Successul requirements management
The IBM Rational® team has been
helping customers over the course o
more than 20 years to successully
build and deploy sotware applica-
tions. Time and again during these
engagements, requirements manage
ment was exposed as a key process
area or ensuring project success.
The better you communicate and
manage your requirements, the bette
chance your projects have or deliver
ing the right solution on time and
within budget—and eective require
ments management is the specialty o
the IBM Rational RequisitePro® solutio

Capturing and communicating
requirements
In any eective requirements man-
agement process, recording the
requirements that have been discov-
ered during elicitation is a key step.
This helps ensure accurate com-
munication and management o
the requirements as they evolve.
Documents are a natural ormat or
recording requirements, because they
reely provide space or establishing
context or or oering supplementary
requirements inormation.
The IBM Rational RequisitePro solution
leverages users’ licensed copies o
the amiliar Microsot® Word tool to
ease requirements capture. Docu-ments, though useul or requirements
capture, are not an optimal environ-
ment or prioritizing and organizing
inormation—activities that are best
perormed using a separately licensed,
supported database. By linking require-
ment documents to a database, the
Rational RequisitePro product marries
the best o both worlds.
This unique architecture leverages the
power o a database and the reedom
o the Microsot Word application or
more eective requirements manage-
ment. Documents in IBM Rational
RequisitePro ormat are not simply
input to or output rom a require-
ments database. They contain live
requirements, allowing you to remain
in a amiliar Microsot Word environ-
ment to modiy requirements. The
requirements in Word documents
are dynamically linked to additional
requirements inormation stored
in a database. The database and
documents are connected such that
a simple double-click on the require-
ment will launch users’ Microsot Word
application and take them directly to
that requirement in the context o how
it was written in the document.
The Rational RequisitePro solution
supports a choice o nonproprietary,
industry standard databases (IBM
DB2®, Oracle, Microsot SQL Server,
Microsot Access) with which you can
easily organize requirements inor-
mation in packages (olders) using a
structure that best suits your needs.
From views into the database, you
can prioritize, link requirements and
track changes.
Assigning attributes such as prior-
ity, diculty and status helps you
manage your requirements in a way
that is impossible using documents
alone. The Rational RequisitePro
product provides standard attributes
out o the box, while also being easily
customizable to support your project
processes and terminology.
While some organizations like to
use the Microsot Word application
to capture requirements, others do
not. Using the integration is strictly
optional. Entering requirements
directly in the Rational RequisitePro
tool is easy to do, giving you the
option o database or document
centricity—your choice.
Requirement documents are a amiliar capture and communication mechanism, providing context and
order. Dynamically linking requirements in documents to a database provides another powerul dimen
sion or organizing and tracking the inormation.*

Understand the impact o change
Change is inevitable. But change is
not the enemy—it indicates respon-
siveness to stakeholder needs.
Unmanaged change, on the other
hand, sends many projects spiral-
ing o course. The IBM Rational
RequisitePro solution provides unc-
tionality to help you understand the
impact o change as it occurs so
you can better manage its eect
on the project.
These eatures allow you to link
related requirements, so that as
change occurs to one requirement,
you can easily see its impact on
other related requirements. Having
real-time visibility to change lets youview its eect across the project and
assess coverage or verication and
validation. With the ability to perorm
impact analysis, you can make quick,
inormed decisions or scope man-
agement or resource reallocation. And
as requirements evolve, each modi-
cation made is captured, tracked
and ully documented by the Rational
RequisitePro product. Requirement
audit trails document the who, what,
why and when details o requirement
modications. And e-mails can be
automatically delivered to notiy pre-
dened stakeholders o changes that
may aect their work prioritization. By
understanding the impact o change,
you are much better equipped to con-
trol changes that aect your project.
The powerul interace allows you to organize requirements inormation in packages (olders) using a
structure that best suits your needs, providing quick access to requirements inormation.
Understanding traceability is easy with the tree view. Requirement relationships are shown in a amiliar
expandable and collapsible way, while details or the highlighted requirement are shown at right.

Parallel construction and maintenance
o multiple application versions have
their own impact on change as well.
Each release o an application
possesses a unique set o require-
ments that builds upon those o
prior releases—a natural result o
the maturity arising rom customer
eedback and marketplace growth.
To keep track o changes in require-
ments across these multiple releases,
the Rational RequisitePro solution
acilitates the creation and comparison
o requirement baselines. A baseline
is a logically grouped set o require-
ments or a particular version o an
application. The Rational RequisitePro
product can construct these baselines
and perorm comparisons between
them, exposing dierences at the
project, document or requirements
level in a Web-accessible report.
Project baselines can also jump-
start the creation o new releases,
helping to ensure ecient transer
o historical data.
Requirements management via the Web
Through the IBM Rational RequisitePro
Web interace, remote team members
can create, view and modiy require-
ments and requirement documents.
Administrators can manage projects
via the Web. Requirements trace-
ability can also be managed via the
Web using a traceability matrix or a
traceability tree, which visually depicts
relationships between requirements.
The Web interace permits require-
ments creation and editing capabilitie
reducing the need to install thick-clien
interaces on the desktops o remote
team members.
Integrate requirements across the
sotware liecycle
The better inormed each projectteam member is o the requirements
whether located remotely or locally,
the more accurately team members
IBM Rational RequisitePro sotware comes with a Web interace, making requirements accessible
to all team members, especially in remote locations or multiplatorm environments. Access, query,
modiy and create requirements and requirements documents, and manage traceability through the
RequisitePro Web interace.

can deliver a solution that satises
project or business goals. Integrat-
ing requirements with other liecycle
artiacts and processes helps ensure
clear communication and saves time-
consuming rework.
And through powerul integrations
with other tools in the IBM RationalSotware Delivery Platorm, the IBM
Rational RequisitePro solution helps
you integrate requirements across
the liecycle, optimizing team collabo-
ration around the requirements. The
ollowing sections detail how.
Requirements access or business
analysts
Oten, the rst step to improving a
business is to create and publish a
business model to help ensure that
the business processes, organization
and resources are well understood.
This model can also provide a jump-
start on the requirements discovery
process. The Rational RequisitePro
product enables requirements access
rom within the IBM WebSphere®
Business Modeler solution, allowing
business analysts to directly link tasks,
processes and resources with require-
ments. This capability helps ensure
that the sotware being developed
meets the needs o the business.
Requirements access or architects,
designers and developers
To ensure optimal design and to
minimize costly rework, developers
need access to requirements rom
where they sit. The IBM Rational
RequisitePro solution enables require-
ments access rom within the IBM
Rational Sotware Architect, IBM
Rational Sotware Modeler and IBM
Rational Rose® Technical Developer
tools. Requirements inormation is
presented directly in the integrated
development environment (IDE) by
the Rational RequisitePro solution—
no need or the developer to move
between products.
Through these integrations, the RationalRequisitePro solution lets developers
connect requirements to use-case
models, enabling instantaneous
access to use-case specications
rom use-case diagrams as well as
visibility into requirements inorma-
tion. This unctionality can help ensure
developers implement the unctional-
ity that truly refects customer needs,
as they evolve.
In addition, the integration capability
between the Rational RequisitePro,
Rational Sotware Architect and
Rational Sotware Modeler solutions
can enable you to connect design
elements to requirements. By linking
design elements with requirements,
you can easily review and assess the
impact o requirements changes on
design elements and keep developers
inormed o changes that may impact
their work.
Requirements access or testers
Without access to the latest require-
ments, how can testers be assured
they have prioritized their work appro-
priately? The integration with the
IBM Rational TestManager and IBMRational ClearQuest® products helps
ensure that requirements serve as a
direct input to test-case creation so
that testers and quality assurance
(QA) engineers can validate their
applications with condence. And
as changes to requirements occur,
testers can run reports that highlight
which test cases are impacted by the
change, helping to ensure their test
cases are properly updated to refect
the latest requirements.
