to get donations and get closer to making a difference. It seems simple,
but a lot of people have trouble simply asking for donations. And we understand why you
might feel that way. But remember, at the end of the day, you’re giving people the
opportunity to feel good about themselves by donating, and also provide urgent care for
poor families.
FUNDRAISING TIPS

FUNDRAISING TIPS
8. Send a friendly reminder
When you send your first set of emails or social media posts, not everyone on your contact
list will respond. And that’s normal. People are busy and may not see your message, or
some will see it and forget it. Don’t be afraid to follow up with those who haven’t
responded or those who said they would make a donation but haven’t yet.
Send reminders every now and then about the urgent need in Israel and around the world,
and how easy it is to donate online, but be careful not to send so many messages that
you’re flagged as spam!
9. Raise your goal
As soon as you’re about to reach your goal, raise it up even higher. People are more likely
to donate, and donate more, the farther away you are from your goal. And of course, the
more your raise, the more food, clothing, and medical care we can provide for struggling
people.
10. Show your gratitude
Whether it’s one dollar or one thousand dollars, saying “thank you” to your supporters
matters. A “thank you” email or a phone call can go a long way, and if you really want to
show your gratitude, consider giving supporters a shout out on social media. If you have
supporters who have made larger-than-average donations, consider meeting them in
person or sending them a thoughtful card in the mail.
11. Use your tools
We’ve provided you with an Offline Donation Form to help you keep track of donations
you’re collecting from your Chai Challenge. Print and cut up the Donation Slips so that
your donors know how to contact you. Be sure to follow up with your donors and send the
funds in as soon as possible to be sure it counts towards your fundraising total.
