FelowVs in te Newvs Leonard Banco, M.D., FAAP, of Hartford, recently was elected AAP Con- necticut Chapter president. Jeanne Marconi, M.D., FAAP, was named vice president. Allan Coleman, M.D., FAAP, received the 1994 Certificate of Meritori- ous Service from the Medical Society of the District of Columbia. Dr. Coleman was recognized for 50 years of pediatric practice and significant child-health con- tributions to the Washington, D.C., area. Dr. Coleman established the first area poison-control center in the 1950s. In the 1970s, he provided some of the first local research on child safety seats, insisting that newborns go home from the hospital in safety seats. Dr. Coleman is a past member of the AAP Board of Directors and past chair of the AAP Committee on Accident and Poison Prevention. He is a founding member of the AAP Senior Section. Carden Johnston, M.D., FAAP, a member of the AAP Board of Directors, hosts a weekly pediatric-health and safe- ty-information television show, now available via satellite on 209 NBC affili- ates. Taped at The Children's Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham, "KidCheck" has been syndicated statewide since 199 1. Dr. Johnston specializes in emer- gency medicine. He covers common childhood illnesses and injuries and dis- cusses innovative pediatric treatments, technologies and prevention tips. Phillip Kibort, M.D., FAAP, recently was named medical director of ambulato- ry services for three Children's Health Care campuses in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Minnetonka, Minn. Dr. Kibort has been medical director of ambulatory and medical services for the Children's-St. Paul location since 1992. John Paschen, M.D., FAAP, Ames, Iowa, received $10,000 for his study, "Reliability of prenatal GBS cultures used in a protocol for neonatal GBS infection prevention in a midwestem population. Krystyna Tuckerman, M.D., FAAP, Bangor., Maine, reeie .50 for hesud, "Plo std fotooo-s children with spmna bifida and cerebral palsy." Stephen Woack, M.D., FAAP, Sedalia, Mo., received $4,000 for his study, "Pediatric telephone traiae." cRPPr monies are used to fund state-level and local offce- based research conducted by AAP members devoting at least 90 percent of thieir tie to direct patient care. Funds also are used partially to finance AAP Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS). The RPPF is funded through the AAP Friends of Children Fund. David Chronley, M.D., FAAP, was elected vice presid ent. Vera Tait, M.D., FAAP, of Salt Lake City, recently was elected AAP Utah Chapter president. In Memoriam Stephen Gans, M.D., FAAP, died Aug. 1. He was 74. Dr. Gans founded the Journal of Pediatric Surgery with formner Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., FAAP. He was the journal's editor for 19 years. He was founder and co-editor of the journal Seminars in Pediatric Surgery. He was founder and first presi- dent of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons. Dr. Gans was the first surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center trained in pediatric surgery. He performed the first successful separation of conjoined twins. The twins were one hour and 45 minutes old, the youngest in medical history. He was a clinical professor of surgery at UCLA and past chairman of the Depart- ment of Pediatric Surgery at Cedars- Sinai. Joseph Jenkins, M.D., FAAP, died Oct. 4. He was 79. Dr. Jenkins was in pri- vate pediatric practice for 30 years in Euclid and Willoughby, Ohio. He served in the U.S. Army Panama Canal Zone between 1953 and 1955. In 1981, he retired to his hometown of Vinalhaven, Maine, where he brought medical care to remote Maine islands on a church mis- sion boat. He also conducted early childhood health screenings in several local communities. A memorial fund has been established to the Vinalhaven ambulance service, c/o Island Community Medical Center, P.O. Dr. Coleman established the first areapoison-control center in the 1950s.
