received the 1994 Certificate of Meritori-ous Service from the Medical Society ofthe District of Columbia. Dr. Colemanwas recognized for 50 years of pediatricpractice and significant child-health con-tributions to the Washington, D.C., area.

Dr. Coleman established the first areapoison-control center in the 1950s. In the1970s, he provided some of the first localresearch on child safety seats, insistingthat newborns go home from the hospitalin safety seats. Dr. Coleman is a pastmember of the AAP Board of Directorsand past chair of the AAP Committee onAccident and Poison Prevention. He is a

founding member of the AAP SeniorSection.

Carden Johnston, M.D., FAAP, amember of the AAP Board of Directors,hosts a weekly pediatric-health and safe-ty-information television show, nowavailable via satellite on 209 NBC affili-ates. Taped at The Children's Hospital ofAlabama in Birmingham, "KidCheck"has been syndicated statewide since1991. Dr. Johnston specializes in emer-gency medicine. In MemoriamStephen Gans, M.D., FAAP, died

Aug. 1. He was 74. Dr. Gans founded theJournal ofPediatric Surgery with formnerSurgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D.,FAAP. He was the journal's editor for 19years. He was founder and co-editor ofthe journal Seminars in PediatricSurgery. He was founder and first presi-dent of the Pacific Association ofPediatric Surgeons.

Dr. Gans was the first surgeon atCedars-Sinai Medical Center trained inpediatric surgery. He performed the firstsuccessful separation of conjoined twins.The twins were one hour and 45 minutesold, the youngest in medical history. Hewas a clinical professor of surgery atUCLA and past chairman of the Depart-ment of Pediatric Surgery at Cedars- Sinai.Donations to an international traveling

Joseph Jenkins, M.D., FAAP, diedOct. 4. He was 79. Dr. Jenkins was in pri-vate pediatric practice for 30 years inEuclid and Willoughby, Ohio. He servedin the U.S. Army Panama Canal Zonebetween 1953 and 1955. In 1981, heretired to his hometown of Vinalhaven,Maine, where he brought medical care toremote Maine islands on a church mis-sion boat. He also conducted earlychildhood health screenings in severallocal communities.A memorial fund has been established

to the Vinalhaven ambulance service, c/oIsland Community Medical Center, P.O.Box 812, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.
