According to a 2016 Gallup Survey of pool owners sponsored by The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals, pool professionals are one of the most relied on source of information about pool maintenance. And what’s more, a recent APSP membership survey indicates that education and training is the number one perceived benefit of membership. Members want access to education and training for themselves and their employees.
“The Gallup consumer research findings are important because it tells us that the consumer trusts pool professionals,” said APSP President & CEO Rich Gottwald. “But the onus is on the professional to make sure they are up-to-speed on the latest technology and committed to continuing education.”
Gottwald explained the importance of training and education as illustrated by the Gallup findings: “To put it another way, pool installers and the recommendations of other pool owners are the leading influences on pool installation decisions. If a pool owner loses trust through a bad retail or service professional experience, research tells us it will negatively influence the likelihood of another consumer installing a pool.”
Creating and maintaining loyalty is rooted in knowledge. APSP understands this and has positioned APSP University to deliver the necessary skills and technical knowledge to meet the demands of today’s consumer. As usual, APSP University’s course offerings at the 2016 International Pool|Spa|Patio Expo is robust and includes:
APSP Retail Boot CampThis must-attend 1-day course introduces the core principles of small business operations in the swimming pool business. Topics include customer service, financial operations and critical sales techniques that will have your retail team more efficient and effective.
Pool & Spa Construction CourseThis course is perfect for novice and experienced pool and spa builders, as well as designers who need to know more about pool and spa construction. This course takes you through the APSP Builders Manual and gives you key information to conform to industry standards.
Can You on What Consumers Demand?deliver
7
The course covers all types of pool and spa water feature construction, and reviews the construction process in detail from design and layout to pool and spa start-up. It’s an excellent preparation for the CBP Certified Building Professional® exam.
Certified Maintenance Specialist CourseThis course is for individuals who are interested in learning more about pool and spa maintenance basics. There are no prerequisites and new and seasonal employees are welcome. Students will learn key concepts including safety, pool circulation and filtration, maintenance, and water quality.
Certified Service Technician CourseThis course is for experienced pool and spa service and repair technicians looking to focus and complete their skill set. Key concepts including safety, water quality, structures and finishes, circulation, hydraulics and electrical requirements will be covered.
Certified Hot Tub Technician CourseThis course will focus on the specialized and unique needs of technicians who service and repair different makes and models of portable hot tubs. Hot tub installation, structures and finishes, service and maintenance, water chemistry, seasonal care and troubleshooting will be addressed.
Through APSP University and its certification programs, pool professionals can demonstrate a commitment to training and education, and deliver the highest quality of service to the consumer and it shows. According to P.K. Data, from 2014-2015, APSP members saw their business increase an average of 11.4 percent, compared with 4.6 percent for non-members.
“We have a responsibility to make sure the customer experience instills confidence,” Gottwald said. “APSP University is open to everyone in the industry who desires training rooted in best practices and standards, as we are the only industry organization recognized by the American National Standards Institute to develop and promote national standards for pools, hot tubs, and spas.”

Divide & Conquerby Scott Cohen
The biggest trend in backyard home-improvements is the breaking up of backyard space into different outdoor rooms. It’s not just about the pool and spa anymore, as home owners are asking their designers and
contractors to help them divide the backyard into distinctly different outdoor spaces. Clients today want outdoor living rooms, dining rooms, and outdoor kitchens, in addition to their swimming pool decks. Savvy designers of pools and spas can capitalize on this growing trend by learning more about concrete patio sizing, flooring finishes, flow through the yard, patio covers, bbq counter construction, and the clients’ entertaining needs.
At my firm, The Green Scene Landscaping and Pools in California, we design and create many different types of outdoors rooms, and I’ll be discussing them all in my outdoor room seminar, “Design and Build the Ultimate Outdoor Living Experience: Outdoor Rooms and Patio Sizing (Parts 1 and 2)” on Thursday, November 3.
For a truly ultimate outdoor living experience, you will need to add an outdoor kitchen. People have always congregated around food and drink, and outdoor kitchens take advantage of this tendency. Whether it’s a night of revelry with a crowd, a relaxing evening with the family, or a romantic alfresco dinner for two, the outdoor kitchen serves as a natural gathering space that draws people together. There’s another reason outdoor kitchens are booming: property value. Homeowners recognize that an outdoor kitchen adds significant value to a home with a comparatively low investment. In some areas, outdoor kitchens have even become an expected amenity for a comfortable home. In others, an outdoor kitchen is a standout feature, offering a valuable edge in any housing market.
The outdoor kitchen is the fastest growing home-improvement category. We will be discussing design and construction of bbq counters, outdoor living rooms, and dining areas in my seminar “Build the Ultimate Outdoor Living Experience”
To keep everyone in the right zone, it’s important to choose a layout that not only works well for cooking but also makes for a fun, comfortable party. The grill itself is often the center attraction. Make sure there’s plenty of space nearby for several people to sit and watch the action. “Nearby” doesn’t mean “next to”. Your guests shouldn’t feel like they’re risking singed eyebrows when they’re supervising the cook.

In addition to spaces at a bar or dining counter, many backyard kitchens include additional areas for dining and relaxing. Don’t think you need a space big enough to accommodate all your guests in one large expanse. Instead, think about human party behavior and observe it at the next get-together you attend. Instead of gathering in one big ‘herd’, people at a larger party will naturally group together in small conversational clusters. Design your dining and mingling areas around this tendency by providing several outdoor rooms to accommodate small groups. A series of interconnected spaces is a better fit for many yards and helps create the ultimate outdoor living experience.
Provide destinations in the garden by connecting these gathering spots with welcoming pathways (this is called ‘wayfinding’ in the designer biz). Use focal points, seat walls, fountains, ponds, arbors, and fragrant plantings to create interest at different locations and draw guests out into the yard space.
OUTDOOR DINING ROOM Size this patio based on the number of people you plan to host regularly. A 48” round table can seat 6-8 people depending on the size of the chairs. The minimum patio diameter that will accommodate one 48” round table is 10’ 6”. This allows enough space to pull out chairs, but not much walk-around space. For larger patios designed to accommodate more than one table, leave a three foot buffer zone to accommodate passing guests. A minimum 12’ to 14’ diameter allotment for each 48” round table will provide this buffer.
OUTDOOR LIVING ROOMA Living Room Patio - Size this patio around the furniture you’ll use here. A big trend in outdoor living room furniture is using “deep seating” patio furniture. Deep seating mimics your indoor couch, love seats, lounge chairs, and coffee table styling. A good rule of thumb is to size living room areas at approximately 16’ by 18’. Where possible, leave a 3’ pathway clear of furniture to allow for good traffic flow through the garden.
BISTRO PATIOMany homeowners and their guests appreciate a small, more intimate space to enjoy a meal for two or a quiet conversation. A small patio that accommodates a two-seater bistro table works well here and can be created almost anywhere including a side yard or in little back corner destination spots. A good standard size for a patio area like this is about 6’ to 7’ in diameter.
As you can see, there are many options for turning an outdated or bare landscape into a backyard retreat. All it takes is a designer who has the ability, product and design know-how, and an experienced, licensed contractor to make your dream a reality.
I like to provide my clients with a one-stop shop. As a licensed landscape, general, and pool contractor, my firm is able to build the swimming pool, spa, and entire dream yard. I don’t advocate working outside your area of expertise, but it’s a good idea to partner up with a landscape firm or general contractor to be able to offer your clients a complete outdoor package.
Scott Cohen is an acclaimed garden designer, author, and licensed contractor in landscape, pool and general construction whose award-winning work has been frequently showcased on HGTV and in numerous books and national magazines. A charismatic and entertaining speaker, Cohen is also the author of 10 design and construction books, including the award-winning Outdoor Kitchen Design Workbook, Poolscapes, The Candid Contractor, and Outdoor Fireplaces and Fire Pits.
A 3-time Masters of Design Award winner, Scott has been featured on several Home and Garden Television shows such as Cool Pools and Get Out, Way Out! He also serves as a member of the California Contractors Board Industry Expert Program, as a construction defect expert witness, and continues to lobby for ethical Workers’ Compensation practices in the construction industry.

The pool, hot tub and aquatic industry exists to help more people live happier and healthier lives. Every segment of the aquatics industry contributes to this effort: manufacturers and distributors, designers and builders, service companies, retailers, and aquatic facility managers and operators.
Industry growth is entirely dependent on three factors that prevent contraction and build demand:
• Enabling people who wouldn’t normally get in the water to start doing so. In other words, teaching people to swim.
• Encouraging people to participate in activities in or around the water. In other words, prevent drowning, disease, injuries, and bad experiences.
• Motivating people who do participate in water activities to engage in them more frequently.
NSPF and Genesis aim to be the preeminent educators in the market, with training that is technically sound, convenient, and beautifully designed. We provide educational products and certification programs that help keep pools safer and keep pools open, and that encourage more people to participate in activities in and around the water.
Any environment that contains water presents a hazard. It is important to make all water environments safer to reduce the inherent risk. To achieve this, NSPF trains about 35,000 professionals each year, to better enable them to help make pools safer and more efficient. NSPF training reaches students through various mediums: the classroom, online courses, and through blended format training. Many materials are available in Spanish. Each year, Genesis training helps hundreds of designers and builders create pools that are more efficient, soundly designed, and beautiful. Genesis students aspire to become members of the Society of Watershape Designers™ – progressing from SWD “Associate” to “Registered” and, ultimately, “Masters” in the field of pool design and construction. All NSPF/Genesis training complies with International Association of Continued Education Training (IACET) educational standards, earning students Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
NSPF and Genesis also invest heavily in building industry demand. The organizations have funded over $2 million in research on the health benefits of aquatics. They collaborate with many organizations that promote water activity, including Water Safety USA (comprised of 13 leading aquatic safety organizations,) USA Swimming’s Swim Today program, and the Water Quality & Health Council, among others. NSPF’s Step Into Swim™ initiative is working effectively around the country to create one million swimmers in ten years. And, our social media promotion and print advertising shines a favorable light on the value of pools and hot tubs.
Thank you to all of the individuals who choose NSPF and Genesis training for personal and professional enhancement. And, thank you to all sponsors of our programs. NSPF and Genesis are committed to stewarding your investment to create a healthier and more prosperous future for aquatics.

Giving Back to the
industryThe PSP Expo is where the industry meets for business but we’re also proud to partner with organizations that support growth and assistance in the industry and community. When registering for the expo, consider a tax-deductible donation to one of these organizations:

The Step Into Swim™ Campaign is a 10-year initiative to create 1 million more swimmers. Organized by non-profit, 501(C)(3) National Swimming Pool Foundation®, the campaign raises funds that are directly given to leading learn-to-swim organizations. The Foundation has matched dollar for dollar every donation given in 2012. Supporters of the campaign believe that investing in the next generation of swimmers – for fun, for fitness, for family safety – and teaching people of all ages and ethnicities, is a necessary investment and will improve the health and future of our nation.
