How do you turn aboring master bed-room into a bold
expression of timeless, yettraditional, design? As Itackle my latest project, you’ll see that the solutiondepends on the plan — andthe plan, in this case, hinges on a pattern.
A stroll through Coletteand Edward’s lovely two-story house reveals a taste-ful yet neutral colorpalette, with not a patternin sight. Although it hasgreat bones, the masterbedroom is a distinctlyuninspiring space. Barewalls, a shortage of storagespace and Edward’s formerbachelor-pad furniture arecertainly sleep-inducing,but hardly conducive to aromantic retreat.
It’s definitely time for achange, and both Coletteand Edward are ready tolet me take them intouncharted territory bymaking a big, daring state-ment with their masterbedroom.
People are comfortablewith traditional, familiarshapes, but the familiarcrosses into the realm ofclassic contemporary
when you mix in a dash ofthe unexpected. And that’sthe key to easing peopleinto patterns: choosing aprint that interprets famil-iar shapes in fun newways.
With this in mind, Iopted to make the wallbehind the bed a focalpoint using handmadewallpaper that features abold lotus-flower design.
The next step was toupgrade Colette andEdward to a deluxe king-size bed, with roomenough for them and theiryoung daughter. A custom-made, oversized head-board upholstered in asolid charcoal fabrichelped balance the print onthe wall.
This bedroom’s classicvaulted ceiling is one of themost impactful elements inthe room, but it got lost inthe bland pre-renovationlandscape. To give thisceiling the attention itdeserves, we treated itwith a teal-tinted metallicglaze and then dragged abrush through it while stillwet, to create tiny stria-tions that produce an ele-gant effect.
To add more valuablestorage space, I designedtwo custom cabinets forthe wall opposite the bedand then created a comfynook for reading and relax-ing by placing a classic set-tee between the cabinets. The settee’s frame was lac-quered in an off-white andI had it upholstered in agorgeous complementarypatterned fabric.
Now it was time for allthe finishing touches thatgive a room personality. The custom drapery pan-els are made from solidblocks of fabric that pickup the room’s predominanthues of cream and charcoalgray, with a cranberrystripe to add a bit of punch.I chose a wonderful ivoryarea rug with a subtleinlaid pattern, and match-ing carved wooden nighttables topped by a pair ofwhite vase-shaped lamps.Wonderful accent pieceswere chosen in shades ofsilver, plum, jade and wal-nut, and some of thesewere placed on the moderndesk positioned in front ofthe windows. Once again,we picked up our colorpalette in the bedding.
Charcoal and cream arecomplemented by accentpillows that pick up on thedraperies’ cranberry stripe.
For the final touch, weinstalled the perfect light-ing fixture to crown theroom: a beautiful, blown-glass, eight-light chande-lier. It’s definitely the piecede resistance in thismakeover.
When Colette andEdward saw their new bed-room, it was love at firstsight. The classic yet con-temporary patterns weused made the bold state-ment Colette wanted, while the space reflectedtheir dynamic personali-ties. Now, there is morethan enough room forthem and little Clara onthose lazy Saturday morn-ings.
This bedroom has gonefrom bland to bold, and, with a little help fromsome gorgeous patterns, has become the privatesanctuary this couple wascraving.

T.Oki Trading, the parent company of Hawaii Home Expo, has consistently strived to find high-quality products. As theyears have gone by, the emphasis has shifted to focusing on
products that not only deliver high performance, but also are envi-ronmentally friendly. In fact, T. Oki Trading was the first companyto bring over Toto brand toilets, which was the pioneer brand indeveloping toilets with low-flush technologies in order to conserveour planet’s finite sources of fresh water. However, the style andfunction of a Toto toilet are not for everyone. To that end, HawaiiHome Expo is proud to announce that they have brought on anotherline of toilets and plumbing that specializes in low water usage.
Inax (pronounced ee-nahks) has been in constant competition withToto in Japan, and as such, their lines have slightly different function-ality as well as styling, yet have a similar mission to conserve water. One thing that Inax specializes in is dual-flush technology. Many oftheir lines have this feature available, and this allows the user tochoose from 0.8 Gallons Per Flush (GPF) or 1.28 GPF (this is for theECO-X series). When compared with a toilet that has a 1.6 gallonflush, the ECO-X series can save an average of 40 percent for a familyof four. There are five different flushing systems to choose from, allof which are designed for a clean, powerful flush while also reducingthe amount of water used. All of the toilets in the lineup have sleekstyling and all of them are skirted, which means that the under car-riage of the bowls are all flat with none of the pipes exposed. Thismeans that cleaning around the toilet is a lot simpler.
Also, there are two technologies that work hand in hand to keep thetoilet clean. Inax’s antibacterial technology, which hinders the breed-ing of bacteria and reduces stains, helps to keep the toilet clean. Theother technology, which may seem like common sense, is a smooth, hard surface. With a surface that is smoothed down to a nano-particlesize, waste doesn’t adhere to the bowl and is easily washed away witheach flush. The hard surface, which resists scratches, maintains thisultra smooth, waste-resistant surface. And, of course, Inax has its ownlines of washlet seats and integrated toilets to bring the highest stan-dards of hygiene and cleanliness to your family.
Most importantly, while having eco-friendly products is a wonder-ful concept, Hawaii Home Expo also chooses its partners based ontheir sensitivity to the environment at the factory level. Today, cor-porations play a larger role in the global effort to address the envi-ronmental issues facing the earth, and for more than 15 years Inax hasrecognized and prioritized its efforts. In 1992, Inax established its“First Basic Guidelines for Environmental Protection” and subse-quently has reduced negative effects on the environment by refiningits production processes, achieving zero emissions at all factories, developing a line of eco-friendly products and obtaining ISO140001certification for reducing wastewater from all manufacturing plantsto zero. In essence, Hawaii Home Expo strives to bring top quality,eco-friendly products to the market, but that would mean nothing ifthe production of these products resulted in excessive harm to theenvironment.
The first shipments of Inax will be arriving in early February. Tosee the Inax line of products, visit the Hawaii Home Expo showroomat 2933 Koapaka St.

With all the talk aboutphotovoltaic systemsthese days, have you
ever stopped to consider otherelectrical improvements to notonly enhance your new energy-efficient home, but improve andadd value to it?
When deciding to invest in a
photovoltaic system, take thetime to consider these electricalupgrades for the system’s bene-fits, increased home value, andmost importantly, safety:
• Electrical rewire
• Power upgrade of incoming
HECO service
An electrical rewire consists ofreplacing all old wiring, plugs, switches, light fixtures, electricalpanel and breakers. Homes thatare older than 40 years most like-ly have wiring that lacks a groundwire. A ground wire will redirectthe electrical current into theground during a short circuit orfault. New and properly function-ing circuit breakers ensure thatthe breaker will trip or cut powerwhen a ground or short is detect-ed, therefore minimizing poten-
tial danger. Consistently trippingbreakers? Rewiring will evenlydistribute power throughoutyour house, separating majorappliances and equipment.
A power upgrade is anincrease in your home’s incom-ing power from a standard 100amps to 200 amps. Electricityand water are very similar inregard to how they move. Just asa larger plumbing pipe allowswater to flow more quickly andeasily with less resistance than asmaller one, a larger and newer200 amp wire also will allowelectricity to do the same.Whether it’s electrical usage orproduction (photovoltaic sys-tem), your home’s electrical effi-ciency will be at its peak. Anupgrade now allows for addition-al amenities to your home suchas a split air conditioning system,
building an addition or expand-ing for a growing family andupgrading or adding appliances, just to name a few.
To have an experienced andknowledgeable contractor whocan advise you, not only on a pho-tovoltaic system that is right foryou, but also on your other elec-trical needs, is crucial. All GElectric LLC has the knowledgeand experience to give you theproper electrical advice youneed. With more than 20 years oflocal experience, we’ve beenaround and plan to stay around.
For a limited time, All GElectric LLC is offering its pho-tovoltaic customers a free 200amp overhead electrical serviceupgrade with a minimum 5KWsystem. Call us to schedule yourelectrical consultation to findout more. Remember, it’s All G!

Recently, our staffat R.S. ToyamaRoofing Service
Inc. completed our firstcomposition shingleapplication in Newtown,Aiea. We have re-roofedmany homes there in thepast with cedar shakeshingles and other manu-factured cementitiousmaterial, but never withcomposition shingles. The reason was that theassociation did not allowit previously.
This homeowneropted to use solar reflec-tive shingles, althoughthey cost more, ratherthan conventional shin-gles. With concrete tileson the roof initially, thehomeowner wanted tomake the house coolerby any means necessary.
This type of shingles is
being manufactured bymany companies. Onecompany in particularmakes them in threegrades with differentreflectivities. It is impor-tant to know the reflec-tivity of the shingles youare purchasing. Thehigher the reflectivity, the less heat transfersinto the attic.

POWERING UP WITH
PHOTOVOLTAICS
Photovoltaics is creating quitea buzz among Hawaii home-owners. Also known as PV,
photovoltaics is a form of solar-powering.
“But instead of heating yourwater, it actually produces electric-ity,” explains Chad Matsumoto, who co-owns Alternative Electricwith Bronson Apana.
Although the up-front costs maybe high, there aremany benefits thatmake PV a wiseoverall investment, and Matsumotooffers these exam-ples:
Lower monthlyelectric bill
This may be themost recognizablebenefit. AlternativeElectric offers freeconsultations andestimates on howmany PV panels areneeded.
A company rep-resentative visits ahome and looks atits roof design, electrical set up,electrical consump-tion and a homeowner’s budgetbefore recommending a suitablesystem.
Tax creditsAlthough the initial cost for PV is
high, many people may overlookthe tax credits. State and federalsolar energy income tax credits canreimburse up to 65 percent of thecost of a solar system.
Preserves the naturalenvironment and improvesair quality
Hawaii’s electricity is mainlygenerated from fossil fuels. By pro-
ducing electricity with a PV system,Hawaii can decrease oil demandand greenhouse gas emissions.
Investment purposesA PV system is one of the best
investments a homeowner canmake. After tax credits, the pay-back on a PV system is approxi-mately six to eight years, andmaybe even sooner as the cost ofelectricity rises.
After the system pays for itself, ahomeowner can enjoy 17 to 19years of virtually maintenance-freeelectric production. A PV systemalso increases the value of a home.
It increases equityand it’s a hot sell-er, according tosome Real-tors.
Alternative Elec-tric designs, in-stalls and main-tains solar PV sys-tems. “We takecare of all phasesof PV installations,so homeownersget the best qualitymaterials, de-signand workmanship,”says Matsu-moto.“We are also a full-service electricalcontractor offeringresidential andcommercial electri-cal services as wellas photovoltaics.”

Everyone loves granite forkitchen and bath countertops, but many homeowners find this
option for adding value to their hometoo pricey. When considering akitchen update, I found that granitetypically costs $50 to $100 per square-foot (including installation).
Gail Turner, a top real estate agentin Chicago, agrees that, “While there’snothing functionally wrong with lam-inate, it’s not what buyers are lookingfor.” Her advice is to install granite
countertops in your kitchen and bath ifyou really want to sell your home in thiseconomy.
So if you are looking for the beauty ofgranite without the price tag, considerpaint. Giani Granite Paint kits allow youto give outdated countertops a granitelook for about $70 a kitchen.

HAWAIIRENOVATIONCorian countertops. Gianigranite.com has several before andafter photos along with customer tes-timonials.
One kit can transform an averageL-shaped kitchen countertop (whichhas about 30- to 33-square-feet ofcountertop) in a weekend. I’m asavvy homeowner, but not an expertat remodeling projects and foundthis process to be easy enough for afirst-time painter. The finish has thesame functionality as your old coun-tertops as well as general careinstructions: Use a cutting board andwarming pads.
“Our product’s durability has oneadvantage,” says Tim Haas, vicepresident of sales for Giani. “If youscratch it or burn it, you can easilyrepair it by reapplying the mineralsand topcoat. So unlike other counter-top surfaces, wear and tear is neverpermanent.”
Before you begin, thoroughlyclean the area with a scouring padand then rinse with water. Usepainter’s tape to protect walls andcabinets. Look for any nicks andseams and apply a fast-drying woodfill, then lightly sand the area with afine-grit piece of sandpaper or sand-ing block.
For consumers who are willing totry this low-priced alternative beforethrowing out your old counters (likeI was), you will find the results wellworth it. You can choose from a vari-ety of styles and kit colors.
I selected the Chocolate Brownkit, which contains three colors:brown feldspar, Inca gold and choco-late brown. This look will achieve anatural granite style.
Although it was fun having every-one think I had granite installed, Ihad to reveal my new countertopsecret.
How to apply:
1.Roll on the black primer andallow eight hours of drying
time.
2.Lightly sponge on all the miner-al colors in the order specified
on the packaging. Let dry for a mini-mum of four hours. A simple artist’sbrush helped me complete a veiningpattern.
3.Next, apply the first clear topcoat and dry for four hours.
Then, apply the second top coat andwait four hours.
For more information, visit gianigranite.com or call 1-800-650-5699.
Giani Granite can be
applied with a paint
roller and sponge to
give countertops an
affordable, fresh look.
Most of us onOahu are stillreeling from the
shock of our last electricbills. And the water andsewage bills are no laugh-ing matter either. We’vedone just about every-thing to lower costs, fromusing solar to CFL bulbsand checking for the tini-est leaks and drips. Whatelse can we do?
Homeowners stoppedin again to visit withHarald von Sydow, direc-tor of Nano Tek-On, tosee if he had any sugges-tions. The last time theytalked, he was tellingthem how to increase thelongevity of appliances bygetting rid of limescalebuild up. He showed themhow installing an envi-ronmentally safe system
called HydroFlow on theplumbing in a home canbreak down existing lime-scale deposits, adding tothe life of dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, pumps, heat exchangersand even boilers in apart-ment buildings, providinglong-term savings. However, what aboutsomething more immedi-ate?
Customers were sur-prised to learn fromHarald that this samehigh-tech HydroFlow unitcan actually reduce theamount of electricity usedand water wasted in just afew months. Official U.S.government figures showus that just two millime-ters of limescale candecrease the efficiency ofa hot-water heater by 12percent. The morelimescale, the less effi-cient the hot-water heaterbecomes. More thantwice the energy is wast-ed with just one moremillimeter of limescalebuildup.
The more energy wast-ed, the more electricity isneeded to heat the water, and you’ll also be wastingwater waiting for the hotwater to come out of thetap.
When a HydroFlowunit is installed (easy todo it yourself or NanoTek-On will install it foryou), randomly varyingelectric fields are intro-
duced to the waterthroughout the entireplumbing system, break-ing up the precipitatesthat usually collect on hotsurfaces. The suspendedparticles wash away in theflow. The treated waternormally dissolves exist-ing scale in just a fewmonths. And, the Hydro-Flow unit soon pays foritself in energy and watersavings.
Von Sydow emphasizedthat HydroFlow can beinstalled on any kind ofpipe, including plasticand lead. It does notchange the chemical com-position of the water, andcontrary to water soften-ers, HydroFlow leaves thewater safe and tastilydrinkable. HydroFlow isconsistently effective, reliable and maintenance-free.
Once again, Harald vonSydow gave homeownersthe answers they needed. His knowledge of how tobe economically, as wellas ecologically, wise is
always very helpful. Nowcustomers can tell every-one that they know howto lower their electric andwater bills. They areheroes in our neighbor-hood.
Nano Tek-On special-izes in environmentallyfriendly surface treat-ments including sealantsfor glass and naturalstone, antimicrobial coat-ings and self-cleaning sur-faces. To learn moreabout HydroFlow, call395-2996 or visit nanotekhi.com

Homeowners often worryabout keeping theirhomes safe and secure
for their families. And it’s nowonder: Nearly 70 percent ofhome break-ins are in the formof kick-ins to a door, accordingto the U. S. Department ofJustice.
You have many easyand affordable optionsfor ensuring a saferhome, and ultimately, greater peace of mind. Here’s a home secu-rity checklist toget you started:
Assess the perimeter.Walk around your yardat different times of theday to judge lighting andshadows. Think about how fam-ily members enter and exit thehome from different doorways.Do you have sufficient exteriorlighting to ensure that they canenter your home, see and beseen? Install better lighting
near every entrance. Take alook at your landscaping froman intruder’s point of view.Plant some thorny or pricklyshrubbery below the windowsand next to entrances sothere’s no place for someone tohide in waiting.
Add an alarmed lock. Mostalarm systems triggerafter a door has alreadybeen opened. Schlage, aleader in home security, offers a first-of-its-kindKeyed Entry With Built-In Alarm. It’s an alarmedlock with the added safe-guard of a sensor alarmthat lets you know whenit is being tampered with.
It has three alarm modes, which can be set to alert you todifferent types of activity at thedoor — when it’s been openedand closed, when it’s been tam-pered with and when there’sbeen a forced entry.
“An alarmed lock provides an
added layer of security thatmany homeowners are lookingfor and can put their minds atease,” says Chris DeSchamp,Schlage portfolio leader, elec-tronic security.
The battery-operated units, which can be seen atwww.alarm.schlage.com, costaround $99 and are easy toinstall and are available at
select Home Depot stores,homedepot.com, lowes.com,amazon.com and build.com.
Make sure your windows arealso set up for security. Installquality window locks that keepwindows in a closed position,to avoid giving criminals anopen invitation to enter.Manufacturers offer a variety ofoptions to safeguard different
types of windows includingdouble-hung and casement win-dows.
Enhance security of glassand wooden doors. Make sureall your sliding glass and patiodoors have at least one of thefollowing to prevent them frombeing opened: a track lock, ahinged door bar, an insertionpin lock or a metal or wooddowel inserted into the trackthat allows it to be opened onlywhen you wish.
With today’s technologies,it’s easier and more affordablethan ever to monitor and con-trol your home’s security, evenif you’re not home. For exam-ple, the Schlage LiNK Systemlets you use any computer con-nected to the Internet or Web-enabled cell phone to turnlights on and off, check the sta-tus of the door, grant entry intothe home, open and closeblinds, and many more func-tions.
By upgrading your home’ssecurity, you’ll not only gainmore protection for your fami-ly, but you’ll also gain the bestsecurity of all — total peace ofmind. For more home securityideas, visit www.schlage.com.

Ready to give your bathroom a facelift, but can’t decide what changes tomake? From tubs to toilets to tile, the
sky is the limit when it comes to bathroomrenovations, even if budget is not.
Whether you are planning some small do-it-yourself changes or a major overhaul, hereare some fresh ideas for bathroom remodel-ing that will help you build the smart, stylishand functional bathroom of your dreams:
START LIVING LARGE
Feeling crowded in a small bathroom? Fora small-budget fix-up, replace your oldspace-wasting vanity with a smart open-design style that maximizes storage, whilevisually opening up the room. If your projectis major and you are opening the walls, replace your floor-mounted toilet in favor ofa wall-mounted toilet, such as PorcherSolutions Dual Flush toilet, which stows thewater tank behind the wall. The PorcherSolutions toilet is water-wise, as well asspace-savvy, and the EverClean surfaceinhibits the growth of stain and odor-causingbacteria, mold and mildew on the surface.
FOCUS ON YOUR FAUCET
If you have a small budget, making a sim-ple change like updating a bathroom faucetand accessories can still have a dramaticimpact on the style of the room. Faucets withthe Speed Connect drain can be installed inminutes and reflect any decor choice, fromtraditional to minimalist in popular finishes
such as oil-rubbed bronze and polishedchrome.
Change light fixtures and drawer pulls tomatch your faucet, splurge on some updatedcolors for towels and rugs, and you have abeautiful before-and-after makeover of yourvery own.
THINK ACCESSIBLE
A bathroom remodel is a great time toinvest in fixtures that will allow you and yourloved ones to remain independent in yourhome through illness, aging or other unfore-seen events. The best products also workgreat and feel terrific in the here and now.
A taller, Right Height toilet is a luxuriouscomfort. If you rarely use your bathtub, it canbe easily replaced with an acrylic seated-safety shower unit that simply slides intoyour existing tub recess. Optional acrylicsurrounds are easy to install and easy to keepclean, while the integral seat provides a safeoption for both bathing and shaving.
GO GREEN TO SAVE GREEN
The cost of water will be rising, so getahead of the curve by choosing toilets, faucets and showerheads that carry theEPA’s WaterSense certification label. Thelabel assures that you won’t be sacrificingperformance. Visit www.responsiblebathroom.com for a wide range of WaterSense-certified products and a handy calculator soyou can watch your water, and money, sav-ings add up.
