From the Principal……..
HAPPY CAMPERS Our Level 4 children are off at Camp Queenscliff. This camp is a science-based camp with the children participating in lots of investigation activities. They will be visiting the Marine Discovery Centre, which is full of incredibly interesting artefacts and experiments in which children can participate. The children are also going on the Marine Biology Cruise. This boat will take a trip out into the bay where they dredge a small section of the sea floor and bring up the creatures and plants on to a special pond on the deck where the children can view these elements of the sea at close range. As well as these activities there will be plenty of time for beach exploration and participating in the Surf Awareness classes with Lifesaving Victoria. Of course, camps are jointly for education purposes and also for social interaction. We deliberately hold the Level 4 camps at the beginning of each year so that children get to know each other and get to mix with a wide friendship group. They also develop independence and leadership skills. Teachers really enjoy going to camp even though they get very little sleep and are on call for 24 hours every day. They give up their time voluntarily and do not get paid any extra for their time away. I am sure everyone will come back tired tomorrow afternoon. My advice to parents is to ask tired children what was the best thing they did at camp and be happy with that answer until they have had some rest and are ready to talk about it all.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING FLAGSHIP PROGRAM:
LEADING CURRICULUM CHANGE Kalinda Primary School was chosen last year by AITSL (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership) as a pilot school for the National Professional Standards for Teachers. We were chosen to video teachers working as an example of best practice for the Professional Standards. We are very privileged and pleased to participate in this program and this Thursday will be the first presentation of this program to a group of teachers and professional educators at Etihad Stadium. This Professional Learning Convention will bring together teachers and educators from around the world to share best practice in a range of different areas. It will be with great pride that we watch our teachers on the large screen. Some of the teachers who participated; Michelle Ogilvie, Matt Anthony and Ray Brookman, will be at camp, however, Richard Lambert, Anita Elliot, Lyse Carlson and myself will be attending the Convention. We have always been proud that Kalinda is at the forefront of educational development and this time it is a worldwide audience. GAIL POLLARD PRINCIPAL

Have you got your hat? All students must be wearing a hat when outdoors before and after school, at recess, lunchtimes and during sports classes. If they are not wearing a school-approved Sunsmart hat students will not be able to participate in outdoor activities and will be asked to sit in the shade under a designated area.

SNAPSHOT WRITING 'Snapshot' writing is where the author takes one single moment during an event and describes it in detail. In other words, instead of writing about "going to the beach" and all the things that may have happened there, one moment is described, such as the feeling of the waves crashing over them, or the feeling of the sand under their feet. It creates a vivid image of that moment in time – a snapshot! Level 2 have been experimenting with this different type of descriptive writing. Please enjoy the following: 'The Slurp' by Charlotte L (year 2): The fizziness on my tongue of the lemonade going down my throat. It was so cold that it gave me brain freeze – going up my straw making my fingers freeze when I touched it. It was the slurp of the spider. 'Paint' by Callum F (year 1): Paint flew on my clothes. I was painting my room. Isla was moving into my room, Isla's strips were blue, my ones were yellow. 'My Bike Ride' by Nate T (year 2): I rode my bike slowly up a huge hill and went down the other side really fast. I almost lost my helmet! 'The Trampoline' by Makayla Q (year 1): We jumped on my trampoline and put really cold ice on top of it, it made us feel cool!

“CANTEEN 2012” Canteen Volunteers 2012 I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful families that have replied to the Canteen Roster. We now have a full roster of eager parents willing to help. It’s a fantastic effort to see so many new names, and plenty of familiar names taking on Canteen duties. I look forward to meeting and working with you all. I will be sending home details to the families that have already kindly offered their services, notifying you of the dates for your roster. Hot Diggity Dog Day Our special food day for this term is a Hot Diggity Dog Day to be held on Tuesday 27th March. The meal includes a Hot Dog, Doughnut and drink of your choice at a cost of $5.50. A form will be sent home to each student in the near future. Kelly Woodman Canteen Manager
RECIPE OF THE WEEK!
Perfect for the lunchbox as an alternative to sandwiches or offer as an after school snack. This inexpensive and tasty slice is easy to make.
Makes: 12 pieces
Preparation: 10-15 minutes
Cooking Time: 25 minutes
Julie Goodwin’s Bacon & Vegetable Slice
What you need: 1 small (100g) red onion, chopped coarsely
1 medium (120g) carrot, chopped coarsely
1 small (150g) capsicum, chopped coarsely
6 eggs
1 cup (150g) self-raising flour
50g baby spinach leaves, shredded finely
200g short cut rindless bacon, chopped finely
1 1/2 cups (180g) grated cheddar cheese
1/4 cup (60ml) vegetable oil
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Grease a 20cm x 30cm slice pan, line base with baking paper.
2. Place onion, carrot and capsicum into the bowl of a food processor and process until vegetables are of a grated consistency (If you don’t have a food processor, you can grate it with a cheese grater, but that is more time consuming)
3. Whisk the eggs and flour in a large bowl until combined. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Add all the vegetables, bacon, cheese and oil; stir until combined.
4. Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 25 minutes or until set.
5. Cool in the dish and cut into 12 pieces with a sharp knife.

BOOKLISTS 2012 Payments for the 2012 Booklists are now overdue. Thank you to those families who have already paid. If you have not paid, please arrange to do so as soon as possible. Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) – If you are eligible for EMA please complete and return all forms as applications close on 29
th February 2012. Late applications will not be accepted.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS (WWCC) – A reminder to all parents that if you are volunteering your time in the classrooms or around the school (including excursions, camps, canteen, etc.) you will require a Working With Children Check (volunteer status). The Check is free for volunteers and forms can be retained from the school office and lodged at your nearest Post Office. CONSENT FORMS 2012 – Consent Forms for 2012 were sent home last week. Could all forms please be completed and returned to the school by Monday 27
th February. You should have received a set for each
child. If not, spares are available at the office. LEANNE THEISINGER - BUSINESS MANAGER FOR ALL JUNIOR BUDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS Photography is an exciting area of art which is available to all ages. The annual Maroondah City Council Photographic Competition is now open for entries. There is a Junior section for children up to 12 years to enter. Photographs must be of something related to the Maroondah community, but beyond that you can let your imagination run wild! The entries will be displayed at Maroondah Art Gallery during June and July, and prizes include gift vouchers and Croydon Leisure & Aquatic Centre passes. If you are interested in entering this competition, I have entry forms in the Art Room. LIBBY SHAW – VISUAL ARTS TEACHERS
EASTER RAFFLE - HELP WANTED! We would like to run our always-successful Easter Raffle again this year. The Easter Raffle is one of our best fundraisers with around 150 prizes, and the children really love this time. In order to do this, we need some new helpers to come on board as soon as possible. The format has been established and refined over the years and requires minimal effort to promote. As this is my last year, I will be happy to guide any new helpers who are prepared to assist the Fundraising Committee in the task and explain the system. Have a chat to some of your fellow parents - see if you and a friend may be interested in doing this together.

20 - 24 February 2012 WEEK 4 – TERM 1 Last week Children made beautiful French toast for themselves and parents on a Valentines day parents
breakfast (recipe for the Raspberry muffins available on the sign in desk), another display board was painted by the children, a fantastic quiet, soft area was set up with new books and a games cupboard by Karen Klewer
near the sign in desk. This week We are Building, Dismantling and looking underneath the surface.
Staff News – Jade Robinson has returned and is working all morning and afternoon sessions and unfortunately Janine Shepherd has accepted a new job closer to home, we will miss her.
