Where would we be without our mothers? Abraham Lincoln once famously said, “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”
And to quote renowned French poet and novelist Victor Hugo, “A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them.”
Did you know that Mothers Day came into being due to the efforts made by two pioneering American women, Ms Julia Ward Howe and Ms Anna Jarvis in the late 19th century? The Resolution for having a dedicated Mother’s Day was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Mothers Day with joy and devotion.
One lucky Gazette reader will be celebrating too, with a Massage package compliments of Essential Bodyworks and the District Gazette. See page 3 to discover the winner of our “Love Your Mum Competition”.

SPOTLIGHT ON . . .
Naomi Thomas – Spa de VieSpa de Vie is the sensational new day spa in town, owned and
run by Naomi Thomas. Spa de Vie – Live Life Beautifully is aiming to make every person walk out feeling pampered and relaxed. Spa de Vie is a family owned and operated business. Naomi’s sister Kelsey is a Beauty Therapist in training. Naomi says Kelsey was the impetus for opening her own business. She wanted Kelsey to start her beauty therapy training in the family business so that Kelsey would love the work as much as Naomi does.
“Our number one priority is making our clients feel relaxed and happy by providing a friendly and welcoming atmosphere,” said Naomi. And to cater for all clients, the salon is open on Tuesday and Friday evenings until 8pm.
Naomi has been working in the beauty industry for just over 7 years and is very passionate about the industry. Over the years she has worked in several different types of salons which have inspired her to open her own.
Spa de Vie is a brand new spa with all new equipment. They have the latest in hair removal technology with IPL hair and skin rejuvenation. Unlike many of the current machines on the market, the girls at Spa de Vie are able to treat blonde hair, which until now has been unachievable with IPL. It is also TGA approved which is very important for clients’ safety. Electrolysis is also available for those few stubborn hairs that we all have and wish would disappear.
“At Spa de Vie our aim is for you to walk in as a client but walk out as a friend. As we are a family owned business we understand the importance of excellent customer service to ensure that every client feels like a part of the family,” said Naomi.
And who’s the best mum in the world? Naomi says her mum DEFINITELY is. The business wouldn’t have gotten off the ground if it wasn’t for Naomi’s wonderful mum. “Mum is a big part of this place. She was the driving force. She made it all happen!” said Naomi.

Is growing just for kids?
What a delight it is to meet a newborn baby. Then to watch them grow and learn new things, all the way to adulthood. It’s an extraordinary process, and one that I’ve marvelled at.The thing is, we might not grow ‘up’ any more
when we’re older (the challenge is not to grow ‘out’!) but we still have lots of opportunities to grow, and to learn new things, and become wiser. Now Jesus Christ used this picture of growing that we all know to describe what He offers all people. He told a grown man he had to be born again. A grown man! But he was talking about starting a new life with God through trusting Jesus. The picture is picked up in the rest of the Bible. God’s plan for people is to keep growing up. His goal is for us to grow mature as followers of Jesus. So no matter what your age and stage, God’s given us the chance to grow in a way that surpasses all others – as Growing followers of Jesus. If you’d like to know more about Growing as a follower of Jesus, why not join us at one of our services, or come along to Christianity Explored.Blessings, Rev Roger Cunningham

Dispelling the Myth – Only the rich need a financial planner
The greatest myth surrounding Financial Planning is that many believe that it is a luxury for the rich; this is definitely not the case.
The common misconception revolves around many believing the main role of the planner is to invest their money, with the logical conclusion, if I have no money I don’t need a financial planner. The truth is that Investment of funds is only one function of the financial planner. The role of the financial planner is to assist in identifying financial goals and develop strategies to effectively use your assets and income to achieve those goals. This is a broad all encompassing statement, but none the less true.
As all of us go through various life stages we enviably encounter life events, that the advice of a financial planner can make a real difference, things such as starting a career or being made redundant, saving for you children’s education or a first home, or even starting a family all have financial planning consequences surrounding taxation, social security and insurance. Proper financial advice at these times will help you achieve your goals.
These are only a few examples of life events that require financial planning advice. Our web page has many more examples and links to the advice that may be required. Please visit http://futurefinancialservices.com.au/life-events

Remember Mum With A Living Tribute
The popular ‘Trees for Mum’ event is on again and people of all ages are being encouraged to salute their mum by planting a tree for her on Mother’s Day.
It’s a special community event which encourages people of all ages to nurture the environment and remember their mum with a commemorative planting.
It will be held on Sunday 12 May from 9am–12 noon at Gibbes Street off Spencer St in Regentville. Access is only 600 metres south of the M4 and Mulgoa Rd intersection.
The Trees for Mum program started as a small event in 2002 and has grown into a national occasion.
Penrith Council started participating in this initiative in 2007 and has continued each year since with 900 trees and shrubs planted during that time.
To ensure there are enough plants on the day for everyone who comes, please register by calling 4732 8088 or email [email protected]

Make it a Classic Mother’s Day in Penrith!More than 125,000 people across Australia will participate in
the Mother’s Day Classic this year – and in 2013, the residents of Penrith can too!
The Mother’s Day Classic is the nation’s largest fun run/walk that raises money for breast cancer research. On Sunday 12 May, you can be a part of this special event by joining the inaugural Penrith team.
The Penrith Mother’s Day Classic walk in the park will start at 9:00am at Tench Reserve, Jamisontown on Sunday 12 May. The walk is 4km with scenic views of the Nepean River. Participants can register online at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au or from 8:00am on the day. Proceedings kick off at 8:30am with a welcome, memorial minute of silence and a warm-up. The walk commences at 9:00am.
There will be lots of great prizes to be won on the day including a Captain Cook Harbour Cruise, dinner vouchers and food hampers.
Hosting such a fantastic event in the local area is a great way to bring the community together to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.
“More than $14.8 million has been raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’ s research programs since the event’s inception and we are proud to host an event in Penrith and raise extra funds to help find a cure for breast cancer.”
Breast cancer affects women all around Australia and impacts on their lives as well as touching the lives of their family, friends and work colleagues. One in nine Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.
The funding raised by Women in Super’s Mother’s Day Classic has supported 18 researchers across Australia investigating all aspects of breast cancer. Research has led to improved detection and treatment for the disease resulting in a 27 per cent decrease in mortality since 1994.For Further Information call Megan Timbs – 0409 947 187www.mothersdayclassic.com.au

to wander dreamily in a delicious symphony of colour?Roses are considered to be the world’s most loved flower and
will cheer up a piece of your earth. Roses love a sunny position in rich soil, using well decayed manure and compost, water well especially during the summer blooming months.
Now is the ideal time to plant your choice of topiary, climbing, miniature, floribunda, hybrid or David Austin roses, as their display is well worth the effort. The most important thing about roses is… You have to make the time to stop and smell them.

Blue Mountains Crossing History Lesson A number of local school students will step back in time this
month for a unique look into what three early explorers went through as they departed on their famous journey and successful trek across the Blue Mountains in 1813.
The Yr 7 students, who took part in Council’s 2012 Junior Mayor Program, will retrace the steps of Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth by walking from the site of Blaxland’s Farm to the Nepean River on Saturday 11 May. This re-enactment trek is part of a program of commemorative events to celebrate the Bicentenary of the First European Crossing of the Blue Mountains.
Penrith City Mayor, Cr Mark Davies, said it’s important for local schoolchildren to understand and appreciate this significant milestone in Australia’s and Penrith’s history.
“The First European Crossing of the Blue Mountains has rightly earned its place in our nation’s history. If Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth hadn’t conquered the formidable Blue Mountains and discovered the grasslands and plains of western NSW, it’s doubtful that the colony would have survived,” Cr Davies said.

PARENTS’ CORNERArticle by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph:0409986121Email:[email protected] Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com
As promised, this month I provide an example of how to do “emotion coaching” when your child is angry.Manyparentsfinditdifficultto‘staywith’theirchildwhenheorshe
is angry. Sometimes the child is being what the adult believes to be illogicalorirrationalandfindsitdifficulttobesympatheticorempathicwith the child. This morning, I witnessed a child having a huge tantrum at the park. He went from 0 to 100 in seconds. To her credit, his Mum stayed very, very calm. She tried to redirect him with the iPhone, food, activity. She tried to get him to do some deep breathing, but he wasn’t calm enough for that yet. Then when that didn’t work, she warned him that she would smack his hand if he didn’t stop, telling him that he could be as loud as he wants at home, but not in public. Then she told him he would have to go and sit in the car (in the shade, with an adolescent present). He did quieten down after a while sitting in the car, but I heard him crying for Mummy. The Mum did her absolute best with what she knew, but distraction, redirection, smacks, and banishment didn’t sooth that agitated child brain. I wondered whether he might calm down if I were able to do emotion coaching with him.
Young children are not overly logical or rational. The part of the brain that controls logic and reasoning doesn’t start firing up until about the age of four (years that is), and continues developing until the age of 25 years. During adolescence, this part of the brain goes into hibernation for a while. So, if you are wondering why your children, big and small, don’t think things through at times, it’s because developmentally they are not ready! That’s why you need to be the bigger, stronger, wiser, and kind person for your children for a very long time.
Emotion coaching isn’t something you should do when you are in the red zone. You are not going to be particularly good at it if your emotions are activated. But, if you are feeling calm, give it a go.
Scene: (I’ve pinched this example from another parent): Child enjoys pressing the button to close the automatic garage door. However, the child also runs away from Mum once he is out of the car, which is a big concern for Mum. So, Mum says he can only close the garage door if he stays with Mum. On this occasion, the child ran off and Mum pressed the button to close the garage door. Child noticed what Mum had done, and got very angry that he had missed his opportunity to close the door.
Parent: “You are so very angry that you couldn’t close the door.” (Noticing the emotion.)
“You want me to open the door for you again so you can press the button.”
“You are screaming at me to open the door and stamping your feet.” (Reflecting what he was saying and observing what he was doing.)
“It’s such a big feeling.”“You are so, so mad. Your face is going red. Your fists are tight.”“Now you are starting to cry. You look so sad.”“Where do you feel the anger in your body? Where do you feel your
sadness?” (Locating the emotion in the body.)“I would feel sad too if I didn’t get to do something I wanted to do.”
(Empathising.)If your child hits you, then tell him that hitting is not ok. Hold his
hands gently so he can’t hit you. Repeat gently “It’s OK to be angry but not to hit. I won’t let you hit me.”
Crying is healing. If the child wants a hug, then offer a hug. Hugging releases a calming hormone in the brain called Oxytocin. Breathing is also very good. You can role model stress releasing or calming breaths for your child. You don’t need to explain what you are doing, the mirror neurones in your child’s brain will pick up on what you are doing.
When the child has calmed down, the parent can ask the child what he might need to do next time so he can press the button. (Exploring). This is not the time for a lecture. It’s a time to calmly and simply go through the rules about staying with Mum so the child can press the button.
On the next trip, I would remind the child about the rules before we reached home, just to give him a chance to get it right. That’s called ‘communicating expectations’ and I’ll write about that next month.

WHAT’S COOKING?Hey kids, want to spoil your mum with breakfast in bed this Mother’s Day? There’s nothing that mum would like more. Here are a couple of easy and lip-smacking recipes that will be sure to get you into her good books! Don’t forget her favourite cup of tea or coffee to accompany your gourmet breakie!
Mixed Berry PancakesIngredients • Serves 4 1 cup (250g) self-raising flour 1 egg1 1/2 cups (375ml) buttermilk 40g butter200g frozen mixed berries 1 cup (250ml) maple syrup1 vanilla bean, split Mixed berries, extra, to serveMethod1. Place the flour in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until well combined. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest.2. Melt half the butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spoon 1/4 cup (60ml) of pancake mixture into the pan and sprinkle with mixed berries. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear on the surface and pancakes are golden underneath. Turn and cook for 1 minute or until golden underneath. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Repeat with remaining batter and mixed berries, greasing pan between each batch.3. Place the maple syrup in a small saucepan. Use a small, sharp knife to scrape the vanilla seeds into the maple syrup and add the bean. Place over low heat and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes or until heated through.4. Place pancakes on serving plates and top with extra berries. Drizzle with maple syrup and serve immediately.
Banana and Cinnamon French ToastIngredients • Serves 4 3 eggs, lightly beaten1/2 cup milk1/4 cup cream1 teaspoon vanilla essence1 tablespoon icing sugar1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon4 x 2.5cm-thick slices brioche*2 tablespoons butter3 bananas, sliced lengthwaysPure maple syrup, to serveMethod1. Combine eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, icing sugar and cinnamon in a large jug. Whisk with a fork until well combined. Pour mixture into a shallow ceramic dish.2. Preheat oven to 180°C. Dip 2 brioche slices in milk mixture for 30 seconds to 1 minute each side or until well soaked. Hold over dish to drain. Heat 1 tablespoon butter in a large frying pan over medium heat until bubbling. Add soaked brioche. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes each side or until golden. 3. Transfer to a baking tray. Keep warm in oven. Repeat with remaining butter and brioche.4. Place French toast on plates. Top with banana. Drizzle with maple syrup and serve.*Brioche: a cross between a bread and a pastry, is made from a classic sweet French yeast dough. Its golden surface comes from the addition of sugar. Brioche gets its richness from butter and eggs. Look for it in the bakery section of your supermarket.Variation: You can use fruit bread or split hot cross buns instead of brioche. And, instead of banana, try topping brioche with raspberries, blueberries or sliced strawberries. Advert

THIS SPORTING LIFE Australian Team Selection for TupaeaFifteen year old basketball prodigy Tahlia Tupaea (Glenmore
Park) has taken another giant step in an already amazing basketball career, winning selection to the Australian Under 19 Women’s team (Gems) which will tour China in May this year.
Tupaea, who is a member of both the Penrith Panthers Under 18 and senior Waratah Championship League women’s teams, trialed with both the Australian Under 19 and Under 17 squads in 2012 and despite her tender years, has won selection into the older of the two Australian squads.
That selection will however have some unfortunate but perhaps expected consequences for someone of her tender years, with the youngster withdrawing from the NSW Under 18 Women’s team which will contest the Australian Championships later this month.
Given Tahlia has also just finished the 2012-2013 WNBL season as a member of the Sydney Uni Flames, her father Omar was understandably concerned over his daughter’s already torrid schedule, stating “We’ve withdrawn Tahlia from the Under 18 National Championships, due to the scheduling”.
“We discussed the situation with Basketball Australia and the logical decision was to withdraw Tahlia from the Nationals, as she will have enough to cope with already, including the flight to China and becoming familiar with the local food and environment”
“Perhaps most importantly, the break will ensure Tahlia can give hundred percent effort in China , rather than having to recover from first playing in a week-long tournament in Australia, having a couple of days rest, then flying off to China,” said Omar.
A further selection camp will be conducted 29 June - 2 July at Basketball Australia’s National Centre of Excellence at the AIS in Canberra.
The NSW players on the tour of China are Vanessa Panousis, NSWIS/Sydney Uni Flames WNBL / Sydney City Comets WCL; Maddison Penn, NSW/CoE Gosford City Rebels; Casey Samuels, Canberra Capitals WNBL / Hills District Hornets WCL; Tahlia Tupea, Sydney Uni Flames WNBL / Penrith Panthers WCL.
