2017 Market Gardening Workshops Building Healthy Soils Lincoln U. Cooperative Extension, Urban Impact Center 1028 The Paseo Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64106 April 22 nd , 2017, 9:00am – 2:00pm Lincoln University Cooperative Extension (LUCE) will host the second workshop of the 2017 Growing Growers Workshop Series at its Urban Impact Center in Kansas City, MO, followed by a farm tour of nearby Antioch Urban Growers. The workshop topic is Building Healthy Soils. Attendees will hear from conservation specialists from the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) about the importance of cover crops, reduced tillage, and crop rotations in keeping your farm’s soils healthy. NRCS technicians will demonstrate a Rainfall Simulator to show the impact of various tillage treatments and ground covers on soil erosion and water runoff. Dr. Hwei-Yiing Johnson and Dr. Raimund Bayan, LUCE State Specialists, will present on soil amendments, including compost and biochar. After lunch, we will travel to Antioch Urban Growers, tour their farm and hear about their incorporation of biochar and other unique amendments as they establish permanent growing beds.
