JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND After biking over 9,250 km/5,750 miles across Canada, Zac Wagman (left), Green Jobs Manager for Project Learning Tree Canada (PLT Canada) – an initiative of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative – completed the Green Ride for Green Jobs on September 23 at the Terry Fox Mile 0 Monument in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Wagman’s journey began in Victoria, B.C., on May 13, and took him through over 100 communities across nine provinces where he met with over 230 Green Jobs youth and more than 50 employers. The youth Wagman met on his ride were just some of the 2,000 students that PLT Canada helped to place in green jobs since 2018 with support from over 150 employers across Canada and funding provided by the Government of Canada. Wagman rode a wooden bicycle manufactured by Picolo Velo in Montreal, the bike was recently SFI-certified—ensuring that the wood used in the manufacturing process comes from responsibly managed forests. The Green Ride for Green Jobs was made possible by sponsors including West Fraser, Millar Western, Resolute Forest Products, Forest Products Association of Canada, Domtar, Mosaic Forest Management, Canfor, EACOM Timber Corp., Western Canada SFI Implementation Committee, Central Canada SFI Implementation Committee, Acadian Timber, and Fleming College. ABC SURVEY SHOWS WORKING FORESTS CAN PROVIDE A “MOSAIC” OF FORESTS TO SUPPORT BIRDS The 2019 Working Forests for Birds Survey from the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is designed to answer the question: “How do forests that are managed to meet SFI standards, benefit birds?” The survey shows that working forests, such as those certified under the SFI standards, can provide the mosaic of forests in different stages, from recently harvested and good for quail, to mature forests that are good for nuthatches. This was the second year for the bird survey, which was supported by SFI Program Participants and the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement. Four study areas across the U.S. Southeast featured 166 counts and recorded 86 different species. The next steps will be to analyze the data in greater detail with more sophisticated tools. However, despite a great need for future leaders in sustainable forestry, there are difficult barriers for many youths interested in pursuing related degrees. The Multicultural Apprenticeship Program (MAP) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks to change that. The program gives underserved high school students hands-on exposure to careers in sustainable forestry. In partnership with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, MSU wants to share their success and grow the program. Through MAP, high school students from Michigan and other parts of the United States have the opportunity to explore careers in forestry, natural resource management, animal sciences, and other related fields. Sponsored by MSU’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, MAP pairs each student with a faculty member on a project that provides both fieldwork and laboratory experience. (Read the story .) This SFI partner is inspiring new generations who are ready to roll up their sleeves and do what it takes to make a better future. Jess Kaknevicius, SFI’s Vice President of Community Engagement, sat down with Tovah Barocas, Earth Ranger’s new President to discuss how their new Clubs program has grown with the support from the SFI Community Grants Program. Barocas notes, among other important insights, that Earth Rangers recognizes, “that our SFI Community Grant is coming from an organization that shares our values when it comes to supporting sustainable forestry and local communities.” (Read Jess’s blog .) ® SM
