Dealing RoomsThe ICMA Centre was the rst business school in
Europe to have dealing rooms and is still the only
university with a acility on such a scale.
Our three dealing rooms, all equipped by Thomson
Reuters, have always been an integral part o our
teaching and learning style our technology and
acilities allow students to put theory into practice.
As part o their coursework they experience the thrilland pressures o a live market take positions,
quote two-way prices and manage the risk o a
$50-100 million trading book. Students also manage
multi-asset portolios using live prices and the latest
investment management technology. Having these
essential practical skills in todays competitive and
uncertain environment gives our students the edge
over more traditional nance degrees.
We have over 100 terminals in three dealing rooms
equipped with Thomson Reuters 3000 Xtra Kobra,
Thomson 1 Banker, Thomson Datastream and
Bloomberg. The ICMA Centre has the most extensive
simulated dealing room acilities in the world. So
much so, that regular trading days are held in our
dealing rooms or graduate trainees and otherpersonnel o most o the major investment banks.
The brand new 40 station fagship dealing room is
equipped with all the latest trading technology giving it
the eel o a real trading foor. It has a state-o-the-art
37 oot 8 colour Daktronics ticker tape displaying up
to date market prices and our plasma screens with
the latest news and quotes, which allows students
to immerse themselves in a trading environment.
These rooms are not merely training centres ortraders o the uture; but they also enable academic
sta to combine theory and practice across a whole
range o activities, whether in derivatives trading,
portolio management, risk management, nancial
engineering or corporate nance.
Rotman International
Trading CompetitionWe are keen to oer our students a variety o
additional opportunities each year to add to their skill
set and CV. One o these is the Rotman International
Trading Competition in Toronto every year we enter
a team o students to compete in this event, which
is attended by universities rom all over the world.

The BSc Finance and Investment Banking is athree-year honours degree that has been developed
to meet the needs o the global nance industry.
It will provide you with a thorough preparation or a
career in the nancial markets through a combination
o academic rigour and practical-skill building.
In the rst year, you will study the core subjects o
economics, accounting and nance and gain an
introduction to the computer simulation o securities
dealing and spreadsheet modelling. In the second
year, you will cover key areas o specialisation
including portolio management, debt markets
and instruments and corporate nance as well
as undertake practical market making and hedging
in the dealing rooms. The third year oers more
opportunity or specialisation in elds such as riskmanagement and nancial engineering.
Graduates o the course continue to be highly sought
ater by international securities houses, including
Deutsche Bank, HSBC, Morgan Stanley and Merrill

1 2FIRST YEARCompulsory ModulesIntroductory Securities and Markets
Introduces you to the key nancial markets,
exchange mechanisms and the investment
banks and investment management houses
that operate in these markets and their
various unctions.
Introductory Finance/Trading Simulation I
Provides you with a knowledge o the key concepts
that underlie the valuation o nancial assets,including an examination o the pricing o stocks,
bonds and options. The module also provides an
introduction to modern portolio theory, a discussion
o how to measure risk and return, and an analysis o
whether nancial markets are ecient. The trading
simulation part o the module will introduce you
to computer simulation o securities dealing and
spreadsheet modelling. You will be taught the
relevant theory and will experience how this
theory works in a virtual dealing environment.
Introductory Financial Accounting
Examines the principal nancial statements
produced by companies. You will cover many
areas including: the concepts o prot and capital;
the balance sheet and prot and loss account;
company accounts; and cash fow statements
all are essential ingredients in corporate valuation.
Principles o Macroeconomics
Introduces students to the major concepts; growth,
infation, unemployment and interest rates, and the
interrelationships between these macroeconomic
variables. In addition students will also obtain a
better understanding o i) determination o
national income, ii) aggregate demand and the
impact o scal policy, iii) money and the role
o monetary policy in a closed economy, iv)
aggregate supply and iv) unemployment,
infation and the Phillips curve.
Principles o Microeconomics
Introduces students to the economic analysis
o decision-making, how markets work, and
why they sometimes ail. It ocuses on making
rational decisions (demand and supply, the
market mechanism, elasticity, market eciency
and market ailure) and business behaviour
(production, cost, perect competition andprot maximisation, pricing in pure and
oligopoly, barriers to entry and competition,
market structure, prices and economic policy,
comparative advantage and international
trade, strategic interactions).
Introductory Quantitative Techniques
Gives you the ability to undertake quantitative
problem solving in economic, management
and nancial applications, including the use
o spreadsheets.
SECOND YEARCompulsory Modules
Portolio Management
Examines the issues involved in understanding
the investment market and the process o nancial
intermediation, constructing an optimum investment
portolio, evaluating the perormance o that portolio,
and adjusting its composition through time to ensure
that its perormance remains optimal.
Corporate Finance
Explores corporate nancial decision-making,ocusing on the analysis o investment, nancing
and payout decisions when rms ace capital
market imperections such as taxes, conficts
o interest and inormational problems.
Financial Modelling/Trading Simulation II/CMS
Financial Modelling and Trading Simulation II:Provides a rapid introduction to using MS Excel
to solve a variety o practical problems related to
nance. Many careers in banking and nance
now require candidates to possess a strong
grounding in spreadsheet modelling and a working
knowledge o Visual Basic or Applications (VBA).
The module also extends and builds upon the
computer simulation o securities dealing that
was examined in the Part I module Introductory
Finance/Trading Simulation I.
Career Management Skills: Provides you withthe opportunity to develop sel-awareness in
the context o career decision making, extends
knowledge o the career opportunities that
are available to you, and the skills to make
eective applications.
Debt Markets and Instruments
There are two overall objectives to this module.
First, to develop an appreciation o the xed income
market by exploring traditional and innovative debt
instruments and methods o pricing. Secondly,
moving to a portolio context, you will explore how
dierent nancial institutions use portolios o debt
instruments to achieve stated objectives.
Introductory Econometrics
Designed to give you a sound intuitive grasp o the
application o statistical techniques to solve problems
in nance. Upon completion, you will be able to
speciy, estimate and evaluate statistical models.
Optional ModulesYou may choose one o the two modules below:
Mathematics or Economists
Provides you with a solid oundation o mathematical
techniques. You will gain an understanding o
economic theory that makes use o basic

THIRD YEARCompulsory Modules
Derivative Securities/Trading Simulation III
Designed to combine the theoretical and practical
approaches to derivatives pricing and trading. You will
gain an overview o derivative securities and markets
and a thorough understanding o derivatives pricing
and trading. You will also be guided on the use o
derivatives data and shown how to apply theoretical
models and strategies presented in class through a
number o case simulations in the dealing room. The
trading cases involve both discrete and continuoustime models and will require you to both trade and
build hedging portolios using put and call options.
Financial Engineering
Designed to combine theoretical and practical
approaches to exotic derivatives in dierent markets:
equity, FX, interest rates and credit. The objectives o
the module include providing you with an overview o
the exotic products in dierent markets, amiliarising
you with the dierent pricing approaches and
models, highlighting the importance o engineering
and innovations in nancial products and showing
how to apply the theoretical models and engineering
strategies presented in class through a number
o assignments.
Management o Risk
Introduces you to the latest techniques or measuring
and managing market, credit and operational risk
in nancial institutions. Banks and other nancial
intermediaries invest considerable human and
capital resources in trying to assess the risks in
their day-to-day business and to increase the
awareness o such risks among their employees
and business associates. This module will help you
to develop critical risk management skills that are
now considered indispensable or anyone wanting
to undertake a career in the nancial sector.
Optional ModulesFor the remaining modules you may choose any
three rom the ollowing:
Research Project
The aim o the dissertation is to allow students to
dene and execute a piece o research in nance
on a topic o their choice, with direction rom an
academic supervisor.
Foreign Exchange and Money Markets
The key aim o this module is to equip students with
a rm understanding o the structure and operation
o the oreign exchange and short-term interest rate
markets. This will not only provide the technical
knowledge required to trade in or use those markets,
but will also introduce and illustrate a number o
key nancial concepts such as balance sheet
constraints, liquidity, unding issues, no-arbitragepricing and arbitrage. The module has a strong
practical favour. Students will be given the
opportunity to trade various money market
instruments on simulated electronic markets.
Private Equity and Venture Capital
Introduces the characteristics o private equity as an
alternative asset class and the dierent strategies or
establishing a private equity or venture capital und.
Students will learn how to prepare a business plan
or the purpose o raising nance and to appraise it
as an investment executive. Topics include selecting
and approaching private equity and venture capital
rms; venture capital and the venture capital
investment process; management buyouts; the due
diligence process; dierent strategies or investment;
exit routes, including IPOs and trade sales.
Topics in Finance
Provides students with an understanding o nance
and the ability to place nancial innovations within
a contemporary and historical ramework. Modules
will vary rom year to year but may include: the
history o nance; annuities; commodities; current
issues in nance; asset pricing; corporate nance;
and risk management.

Practice o Entrepreneurship*
This dynamic and interactive module aims to inspire
students and provide them with the entrepreneurial
skills and condence needed to put plans into action.
Students will learn rom the experience o successul
entrepreneurs and are given a solid understanding
o the realities o a business start-up. Topics include
entrepreneurial orms and behaviour, creativity and
innovation, idea development and easibility testing,
understanding market dynamics and satisying
customers, raising nance, intellectual property,
networking, writing a business plan and pitching
to investors.

Scholarships and the Application Process
How to ApplyAll applications, whether UK, EU or international,
must go through the Universities and Colleges
Admissions Services (UCAS). Our programme
code is N302.
Academic Entry RequirementsGCSE: Mathematics grade B or above and English.
A and AS Levels: A total o 360 points rom either
3 A-levels and 1 AS-levels or a total o 340 points
rom 3 A-levels or 2 A-levels and 2 AS-levels.
Subjects must include a minimum 50 points
(B) grade in AS level Mathematics.
International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma
and achieve 6,6,6 in three higher level subjects.
Must also include grade 6 in standard
level Mathematics.
Other Qualifcations
We welcome students with other qualications
e.g. Scottish Highers, Irish Highers, BTEC National
Diploma, etc. You will be expected to attain an
equivalent standard to an A Level applicant.
International Foundation ProgrammeOverall average o Distinction level results.
(Please note that the oundation programme
must contain a core element o Mathematics).
English RequirementsProciency is required or international students.
TOEFL: (Test o English as a Foreign Language)
score o 570, with TWE o 5 or the paper-based

Examinations and AssessmentThe majority o units are examined with an element
o coursework. You must pass your rst year
examinations in order to proceed to the second
year, but these results do not count towards your
nal degree. The results o your second and third
year examinations are combined to orm your nal
degree classication; these are weighted a third
and two thirds accordingly.
Scholarships and AwardsUndergraduate Entrance Scholarships
