Lincoln University Cooperative Extension (LUCE) will host the second workshop of the 2017 GrowingGrowersWorkshopSeriesatitsUrbanImpactCenterinKansasCity,MO,followedbyafarmtourofnearbyAntiochUrbanGrowers.

Theworkshop topic isBuildingHealthySoils.Attendeeswillhear fromconservationspecialists fromtheUSDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) about the importance of cover crops, reducedtillage, and crop rotations in keeping your farm’s soils healthy. NRCS technicians will demonstrate aRainfallSimulatortoshowtheimpactofvarioustillagetreatmentsandgroundcoversonsoilerosionandwaterrunoff.Dr.Hwei-Yiing JohnsonandDr.RaimundBayan,LUCEStateSpecialists,willpresentonsoilamendments, including compost andbiochar.After lunch,wewill travel toAntiochUrbanGrowers, tourtheirfarmandhearabouttheir incorporationofbiocharandotheruniqueamendmentsastheyestablishpermanentgrowingbeds.Workshopattendeeswillreceivecomplimentarysamplesofselectedcovercropseedstotakehomeandtryontheirownfields.
