ForinformationaboutmanagingmailandusingtheAddressBook,selectthe“Mailandaddressbookmanagement”linkathttps://www.hampshire.edu/it/mozilla-thunderbird.

Installation ThunderbirdisroutinelyinstalledonallHampshire-ownedcomputers. Ifyourcomputerdoesn’talreadyhaveThunderbird,youcandownloaditfromhttps://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/. ThepagecontainslinkstodownloadthemostcurrentversionofThunderbird,forwhicheveroperatingsystem(OS)youareusing.

OnaMac,yourdownloadwillmountasadiskimage,andyoucanjustdrag“Thunderbird”toyourApplicationsfolder. OnWindows,thereisanautomatedinstallationprocess,andallthedefaultsarefine,sojustclickthroughthe“OK”andthe“Next”buttonsuntilyou'redone.

InitialThunderbirdSetup

WhenyoustartThunderbirdforthefirsttime,theAccountSetupWizardwillstart;ifthisisn’tthefirstaccountyou’vesetupinThunderbirdyoucanaccessthewizardbyselecting“File->New->ExistingMailAccount.”

1. ThefirsttimeyourunThunderbirditwillaskifyouwantittobethedefaultclientforemail,andwhetheryouwanttoallowSpotlighttosearchmessages.Ifyou’resettingupThunderbirdyouprobablywantittobethedefaultforemail,soleavethatchecked,aswellas“AlwaysperformthischeckwhenstartingThunderbird.”IfyouareusingaMacyoumayhavetheoptionto“AllowSpotlighttosearchmessages”;checkingthiswillincludeemailmessageswhenyousearchforthingsinFinder,whichisamatterofpersonalpreference.

2. Click“SetasDefault.”


3. Thunderbirdwillaskifyou’dliketocreateanewemailaddress.Instead,clickon“Skipthisandusemyexistingemail.”

4. Inthe“YourName:”field,enteryournameasyoulikeittoappearinthe“From”fieldofanemail.5. Inthe‘EmailAddress:”fieldenterthereply-toaddressyouliketouseinemail.ForFacultyandstaffthiscanbe

eitheryourinitials/departmentcode([email protected])oryourfirstinitial/lastname([email protected]).

6. EnteryourHampNetpassword.7. DONOTselect“Rememberpassword.”Thunderbirddoesnotstorepasswordssecurely.8. Click“Continue.”


9. Select“Manualconfig.”

10. Changethetop“SSL”settingtoSSL/TLS.11. FacultyandstaffmustsetUsernametoyourinitials/departmentcodeusername(e.g.kmmLO). 12. Click“Re-test.”


13. Ifyou’veenteredeverythingcorrectlyyoushouldnowbeabletoselect“Done.”Ifthereareanyerrors,usetheimagebelowtodoublecheckyoursettings.
