Forums
Commonly known as message boards or discussion boards
Forums are web applications that manage user generated content
This content is structured and divided into sections called “threads”.
Here, people with common interest share ideas
Forums The main purpose of a forum is to exchange
open messages
Forums also tend to create bonds between members
Most forums are governed by general codes of conduct which are guarded by moderators
Forum software is freely available (phpBB,SFM)

Forums tend to have universal rules against: Spamming
Double posting
Thread hijacking
“Sock Puppets”
“Bumping”
Forums in the classroom
Encourages students to approach a topic from different points of view
Share responses and questions with classmates
Verify student participation Monitor student responses Use the discussion to determine
areas of research
Disadvantages of Forums
Students may inadvertently use Internet abbreviations (LOL, IDK, IMO)
Requires equipment with Internet connection
Some technical knowledge to administer forum
Pod-casts
Pod-casts are video and audio files archived in the Internet
These can be accessed by individuals through a computer online
Pod-casts can be transferred to portable devices such as iPods or Mp3 players
Derived from iPOD & broadCAST
Pod-casts
Pod-casts are uploaded periodically and are available through many websites
Pod-casts can be received automatically from websites
This can be achieved through RSS feeds
They are normally acquired through subscriptions
Pod-casts in the classroom
Students and teacher can create original material
They can be download for educational purposes
Students share learning experiences Provides a wide audience for students Teacher can provide additional
material Allows time flexibility
Disadvantages of Pod-casts
Not all Pod-cast formats are compatible Some schools block downloads or Mp3
files Requires recording, editing and
publishing High system requirements Requires high speed Internet connection Students must have access to a
computers or reproduction devices
