When is the lasttime you took agood objective
look at your entrance? Infeng shui, the entrance is avital key to bringing posi-tive energy flow into yourhome. The entrance is con-sidered the “mouth” of theproperty from which lifeforce enters allowing thoseliving in the home to thrivewith new opportunities.
Basic entrance feng shuiBasic Feng Shui says that
an entrance should beinviting, attractive, com-fortable and unobstructed. It’s often advised that youhave a welcome mat andportray life force in theform of color or plants.Items that block energyflow and create obstaclessuch as shoes and dead
plants should be removed. In addition, it is impor-
tant to have your address inplain view, and your homeeasy to find. Having yourname and address in multi-ple locations is favorable —on the building, the door, the mailbox, etc. The easierit is to find your home, thebetter of a job you aredoing to direct the flow ofenergy to your entrance. All of these are basic
“entrance rules” and canbe found in any simplefeng shui book. However,I’d like to go one step fur-ther and explain why sym-bolically and energeticallyit is so important to payattention to our entrances.
It marks a thresholdThe entrance of a prop-
erty (the entrance is con-
sidered the architecturalfront door versus thegarage door entrance)denotes the thresholdbetween the outer worldand the inner world. Itmarks the transition fromthat which is consideredpublic, to that which is pri-vate and unknown. Makingthe entrance comfortableeases the subtle, yet veryreal discomfort in transi-tion on a subconsciouslevel. Entryways that are stark
and empty create discom-fort. Mystery at theentrance does not invitepositive inward energyflow. The items and fur-nishings you place at theentrance need to create alink to the people within inorder to establish comfortand familiarity. By taking
steps to do so you will“entrance” the energy tomore easily cross thethreshold.
Create an identitySince the entrance is the
first clue a visitor has ofwhat lies beyond the door,it is important to create aclearly-defined identity. You can do this by usingitems that hint about the

windows are some of themost energy-efficient win-dows, because they do notwarp, shrink, swell, rot orcorrode in varied climates.Because of their thermalstability, they are excellentfor holding large expansesof glass. Pella Impervia windows
and patio doors, made ofpatented fiberglass com-posite materials, are proofthat energy efficiency does-n’t only come in the form ofwood and doesn’t applyonly to new homes. PellaImpervia products supportthe green movement andcontribute to LEED proj-ects in several major cate-gories.Here’s how this high-
endurance product fromPella is the perfect solutionfor a home or businesswhile supporting the greenmovement:
Energy, atmospherePella’s patented, five-layer,

Whether building a home or per-forming renovations to it, it’simportant to understand the
steps to reaching your goal. First, set your budget, which will help

place of your desire, find the right con-
tractor to help you with the build or ren-ovation work. Here are a few other things to look for:
• Referrals. Find someone that hasused the company before and speakshighly of the business.• Extensive customer service back-
ground. Search for a contractor that not
only does a great job for your project, but deals with problems swiftly. • Completion, timeliness record. This
is key in keeping costs down and ensur-ing that your expectations are fulfilled.

Here are four quickand easy ways thatTropical Wholesale
can help keep your homecool:
1) Tropical can install aradiant barrier. A radiant barrier is a fast
and inexpensive way forhomeowners to cool theattic or ceiling area. Itworks like this: Every day,the shingles on yourrooftop heat up and makethe temperature in yourattic almost unbearable.Sometimes, the heatremains there late into thenight. But the radiant barrier
helps block 96 percent ofthe sun’s radiant energy, which can reduce your attictemperature up to 30 per-cent. A radiant barrier onlytakes a few days to installand is an Energy Star-approved product.Homeowners can receive
up to a $ 500 tax credit forinstalling it.
2) Tropical can replaceyour old jalousies withEnergy Star-approvedLifetime Windows fromSimonton or AtriumWindows. These companies are the
only manufacturers to givelifetime warranties onHawaii materials andlabor. This, of course, includes hardware andframe warranties notmatched by other manu-facturers. By equipping your home
with windows from thesecompanies, Tropical canreduce heat transmission100 percent and UV rays96-plus percent. Thismeans saving on air condi-tioning bills for years tocome. There also is anEnergy Star tax credit forthese windows
3) Tropical can installPolar Wall siding in yourhome.Polar Wall is made by
Norandex. This is a insulat-ed siding that cools offexisting exterior walls. Thisvinyl siding has a lifetimewarranty against chipping, cracking, peeling, stainingor fading. Polar Wall also cools
your exterior walls by up to35 percent, saving home-owners money. This valuedproduct comes in 16 colors.
4) Tropical can re-roofyour home with a vari-ety of metal roofingproducts.
Metal roofs are the mosthurricane- and high wind-resistant roofs made. Andsince Hawaii is way over-due for a hurricane, this isreason enough for having ametal roof installed. But homeowners forget
that metal roofs also havedead air space that willhelp cool the roof. Thisdead air space also givesspace for insulation to beinstalled. Today mosthomeowners look to roofcoatings to cool roofs;however, many home-owner associations willnot allow white roofs. This means that metalroofing, insulation andradiant barriers are theonly ways to cool thesehomes’ roofs.
So now that summer ishere, maybe it’s time to gocool and green? CallTropical Wholesale todayfor a free estimate.

How toreduce
electric bill
As electricity costs con-tinue to increase, sodoes the popularity of
photovoltaic systems. By utiliz-ing sun power to generate elec-tricity for household needs, other than hot water, photo-voltaic systems can be largeand powerful enough to bringyour electric bill down to thebasic minimum charge for serv-ice. If budget is a consideration,
however, you can also opt toinstall panels in stages and addonto the system as needed.Ron Romero, owner of Hi-
Power Solar, is one of the mostexperienced contractors in thebusiness. He is highly qualifiedin the installation of both solarwater heating systems and pho-tovoltaic systems, and he canclaim a long roster of satisfiedcustomers.
“I’ve found that many newcustomers are unaware thatyou don’t need to install themaximum amount of photo-voltaic panels at the outset,” hesaid. “You can continue to addto these systems over time. Also, many homeowners don’trealize just how affordable asolar water heating or photo-voltaic system can be once youfactor in applicable state and
federal tax credits. “We are very knowledgeable
about the various ways tofinance these systems, and weencourage anyone considering‘going solar’ to contact us for afree consultation and estimate. Not all financing programs areequally beneficial to the home-owner, nor are all leasing pro-grams.”Hi-Power Solar is a Hawaii
Energy Efficiency programand Hawaiian ElectricCompany-certified installer. The company is also a mem-ber of the Better BusinessBureau and Building Industry
Association of Hawaii.Romero noted that the testi-
mony of prior customersregarding the quality of Hi-Power Solar’s systems andservice is always available andoften helpful to homeownersconsidering an installation andsorting through a large andoften-confusing body of infor-mation.

Smaller homes equal better quali-ty of living these days. Manyhomeowners are downsizing the
space they occupy, but are upgradingand customizing that space to make itbetter fit their lifestyle. Most homeowners today prefer an
energy-efficient home with lowerutility bills, rather than a cheaperhome without energy- and water-effi-cient features, according to a recentNational Association of HomeBuilders’ survey. One way to refreshyour home and make it sustainable isto upgrade your bathroom fixtures.Comfort is still key in these down-
sized but upgraded bathrooms. And itcan’t get much better than a lavishshower. TOTO’s Aimes Ceiling-Mount Showerhead with LEDLighting gives you this luxuriousshower experience with water gen-tly cascading down on you from theceiling. But since the LED lightdoesn’t require any electricity orbatteries, you can enjoy the experi-ence even more. Kinetic energycreated by the moving water pow-ers the candlelight-toned light,
keeping the brightness gentle on youreyes and flattering to your skin. But don’t stop with just electrical
savings in your bathroom. If youhaven’t replaced your toilet in several
years, there’s a
very good chance that it uses waymore water per flush than needed. Onaverage, toilets account for about 27percent of a home's indoor waterusage, making them the biggest waterhogs.
High-efficiency toilets canhelp your family significant-ly reduce your water con-sumption. TOTO’s Carlyle IIOne-Piece High-EfficiencyToilet uses only 1.28 gallonsof water per flush — and it’shigh performance, whichmeans you only need to flushonce to completely removewaste from the bowl. With anattractive design, this is a greatupgrade to your home, both inwater efficiency and aesthetics.Quality is very important to
homeowners these days, anddeveloping a beautiful, energy-efficient bathroom — especiallyin today’s downsized andupgraded spaces — is a growingtrend among homeowners that'shelping them improve their qual-ity of life.

Supportive entrywayUse hip-height items
around the entryway tooffer stable energeticsupport. Why? Becausehip-high items energeti-cally represent “cane”energy — what peopleuse when they areunsteady on their feet tosupport them as theymove from one locationto another. Items andfurnishings at hip heightpromote stability andoffer a subtle sense ofsafety. Entrance waysthat have the feeling ofsupport are less stress-ful to cross.
Making changes to inviteenergyIf you follow these
concepts when creatingyour entrance, you arenot only establishing asense of safety and con-nectivity for those whowalk through it, you areissuing an invitation forbeneficial energy toenter. Imagine yourselfin the shoes of a first-time visitor when youlook at your entrance. What do they feel asthey are walkingtowards your front door
— like they can’t wait togo in or like they feellike running away?Brainstorm for ways tocreate an invitingentrance so everyone inyour home can benefitfrom the positive ener-gy. It’s worth it!

Roofing products are constantlyevolving as traditional materials, such as asphalt, are improved upon
by cutting-edge science that creates fantas-tic new hybrids. LeakMaster Roofing installs all major
systems and is constantly on the lookoutfor the latest technology that addresses theproblems of the past. Most new benefits fall into one of two
categories: they either last longer than pre-vious products, or they make your homecooler. A cool roof is a happy roof becauseit doesn’t degrade as quickly because of“thermal shock” or UV damage.
Energy Star-rated asphalt shinglesMost of the roofs in your neighborhood
are probably asphalt shingles, or “compshingles,” and there are many good reasonsfor their success. These shingles are mod-erately priced and perform very reliablywhen properly installed. Additionally, theyare more forgiving to walk on than many of
the other roof types. In short, they are asafe bet. However, traditional comp shingles can
get very hot during the summers, whensurface temperatures often exceed 170degrees in the islands. This can leave yourinterior home temperature about 5 to 12degrees hotter than normal. The latest Landmark Solaris shingles
from CertainTeed are Energy Star-ratedand qualify for a federal tax credit of $500.LeakMaster Roofing is finding a definitemove toward cool roofs in general, and theLandmark Solaris is a popular new addi-tion. The product has a mildew resistancewarranty that’s good up to 15 years, and awarranty for damages caused by winds ofup to 130 mph.
Acrylic vs. SiliconeLeakmaster Roofing has been a leader in
innovative roof coatings since 1990. Thecompany has pushed for installing “fullfabric-reinforced systems” at 4 to 5 gallons
per 100 square feet, instead of the morecommon unreinforced 2-3 gallon systemsthat inevitably fail. The company also pio-neered Hawaiian SunGuard CeramicTitanium roof coatings that keep you coolin the summer. Lately, there has been a big surge in sili-
cone coatings because of their ability towithstand ponding water indefinitely. Pastproblems, such as the noxious smell fromsolvents that pollute the ozone, have beensolved. LeakMaster’s new HawaiianSunGuard Silicone is 95 percent solids andqualifies as a low VOC roof. That alsomeans you get more coverage from ourbucket versus the old solvent-based coat-ings. Because silicone is considered “non-sacrificial” — meaning it won’t chalk overtime — its life span is very long. Whenapplied properly by an approved installer, labor and warranties of up to 20 years areavailable.Call LeakMaster Roofing today to dis-
cuss the latest in roofing technology.
