Killing the National Bank Plan: to move federal funds from the National Bank TO

State Banks. (Pet & Wildcat ) Sec. of Treasury McLane: refused & is fired; Jackson hires

William Duane but has to fire him too. Roger Taney- is hires b/c he agrees to do what Jackson

wants. Public funds no longer deposited in Bank of U.S. Pet Banks (Girard Bank of Philadelphia ) by 1833 23 banks. Banks: make unsecure loans & print too much currency (PANIC)

Controversial PoliciesTexas• Mexico won independence from

Spain in 1821.• To encourage settlement,

authorities allowed immigration from the US. (1834- 30,000)

• Texas forces fought & won the Revolution in 1835–36 against Santa Anna.

• The Republic of Texas applied to become a State but was denied by Jackson b/c it would upset the balance of power.

Specie Circular• Executive order that required

buyers of government lands to pay in gold or silver coins.

• Result- demand for specie, many banks could not exchange

• Caused the Panic of 1837 which threw the national economy into a deep depression.

• Damage was blamed on Martin Van Buren, who took office in 1837
