Henderson Police are going to help take the fright away from Halloween this year with safety tips for trick-or-treaters. Henderson Police suggest that trick-or-treating take place during the hours of 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

• Children should always be accompanied by an adult and are encouraged to wear bright clothing and masks that do not hinder their vision.

• If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

• Plan and review your child’s trick-or-treating route.

• Remind kids to accept treats only at the door.

• Everyone should wear a highly visible or reflective costume and carry a flashlight or glow sticks when trick-or-treating.

• Stay on sidewalks, walkways and paths. Always cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

• If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.

• Walk! Remind kids to walk in their costumes to prevent trips and falls.

• Carry a charged cell phone in case of emergency.

• Make sure trick-or-treaters eat a good meal before going trick-or-treating.

• Drivers, slow down in residential neighbor hoods and school zones.

• Check your child’s candy before you allow them to eat it.

• Report any suspicious person or activity to the Henderson Police immediately by calling 911.
