4A few months ago, I read a story in the press about the wineproduction in Spain under the next headline: France fears spanishwines. It explained how Spain became in 2013 the first wineproducer in the world, with more than 50 million hectoliters of wine inonly one year. This way, and for the first time in history, Spainsurpassed France and Italy in an strategic area for the spanisheconomy. However, even though production level is definitely a veryimportant factor, so is the quality. And in this sense, the headline ofthe story couldnt be more correct. France should fear spanish wines,but so should do Italy, USA, South Africa, Chile, Argentina,Australia and any other of the countries where wine and grapes havesuch an important meaning.

5Althoug is not something new in the last years, Spain has become, forright and own merits, a privileged player in the international winescene. Here, spanish wines look face to face to french wines. Evenmany times they look over the shoulder to chileans, italians oramericans.Through hard and good work, and blessed by an exceptional climateand soil, spanish wines deserved the place they are now.
Nevertheless, a little black spot has appeared over the inmaculatereputacion of spanish wines. The hardness of the economic crisis thathas shaken Spain in the past five years has weakened the nationalwine market. Even though spanish wine is mostly the first option inthe spanish homes, consumption has fall steadily in the last years.Because of that, now that economy seems to recover, it is a goodmoment to remember ourselves the huge quality and variety ofspanish wines, which are called to occupy once again the place theydeserve. To this task tries to help the GUA INTERVINOS, thah onemore year comes to offer an exclusive selection of the best spanishwines. From Rioja to Ribera del Duero of course, passing by other lessknown areas, this book is an exceptional ally for devoted wine lovers,but so for those who want to start their wine knowledge.
In any case, you shouldnt forget that the best wine is the one we likethe most. The one that more feelings, rememberings or emotions evokeon us. Because of that, the GUA INTERVINOS, as usual, comeswithout tasting notes. We prefer to contribute with a mere orientation,with information about the wine and the winery, and a score of everywine.You should be the one who discovers each wine and explain what doesit transmit to you. The same wine, tasted by two different people, canappear similar or, on the other side, completely different. Casa del Blanco
It's located in the town of Manzanares, right in the centre of the province ofCiudad Real. They have a hunting preserve of 2.200 ha, where native redpartridge prevails, and another one of 650 ha for cereal and irrigated land.We also have to mention especially the horse breeding, which also takes placein our installations.
The climate is Mediterranean with Atlantic influence. The vineyards are atan altitude of 617 meters.
Soils have varying degrees of loam and sand, and are abundant in lithium,surely due to the ancient volcanic character of the region.
The vineyard area is 150 ha.
The used white grape varieties:Airn, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Moscatel de Grano Menudo.
The used red varieties:Tempranillo (11 ha. older than 40 years), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,Syrah, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Garnacha.

Dehesa del Carrizal
It's located in the town of Retuerta del Bullaque, in the middle of theMontes de Toledo, near the Cabaeros National Park, between Tajo andGuadiana basins.
The climate is Mediterranean with Atlantic influence, that creates a perfectmicroclimate, with a wide temperature range between night and day. Thevineyards are at an altitude of 900 meters.
The vineyard area is 26 ha.
The used white grape varieties:Chardonnay.
The used red varieties:Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo and Petit Verdot.

Dominio de Valdepusa
Dominio de Valdepusa, located in the Toledo municipality of Malpica deTajo, has belonged to Carlos Falcs, the Marques de Grins, family since1292.In 2002 this property was granted the first pago Denomination of Originby the Spanish State.
It's a unique vineyard occupying 52 ha, including the original vineyard(14 ha) of Cabernet Sauvignon which was planted in 1974. Since 1991, ithas been progressively increased with Syrah and Petit Verdot varieties, bothpioneers in Spain, and Graciano.
The vineyard landscape includes large Iberian oaks (Quercus Ilex); its pathsare lined with cypresses, rosebushes and rows of lavender. Between the houseand winery a botanic garden was planted in 2000 with over 300 species,mainly Mediterranean of origin.
Its climate is continental, with marked contrast between hot dry summersand cold winters, also between night and day in each season. The averagetemperature is 17 C, dropping to 5 C in winter and rising to 26 C insummer. Average rainfall is approximately 450 mm.
The soil is made up of a 30 to 50 cm thick clay surface stratum resting overa two meter deep fragmented limestone subsoil formed during thecretaceous period. It is a basic soil type (pH>8), with excellent structure,porosity and drainage.

Pago de los Balagueses
Pago de los Balagueses is located near Requena in the hinterland ofValencia, in a sloping terrain, surrounded by a pine forest. Shielded fromother vineyards and their influence grapes grow in a special microclimate.The vineyards enjoy a Mediterranean climate, but at the same time islightly Continental because of its altitude and distance from the sea. Theaverage annual temperature is 14 C with a precipitation of 450 mm / year,which it is dry but not too stressful for the plants.
The vineyard area is 18 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc.
The permitted red varieties:Syrah, Merlot, Tempranillo and Garnacha tintorera.

Pago Florentino
Located in the municipality of Malagn (Ciudad Real), between naturallagoons to the south and the Sierra de Malagn to the north, its at an al-titude of 630-670 metres. Soils are mainly siliceous with limestone andstones on the surface and a subsoil of slate and limestone. The climate isextreme: very cold winters and hot summers with minimal rainfall, but ismilder and dryer than in the neighbouring towns.
The vineyard area is 58 ha.
The authorized varieties are:Tempranillo, Syrah and Petit Verdot.

Alella
Alella is a small, little-known wine district in Catalonia, north-easternSpain. Its centered around the village of Alella, on the Mediterranean coastjust a few km from the eastern edge of Barcelona town. It extends over theregions of El Maresme and El Valls in the province of Barcelona.
The climate is tipically Mediterranean with mild winters and hot drysummers.
The soils are clayey in the interior slope of the coastal mountain range. Thesoils situated along the coastline are known as Saul, the most tipycal,almost white in colour.
The vineyard area is 227 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Pansa Blanca, Garnacha Blanca, Pansa Rosada, Picapoll, Malvasa,Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc.

D.O. Alicante
The denomination of Origin is located in the province of Alicante (covering51 municipal districts). The vineyards extend over areas close to the coast(in the surroundings of the capital city of Alicante, and especially in thearea of La Marina, a traditional producer of Moscatel), as well as in theinterior of the province. Distinction must be made between the vineyardssituated closer to the coastline, where the climate is clearly Mediterraneanand somewhat more humid, and those inland, which receive continentalinfluences and have a lower level of rainfall.
In general, the majority of the soils in the region are limestone type, withlittle clay and hardly any organic matter.
The vineyard area is 12.570 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Merseguera, Moscatel de Alejandra, Macabeo, Airen, Verdil, Planta fina,Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc.
The permitted red varieties:Monastrell, Garnacha (Alicante, Gir), Tempranillo, Garnacha Tintorera,Bobal, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

D.O. Arlanza
With the medieval city of Lerma at the core of the region, Arlanzaoccupies the central and southern part of the province of Burgos, on theriver valleys of the Arlanza and its affluents, all the way westwardsthrough 13 municipal districts of Palencia until the Pisuerga Riveris reached. While the region has a long history of wine productiondating back as far as the 12th century, it was officially upgraded toD.O. status in January 2.008.
The climate is continental, with long, hot, dry summers and coldwinters. The altitude of the vineyards is 800-1.200 mts.
Soil in the region is not particularly deep, with soft rocks underneathand good humidity levels. The landscape is rolling hills where vinesare planted on varied soils, from limestone to calcareous, withabundant granite on certain areas.
The vineyard area is 450 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Albillo and Viura.
The permitted red varieties:Tinta del Pas, Garnacha and Mencia.

D.O. Bierzo
Bierzo county is located in the northwest of the province of Len.Geographically it borders the provinces of Ourense, Lugo and Asturias andit is a main connection between Galicia, Len and Asturias. Bierzo's vineyards are characterized by fragmentation of parcels andsmallholder plots, vines on slopes, from 450 to 800 meters which areoriented to the four cardinal points.Bierzo vineyard's soil stabilized from Miocene materials coated by a layerof Quaternary. Texture is silt loam, moderately acidic, with the absence ofcarbonates, typical of humid climates. The soils on slopes are made of amixture of minerals, quartzite and slate.The Bierzo is a very special and suitable microclimate for vine growing. Thenatural barrier of Sierra de los Ancares calm the force of the Atlantic stormsand produces a continental climate with the influence of the Ocean. Theannual rainfall is 721 mm and the average temperature of 12,3 C, withrecorded minimum temperatures of 3,6 C in the cold months andmaximum of 23,6 C in the hottest months. The annual average insolationis estimated between 2.100 and 2.200 hours of sunshine.
The vineyard area is 3.969 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Palomino, Dona Blanca, Malvasia and Godello.
The permitted red varieties:Mencia, Merlot, Cab. Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Garnacha Tintorera.

D.O. Campo de Borja
The DO Campo de Borja is made up of 16 municipal areas, situated in thenorth west of the province of Zaragoza and 60 km from the capital city, inan area of transition between the mountains of the Sistema Ibrico (at thefoot of the Moncayo) and the Ebro valley. The oldest vineyards date back to1.145 and more than 2.000 of the 5.000 hectares of Garnacha are between30 and 50 years old.
It has a rather extreme continental climate, with cold winters and dry hotsummers. Rainfall is quite scarce, with an average of between 350 and 450mm per year.
The most abundant soil are brownish - grey limey soils, terrace soils andclayey ferrous soils. The vineyards are situated at an altitude between 350and 700 m on small slightly rolling hillsides.
The vineyard area is 7.414 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Macabeo, Moscatel and Chardonnay.
The permitted red varieties:Garnacha, Tempranillo, Mazuela, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

D.O.Catalunya
The designation is extended across the areas where the grape traditionalharvest has existed unbroken in Catalunya autonomous Region, includingmore than 340 municipalities. It is located in the north-east of thepeninsula, bordering France to the north through the Pirinees, Aragon to thewest and the Region of Valencia to the south.The soils are formed, mostly, by sedimentary stones with predominance ofcalcareous materials and low contents of organic matter.In pre-litoral and litoral areas, the sea breezes regulate the solar heating,which is more intense as we go inland. On the coast, climate is mild andtemplate, with increasing temperatures from north to south, inversely to therainfall. The inland, distanced from the sea, has a Mediterraneancontinental climate, with cold winters and very hot summers.
The vineyard area is about 50.000 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Macabeo, Muscat, Parellada, Riesling,Sauvignon Blanc and Xarel.lo.Also possible: Gewurztraminer, Subirat Parent, Malvasia de Sitges,Picapoll and Pedro Ximnez.

D.O. Cava
The origin of Cava is associated to the splendour of Catalan viticulture bymid XIXth century. The studies of microbiology carried out by LouisPasteur applied to wine, involved a control of the second fermentation in thebottle and the discovery of cork allowed to avoid the losing of bubblesproduced in the wine. The Champenoise or traditional method was born thisway.
The Cava Region comprises a total of 159 municipalities in the provinces ofBarcelona (63), Tarragona (52), Lleida (12), Girona (5), La Rioja (18),Alava (3), Zaragoza (2), Navarra (2), Valencia (1) and Badajoz (1), whichtogether conform the delimited Cava producing area and are therefore theonly ones with the full legal capacity to produce this type of sparkling wineand market it under this name.
The vineyard area is about 33.000 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Macabeo (Viura), Xarel.lo, Parellada, Subirat and Chardonnay.

D.O. Cigales
The region of Cigales spans the northern sector of the Duerodepression, an area of 574 km2, on both banks of the river Pisuerga.The vineyards are located at an average altitude of 750 meters. The climate is continental with Atlantic influences, and its markedby great contrasts in temperature, both yearly and day/night. Thesummers are extremely dry; the winters are harsh and prolonged, withfrequent frost and fog; rainfall is irregular.The soil consists of tertiary and quaternary sediments: sand,limestone and gypsiferous clays, resting on clay and loam. Based onclay and loam and sometimes with sand and gravel. Its content inlimestone is highly variable.
The vineyards area is about 2.100 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Albillo, Verdejo Viura and Sauvignon Blanc.

D.O. Conca de Barber
Located in the north of the province of Tarragona with a production areacovering 14 municipalities.
The climate has mediterranean and continental influences. The vineyardsoccupy a river valley surrounded by mountain ranges without directcontact with the sea.
The soil is mainly brownish and limy. The vines are cultivated on slopesprotected by woodland. An important aspect is the altitude which gives thewines a fresh and light character.
The vineyard area is 3.807 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Costers del Segre
It's located in the southern regions of Lrida and a few municipal areas ofTarragona. It covers the subregions of: Artesa de Segre, Garrigues, Pallars,Raimat, Segri and Valls del Riu Corb.
The climate is Continental with very cold winters and hot summers.Rainfall is usually very low, between 385 and 450 mm per year.
The soil is mainly calcareous and granitic. Most of the vineyards aresituated on soils with a poor organic matter content, brownish-greylimestone, with a high percentage of limestone and very little clay.The vineyards are situated at an altitude between 200 and 400 m.
The vineyard area is about 4.300 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada, Chardonnay, Garnacha Blanca, Riesling,Sauvignon Blanc, Moscatel de Alejandra, Malvasa, Gewrztraminer,Albario and Moscatel de Frontignan.

D.O. Empord
Empord is a landscape of contrasts, situated in the far north east ofCatalonia. The Pyrenees, to the north, and the Mediterranean Sea, to thesouth, form natural boundaries. The breathtaking Costa Brava settingmakes Empord a truly unique place, linking the coast to the mountains,influenced by the famous northerly Tramontane wind. The production areacovers 48 municipalities spread across two districts. Empord has twogeographically distinct areas: Alt Empord with 35 municipalities andBaix Empord with 13.The climate is tipical mediterranean with mild winters with few frosts.Summers are hot and tempered by sea breezes. The average annualtemperature is between 14 and 16 C. Rainfall is around 600 litres per year.The Empord DO has very heterogeneous land, the majority of which has asandy texture and low organic material content. This is ideal for highquality winemaking. The soils are largely acidic, and the area varies inheight from sea level to an altitude of 260 m.
The vineyard area is about 1.800 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Macabeo, Garnacha Blanca, Moscatel de Alejandra, Chardonnay,Gewrztraminer, Malvasa, Moscatel de grano pequeo, Picapoll blanco,Sauvignon blanco, and Xarel.lo.

Manzanilla de SanlcarD.O. Jerez-Sherry-Xrs
The Production Zone is located in the extreme south of the Iberian peninsula.Only those vineyards located within the municipal boundaries of Jerez de laFrontera, El Puerto de Santa Mara, Sanlcar de Barrameda, Trebujena,Chipiona, Rota, Puerto Real, Chiclana de la Frontera and Lebrija, andsituated on land which the Consejo Regulador considers suitable, may growgrapes for the production of Sherry and Manzanilla.
The climate is warm with Atlantic influences. Summers in the region aredry with high temperatures. The west winds play an important role, as theyprovide humidity and help to temper the conditions. The average annualtemperature is 17,3 C, with an average rainfall of 600 mm per year.
The soil is formed by limestone known as albariza, characterised by theextreme, dazzling whiteness it takes on during the dry months. It is richin calcium carbonate (containing up to 40%), clay and silica from thediatomite and radiolite shells present in the sea that once covered the regionfar back in the Oligocenic period.
The vineyard area is about 10.000 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Palomino (90% of the vineyard), Pedro Ximnez and Moscatel.

La Mancha is the largest wine region in the world with around 300.000hectares of vineyards within its area of production, of which only about165.000 are able to produce wines with "designation of origin.Located in the Central Plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, La Manchaencompasses 182 municipalities of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca andToledo. It's a vast expanse of land that has a flat terrain, without great heights andwith red Miocene sediments of limestone structure. Temperatures are extremedue to its continental climate, ranging from the winter cold of -15 to 45 Cin the stifling summer. Dryness is one of its most distinct characteristics,since its micro-climate prevents the entry of moist winds, presenting a lowrainfall (300 to 400 mm per year). The production area covers the territory situated in the southeast of theprovince of Cuenca and the northeast of Albacete, between the rivers Jcarand Cabriel. It comprises 70 municipal districts, 26 of which are inAlbacete and the rest in Cuenca.The climate is continental with cold winters and hot summers, although thecool and humid winds from the Mediterranean during summer help to lowerthe temperatures at night, creating favourable day-night temperaturecontrasts for a slow ripening of the grapes.The vineyards are situated at an altitude range between 600 and 700 mabove sea level. The Montilla-Moriles DO covers an area about 40 km wide and roughlysquare, with Montilla at its center. As well as Montilla and Moriles, the areaincorporates five other municipalities in their entirety (Doa Mencia,Montalbn, Monturque, Nueva Carteya, Puente Genil) and a further tenin part (Aguilar de la Frontera, Baena, Cabra, Castro del Rio, Espejo, FernnNez, La Rambla, Lucena, Montemayor and Santaella).

The DO Montsant covers seventeen villages which are mainly within thecounties of the Priorat and Ribera dEbre in the province of Tarragona. Theland under vine makes up 2.000 hectares and the villages are: La Bisbal deFalset, Cabacs, Capanes, Cornudella de Montsant, La Figuera, elsGuiamets, Mar, Margalef, El Masroig, Pradell de la Teixeta, La Torre deFontaubella, Ulldemolins, as well as parts of Falset, Garcia, El Molar, Mrala Nova and Tivissa (two villages belong to Tivissa: Darms and La SerradAlmos).Although the vineyards are located in a Mediterranean region, themountains that surround the region isolate it from the sea to a certainextent, resulting in a somewhat more Continental climate. Due to this, itbenefits from the contrasts in day/night temperatures. However, it alsoreceives the sea wind, laden with humidity, which help to compensate for thelack of rainfall in the summer. The average rainfall is between 500 and600 mm per year.There are mainly three types of soil: compact calcareous soils with pebbles,granite sands and siliceous slate.

Located in the province of Navarra, it draws together areas of differentclimates and soils, which produce wines with diverse characteristics.The climate is typical of dry, sub-humid regions in the northern fringe,with average rainfall of between 590 and 680 mm per year. In the centralregion is transitional and changes to drier conditions in southern regions,where the average annual rainfall is only of 450 mm.The diversity of the different regions is also reflected in the soil. The Peneds region is wide and open, covering a long strip of land betweenthe sea and the mountains, half-way between Barcelona and Tarragona.The DO is made up of three distinct zones: The Peneds Superior (near theinland mountain range), The Peneds Martim (between the sea and thecoastal hills) and the plain between these areas, known as the PenedsCentral.The Peneds enjoys a wide variety of micro-climates, marked by thedifferent altitudes and the proximity of the sea. The climate is typicallyMediterranean, mild and warm in the Peneds Martim (Baix Peneds andGarraf counties) is milder due to the proximity of the sea. The PenedsSuperior (Alt Peneds, Alt Camp, Anoia and Baix Llobregat counties) hashigher rainfall and larger contrasts between maximum and minimumtemperatures. The Peneds Central (made up mostly of the Alt Penedscounty) has a mixture of the two microclimates.There is deep soil, not too sandy or too clayey, permeable, which retains therainwater well.

The Denomination of Origin Priorat is a small mountainous region locatedin the heart of the province of Tarragona. The relative isolation with respect to the influence of the sea and, at the sametime, the protection offered by the sierra de Montsant from the cold northerlywinds, give the area of the DOQ Priorat unique climatic conditions. Theseare marked especially by the remarkable thermal changes between day andnight. So, in the summer months you can achieve minimal temperatures of12 C, while the maximum can be up to 40 C.The soils are shallow, usually from a single horizon and immediately below(about 10-15 cm) is the bedrock. They have a low organic content matterand are formed mostly by the disintegration of the slate, which is calledllicorella, and are laminated and broken rocks of a dark copper colour.

The geographical scope of the Ras Baixas Denomination of Origin covers 33municipalities spread out over five production sub-zones in the provinces ofPontevedra and La Corua. Ribeira Sacra
The region extends along the banks of the rivers Mio and Sil in the southof the province of Lugo and the nothern region of the province of Orense.
The Sil river valleys have a continental climate, with long warm summersand cold wet winters.
The landscape of the region is dotted with Romanesque architecture, andthe steep slopes and canyons overlooking the two rivers are dominated bybeautiful banked terrace vineyards. Here, gradients can reach up to 85percent, making vineyard work laborious or heroic, as it is known locally. The vineyards are situated at an altitude between 400 and 500 m above sealevel.

Located between the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Segovia and Soria.
The climate is characterised in broad terms by moderate to low rainfall(400-600 mm average annual rain) that, together with its dry summersand long, rigorous winters and sudden temperature changes throughout theyear, is of a Mediterranean type whose primordial feature is continentality.
The soil is made up of a large, ancient plinth scored and partly covered byTertiary sediments. Most of the volume of these sediments is made up ofmore or less lenticular layers of silty or clayey sand, and the alternation oflayers, both of limestones and marls and even of calcareous concretions, isa notable feature. The vineyards are located on the interfluvial hills and inthe valleys at an altitude between 700 and 850 m.

Terra Alta
The production is situated to the south of Catalonia, between the River Ebroand the borders of Aragon, and includes the 12 municipalities of the countyof Terra Alta. The landscape has all the features of an interior region nearthe Mediterranean Sea: pre-coastal limestone mountain range, small rivers,rocky conglomerate mountains, holm oak and white pines woods and, aboveall, the agricultural soil coloured by typical mediterraean farming:vineyards, almond and olive groves.
The soil is generally of medium texture. Its common denominator is itslimestone richness and its lack of organic material.
The climate is Mediterranean with Continental influences. Abundantsunshine and little rainfall (400 mm per year), very cold winters and hotand dry summers.

The wine production area governed by the Toro D.O. is situated to thesoutheast of the province of Zamora, and includes part of the naturalregions of Tierra del Vino (the land of Wine), the Guarea Valley andTierra de Toro (the Land of Toro), and next to the plateaus of Tierra del Pan(the Land of Bread) and Tierra de Campos (the Farmlands).The climate is extreme Continental with Atlantic influences and quite arid,with an average annual rainfall of 350-400 mm. Winters are harsh withextremely low temperatures and long periods of frosts. Summers are short,although not excessively hot, with significant contrasts between day andnight temperatures.The soil is made up of sand sediment, clay and calcareous conglomeratesfrom the Pliocene, which cause brown limestone topsoils on loose material.The materials alternate from loamy materials to large and fine grain sand,with limestone and detrytic marl formed during the Miocene.

It covers the region of Aiara (Ayala), situated in the north of the province oflava on the banks of the Nervin river basin. Specifically, it's made up ofthe municipalities of Amurrio, Artziniega, Aiara (Ayala), Laudio (Llodio)and Okondo.
The climate is determined by the influence of the Bay of Biscay, althoughsomewhat less humid and slightly drier and fresher. In fact, the greatestrisk in the region stems from frost in the spring.
The soil has a great variety of formations, ranging from clayey tofundamentally stony, precisely those which to date are producing the bestresults and where fairly stable grape ripening is achieved.

The region includes nine municipalities: Caudete, Camporrobles,Fuenterrobles, Requena, Siete Aguas, Sinarcas Utiel, Venta del Moro andVillargordo del Cabriel.The land and climate, with Mediterranean caracteristics, but withcontinental influences, cold winters and slightly milder summers than inother regions of the province. Rainfall is quite scarce with an annualaverage of 400 mm.The soil is mainly brownish-grey, almost red limestone, poor in organicmatter and with good permeability.
The vineyard is about 34.000 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Macabeo, Merseguera, Tardana, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Parellada,Xarel-lo, Verdejo and Moscatel de Grano Menudo.

In the province of Valencia, comprises 66 municipal districts in 4 differentsub-regions: Alto Turia, Moscatel de Valencia, Valentino and Clariano.
The climate is Mediterranean, marked by strong storms and downpours insummer and autumn. The average annual temperature is 15C and the averageannual rainfall is 500 mm.
The soils are mostly brownish-grey with limestone content and without drainageproblems
The vineyard area is 13.000 ha.

Is located in the south of the province of Madrid and it covers three distinctsub-regions: Arganda, Navalcarnero ans San Martn de Valdeiglesias.Madrid is the only capital in the World to have an Appellation of Origin.
The climate is extreme Continental with cold winters and hot summers. Theaverage annual rainfall ranges from 460 mm in Arganda to 658 mm inSan Martn.
Rather unfertile soil and granite subsoil in the sub-region of San Martnde Valdeiglesias; in Navalcarnero the soil is brownish-grey, poor, with asubsoil of coarse sand and clay; in the sub-region of Arganda the soil isbrownish-grey, with an acidic pH and granite subsoil.
The vineyard area is about 8.300 ha.
The permitted white grape varieties:Malvar, Airen, Albillo, Parellada, Viura, Torronts and Moscatel de granomenudo.
The permitted red varieties:Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), Garnacha, Garnacha Tintorera, Merlot, CabernetSauvignon and Syrah.
