CROSS-CANADA GREEN RIDE FOR GREEN JOBS BIKETOUR CROSSES THE FINISH LINE IN ST. JOHN’S,NEWFOUNDLAND After biking over 9,250 km/5,750 miles across Canada, Zac Wagman (left), Green JobsManager for Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada) – an initiative of the SustainableForestry Initiative – completed the Green Ride for Green Jobs on September 23 at the TerryFox Mile 0 Monument in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Wagman’s journey began in Victoria, B.C., on May 13, and took him through over 100communities across nine provinces where he met with over 230 Green Jobs youth and morethan 50 employers. The youth Wagman met on his ride were just some of the 2,000 studentsthat PLT Canada helped to place in green jobs since 2018 with support from over 150employers across Canada and funding provided by the Government of Canada. Wagman rode a wooden bicycle manufactured by Picolo Velo in Montreal, the bike wasrecently SFI-certified—ensuring that the wood used in the manufacturing process comes fromresponsibly managed forests. The Green Ride for Green Jobs was made possible by sponsors including West Fraser, MillarWestern, Resolute Forest Products, Forest Products Association of Canada, Domtar, MosaicForest Management, Canfor, EACOM Timber Corp., Western Canada SFI ImplementationCommittee, Central Canada SFI Implementation Committee, Acadian Timber, and FlemingCollege. PROJECT LEARNING TREE (PLT) CARBON& CLIMATE CURRICULUM WINS 2020TEACHERS’ CHOICE AWARD Project Learning Tree’s Carbon & Climate curriculum has beenselected a Learning magazine 2020 Teachers’ Choice Awardfor the Classroom winner, earning the seal of approval foroutstanding educational value. For 6th-8th grade teachers, Carbon & Climate helps introducestudents to some of the complex issues involved in climate change. This is the second Teachers’ Choice Award for PLT curriculum since it became part of SFI in2017 and its third overall. Last year PLT’s Energy in Ecosystems for grades 3-5 andpreviously PLT’s Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood also received Teachers’Choice Awards for the Classroom. Project Learning Tree is an initiative of the SustainableForestry Initiative. SFI’s Education programs expand the knowledge, skills, and opportunitiesto sustain communities, forests, and the environment. (Learn more.)

ABC SURVEY SHOWS WORKINGFORESTS CAN PROVIDE A “MOSAIC”OF FORESTS TO SUPPORT BIRDS The 2019 Working Forests for Birds Survey from theAmerican Bird Conservancy (ABC) is designed to answer thequestion: “How do forests that are managed to meet SFIstandards, benefit birds?” The survey shows that working

forests, such as those certified under the SFI standards, can provide the mosaic of forests indifferent stages, from recently harvested and good for quail, to mature forests that are good fornuthatches. This was the second year for the bird survey, which was supported by SFI ProgramParticipants and the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement. Four study areasacross the U.S. Southeast featured 166 counts and recorded 86 different species. The nextsteps will be to analyze the data in greater detail with more sophisticated tools. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS MAP THE FUTURE OF FORESTSAT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Sustainable forest management is an important tool to ensure a healthy planet and sharedglobal prosperity. However, despite a great need for future leaders in sustainable forestry,there are difficult barriers for many youths interested in pursuing related degrees.The Multicultural Apprenticeship Program (MAP) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks tochange that. The program gives underserved high school students hands-on exposure tocareers in sustainable forestry. In partnership with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, MSUwants to share their success and grow the program.

Through MAP, high school students from Michigan and otherparts of the United States have the opportunity to explorecareers in forestry, natural resource management, animalsciences, and other related fields. Sponsored by MSU’sCollege of Agriculture and Natural Resources, MAP pairseach student with a faculty member on a project that providesboth fieldwork and laboratory experience. (Read the story.)

EARTH RANGERS AND SFI ARECREATING A GENERATION OFCONSERVATIONISTS BY FOCUSINGON HOPE

The Canadian kids’ conservation organization, Earth Rangers wants to create a newgeneration of conservationists by focusing on hope. This SFI partner is inspiring newgenerations who are ready to roll up their sleeves and do what it takes to make a better future. Jess Kaknevicius, SFI’s Vice President of Community Engagement, sat down with TovahBarocas, Earth Ranger’s new President to discuss how their new Clubs program has grownwith the support from the SFI Community Grants Program. Barocas notes, among otherimportant insights, that Earth Rangers recognizes, “that our SFI Community Grant is comingfrom an organization that shares our values when it comes to supporting sustainable forestryand local communities.” (Read Jess’s blog.)
