New tools for new jobs—and better tools for the same old jobs—were on display at the 2016 SEMA Show in the Tools and Equipment section. That area, which covered more than 63,800 net sq. ft. of the North Hall, also included shop equip-ment, uniforms and a variety of specialized supplies. Nota-

ble products from the New Products Showcase awards were a trailer storage system, a handheld fire extinguisher and a ratcheting flare nut wrench—all fresh takes on tools that have been around for a long time. The full list of nearly 100 entries is collected on the following pages.

“The tools introduced to market today will be used in shops tomorrow. As the aftermar-ket is keenly aware, with the exception of collision repair, it can take a few years for some of the tools introduced today to be relevant to, or widely adopted in, shops.

That being said, it’s important to remain aware of the changes coming to vehicles. Automakers will continue to focus on two key aspects when developing new vehicles: safety and fuel efficiency.

The industry is on course to expand the adoption of more computer-based systems in the vehicle, specifically the continued implementation of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles. Coupled with the focus on meeting CAFE standards to reach a 86-mpg fleet average by 2030, this will force automakers to find new and innovative ways to improve fuel economy. While electric and hybrid-electric vehicles can and will stay in the market, there’s varying degrees of how widespread that adoption will go. The focus currently is on implementing cost-effective solutions to traditional internal-combustion engines. Some examples include start/stop technology, gas direct injection, more efficient transmissions and lightweighting by constructing vehicles out of aluminum or carbon fiber.

This will translate to an introduction of additional tools and equipment needed to ser-vice these different systems—whether it’s calibration tools or functionality for ADAS and the sensors used for vehicle autonomy; different diagnostic and specialty tools necessary to work on these systems; or collision repair tools to service different composite materials.”
