Mall robberies: what todo and what not?Whilemall robberies seemtobe theorderof the day, it might be good to knowwhatto dowhen you find yourself in the unfor-tunate position of falling victim to suchan act.
In the past few months shopping centreslike Canal Walk, Tygervalley, Cape Gate,Somerset Mall, Zevenwacht Mall and Long-beach Mall made news headlines while tar-geted by armed robbers.
On home soil, Paarl Mall has also had itsfair share of robberies with especially cell-phone shops and electronic stores targeted.
But what do you do when you find yourselfin the middle of a robbery?
ER24 has had first hand experience withtreating injured patients and offering assist-ance to traumatised shoppers after such anordeal.
Henning Jacobs, trauma support coordina-tor at ER24, said the atmosphere at a shop-ping centre after a robbery is one of totalshock and fear.
“People do not know what to do. They can-not think straight. It is also quiet as peopleare afraid to make any noise. Some peoplecannot stop crying while others are numband do not want to say a word,” said Jacobs.
Headdedthat it takespeoplemonthstodealwith the fear they experienced.
When Jacobs and other ER24 counsellorsarrive on scene, traumatised people are de-briefed.
“People are told what emotions and reac-tions to expect following the incident and areprovided with coping skills.
“These coping skills are provided to helpthem vent their feelings and deal with theshock,” said Jacobs.
He said every victim of a mall robbery,
whether feeling “fine” or not, should go forcounselling. “It just gives them guidance onhow to cope with the aftermath of the inci-dent. There are cases where people experi-ence post traumatic stress, but this only be-comes evident a few weeks after the inci-dent,” said Jacobs.
If you find yourself in a mall robbery tryto stay calm. If possible, move away from theincident. Try to find a safer place to take shel-ter. Do not try to be a hero. You could be in-jured or killed.
If you are near an exit and it is safe to doso, leave the mall immediately. Phone forhelp if you are in a position to do so and giveas much information as possible.
Communication officer of Cleveland Po-lice, Constable Mpho Mashakane, has the fol-lowing advice:
) Shoppers should be more vigilant whenleaving parking areas and be on the lookoutfor any suspicious activities.
) Be aware of people around you and any-one following you in the parking area.
) Should criminals demand your vehicleduring a robbery, hand your keys to themimmediately. Your life and that of your fami-ly is more important than the vehicle.
) Do not confront anyone yourself. If yoususpect anything illegal report it to the secu-rity staff.
) Do not make any eye contact and do notact aggressively.
) Avoid being alone in high-target storesaround opening and closing times.
) Always let someone in your family knowwhere you are going and how long you willbe gone.
People can phone ER24 on 084 124 for trau-ma counselling.

Drakenstein Gazette General - Algemeen Friday 6 March 20154
SSttaarr SSiiggnnssStar Signs22 December to21 JanuaryCAPRICORN
Getting what you really want and moving toward achieving thethings which are important to you may involve surrendering
something or eliminating something from your life at this time.Perhaps an attitude, a situation, or an attachment that has beenimpeding you is now released. You feel free to concentrate on the
things that are most important to you now.
21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS
Self-confidence, physical energy, and courage runhigh, so this is a fine time to undertake any project
or challenge that confronts you, especially if itinvolves competition or asserting yourself
vigorously. You are inclined to take charge orassume a leadership role at this time.
20 February to21 MarchPISCES
Physically, you need to be gentle with yourself and take care notto dissipate your energy reserves. Your imagination can run wild
now, and you want to act out a fantasy or strange desire -something you normally would have the good sense not to
attempt. However, if you are an artist, this is a very inspired, fertile time for you.
21 March to21 AprilARIES
You are highly ambitious, full of optimism and enthusiasm for newenterprises and plans. In fact, you may be foolishly overconfident andtake on more challenges than you can really meet. You are inclined totake physical risks, gamble, speculate, and to act on faith and belief inyourself. This can, in fact, be a very productive time for you if you can
keep your expectations within reasonable bounds.
21 April to21 MayTAURUS
You see the superficiality, the flaws, and the foolishness or impracticalityin others' plans. Also, communicating with others is difficult now, and
people resist what you are saying. You feel more inhibited anduncommunicative, and you sense that others are not receptive.
Frustrating conversations and the feeling that you are coming acrossnegatively are possible now, so keep your thoughts to yourself.
22 June to23 JulyCANCER
You are craving emotional excitement, stimulation, and something new and alive. This is a time for
music, dancing, and being joyfully spontaneous. Yoursocial inhibitions are loosened, and you may be
tempted to have a wild flirtation or to act in a ratherreckless way in a relationship.
21 May to22 JuneGEMINI
Today it is easy for you to concentrate on your work, to eliminate whatis superfluous or distracting you from what you really need to do. Youhave the self-control and discipline to apply yourself to tasks that you
may have been avoiding. You want to put your affairs in order andhave a greater tolerance for tedium than usual. This is a good time to
tackle mundane chores and practical business.
23 Julie to24 AugustLEO
You are craving emotional excitement, stimulation, andsomething new and alive. This is a time for music, dancing, and
being joyfully spontaneous. Your drive for personal power, achievement, or control over your life is very strong at this time. The tyrant in you emerges, and you can be excessively willful, domineering, or compulsive about doing what you want to.
24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO
This is a favorable time to take a short vacation or pleasure trip, especially to visit people you really enjoy. The tone of this time is
light, friendly, and easy. Positive connections are made withothers, and you may meet a new friend. You may also want tocall or write someone you love, simply to cheer them up or tell
them you love them.
23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA
You feel quite relaxed and carefree, and this would be a splendid timefor a vacation. Laziness, self-indulgence, and expecting everything to
work out well with no effort on your part are negative possibilities now.You feel very lucky and you are likely to be lax or extravagant with yourmoney. Material benefits are, indeed, likely at this time, but beware of
being overly generous or depending too much on Lady Luck.
23 October to23 NovemberSCORPIO
You are mentally restless and can not concentrate well on yourimmediate, familiar tasks. You are not inclined to disciplineyour mind or focus on practical matters, unless there is an
element of gambling, play, or risk-taking involved. Readingsomething that is mind expanding, taking a trip, or planning
a vacation is favored at this time.
23 November to22 DecemberSAGITTARIUS
Right now, you will be tempted to do something for pleasure whichyou ordinarily wouldn't enjoy or even be interested in. Influencesfrom a lover or friend pull you in a direction that is a bit off the
beaten track for you. If you goof off or choose to indulge yourself, there will be some form of pay back later. Beware of indulgences that
compromise your values or integrity.

Tik: is your child at risk?Kids love it. It’s easily accessible, relativelycheap and can even be made in your kitchen. It’s called crystal meth or “tik”. But it is one ofthe most lethal and addictive drugs around.Tik (crystal meth) is a buzzword in drug cir-
cles and has becomeincreasingly popularamongst school chil-dren. The drug has re-cently sparked a hugeresponse from healthauthorities.Far more is being
done to clamp downon tik dealing than onany other drug inSouth Africa. It’s also known as
tuk, crystalmeth, tuk-tuk, crystal, straws, globes, krank, ice, Ti-na,meth, glass, cristy, quartz, ice cream orcrank.According to Grant Jardine, director of the
Cape Town Drug Counselling Centre (CTDCC),the increased rate of crystal meth usage is dra-matic. “It is something we haven’t seen before. It is the greatest challenge the CTDCC has everhad to face.”Tik is typically sold in straws, one of which
could cost you between R15 and R30.The drug can be found in many forms, from
afinepowdertolargercrystals.Itcanbesnorted, orally ingested, injected or smoked – smokingbeing the most common method. The ingredients are easily accessible and
many manufacturers need nothing more thantheir kitchens to concoct large quantities.Recipes are plentiful and easily available, andyou don’t have to be a rocket scientist to followthem.Accordingtousers, thedruggivesanimmedi-

You the entrepreneur: Competence and characterDAVID MALHERBE
Any business owner would like to achievethe best possible results in his or her busi-ness. Therefore, it can be understood thatbusiness owners will be on the lookout forthe most competent people to employ whenrecruiting staff. The better the quality ofwork employees can deliver, the better forthe company.
Unfortunatelyweoftenplace all the emphasison competence only, without considering a pro-spective employee’s character. Employees maybe very good in executing their jobs, but if theylack good character, for instance they are steal-ingorarefrequentlyabsent, itcanbetothedetri-ment of the organisation.Competence and character are like the two
wheels of a bicycle. They are equally important
and the same attention should be given to each.Employees are often appointed for competenceand later need to be let go because of character-related failures.Competent employees with poor character
qualities make for an organisation that resem-bles apenny farthingbicyclewithonebigwheeland one small one.Character refers to the qualities built into an
individual’s life that determine his or her re-sponse, regardless of circumstances. Thereforegoodcharacterbasicallymeans“doing the rightthing when nobody is looking.”Lack of character in an organisation is evi-
denced by negligence, low productivity, qualityproblems, workers having their own agendas, etc. If such problems have a negative influenceon your company, it is necessary to implementa strategy to develop good character.First it isnecessary tonotonlyemphasiseper-
formance output, but also values and characterqualities thatwill beacceptable in thecompany.Train managers and employees to establish aculture of good character.Secondly, enforce principle-based policies to
establish an organisational culture that is builton good character. Promote these principlesthrough every communication with employeesandmake good character an essential trait dur-ing the hiring process. And finally, give recognition for good charac-
ter and not only for reaching performance tar-gets.Only a couple of employeesusually receiverecognition for delivering outstanding output, butmostofthemcanberecognisedforsomegoodcharacter qualities e.g. alertness, loyalty, punc-tuality, etc.Source: Character First*DavidMalherbe is a business and career con-
