Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) is the name Yamaha has given
to a design philosophy whose goal is to maximize digital quality while minimizing analog
circuitry. The culmination of the best digital engineering and design possible today, it brings
together several key elements to create the best-sounding, easiest-to-use A/V components
available. In the RX-Z9, Digital ToP-ART can be divided into three categories.
From digital input, through digital processing, to amplification, maximum signal quality is maintained
every step of the way.
Pure Direct provides the shortestpossible signal path for 2-channel ormulti-channel analog inputs, with nosignal processing and no display.Straight outputs the original analog ordigital signal without any post-processing. Direct Stereo provides adirect connection for stereo input,

High Performance DigitalCircuitryThe RX-Z9 employs a wide array ofsophisticated technology, beginningwith Burr-Brown 192-kHz/24-bitdigital-to-analog converters for all 11channels with DSD (Direct StreamDigital) compatibility. An Accurate-Touch Volume Control is also used forall channels (Yamaha YAC520 LSIs).The digital bass/treble tone controlshave turnover frequencies for mainL/R and center channels. 8-channelanalog input signals are processedby 192kHz A/D conversion for highsound quality (1-bit direct conversionfor SACD and DVD-Audio). Allcircuitry is on a 4-layer processingboard with fully shielded cabinet forreduced digital interference. Thereceiver also offers i.LINK (IEEE1394)compatibility.
Choice of Signal Paths forHigher Sound QualityThe RX-Z9 provides a choice of fivespecialized signal paths for obtainingthe purest signal quality possible.
Burr-Brown 192 kHz/24 Bit PCM1792DACsThe PCM1792 is a high-performance,precision 24-bit BiCMOS Sign-MagnitudeDAC with ultra-low distortion of only0.0008% (K-grade THD + N) and S/N ratioof 120dB. It offers superior low levellinearity, with excellent full-scaleperformance under varying operatingconditions. Its major benefit is performingaccurate sound field reproduction for highquality multi-channel reproduction such asDolby Digital and DTS.
The RX-Z9 not only delivers the highest level of sound quality
with a dimmed display. 2-ChannelStereo processes the multichannelsignal and outputs it via 2-channels,for those with a two-speaker system. And the iLink connection is for multi-channel digital music signals (DVD-Audio and SACD).

High-Definition CINEMA DSPCircuitry The RX-Z9 has six times greater DSPcapacity than previous models, thanksto an increase from 48kHz A/Dconverters to 96kHz/24-bit types thatcan accept 96kHz analog signals fordirect digital conversion andprocessing. Higher density processingenables approximately triple theamount of early reflection data to behandled, for significantly richersurround sound performance. The RX-Z9 also employs 192kHz/24-bit D/Aconversion and DSP processing andYamaha’s 32-Bit Floating-PointQuantization System LSIs (YSS-930 x4) for high precision decoding of DolbyDigital, DTS Digital Surround, DTS96/24, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1, DTS-ESMatrix 6.1, DTS Neo:6 and Dolby ProLogic II formats. There are 51 surroundprograms available, with 71 variations, including Quad-Field CINEMA DSPprograms for 6.1-Channel DigitalSurround. SILENT CINEMA forsurround sound through headphonesand Virtual CINEMA DSP for two-speaker systems are also included.

a high-signal-resolution analogdesign inconjunction withan ultra-precisedigital controlcircuit (Yamahaoriginal YAC-520LSIs) for allchannels. Thewide control range extends from –80dBto +16.5dB, with narrow 0.5dB stepsthroughout the entire range for delicatecontrol, even at low volumes.
4-Layer DSP Processing BoardAll of the DSP IC chips and relatedcircuitry are located together on a 4-layer board, which provides a numberof advantages. The dimensions aresmaller (2/3 previous types), so signalpaths are shorter and there is morespace for the large power supplycomponents. Digital interference isreduced and impedance is lower aswell.
Accurate, Adjustable Lip-SyncThe YSS-930 LSI in the RX-Z9provides accurate synchronization ofimages and sound, known as “lip-sync.” Most audio LSIs do not havethe necessary speed and precision tohandle this, but with the YSS-930, notonly has accurate lip-sync beenachieved, but its parameters can beadjusted by the user.
Digital Tone ControlsDigital tone controls are provided forleft, right and center channels, allowing a much greater degree ofcontrol over the front sound field.

High Current Amplification Achieves Low Impedance/High
The Importance of High CurrentAlthough power rating is often the firstthing people look at in a receiver, highpower output does not necessarilymean good sound. High current level isa much more important factor. Yamahareceivers has always had fairly highcurrent levels, but with the RX-Z9, wehave further improved this performance.
What It DoesIn brief, Yamaha High CurrentAmplification achieves low impedance, high current power from input (powersupply circuit) to output (speakerterminals). This drives the speakersmuch more smoothly and dynamically, for better sound from all sources, including 2-channel audio.
Specific ImprovementsThe first problem to be overcome was
the difference in voltage that ordinaryreceivers suffer between the powersupply and amplifier circuits, causedby current fluctuations. This was solvedby using custom-made, high-gradeblock electrolytic capacitors and acopper grip for one-point grounding.Another current drop is generally seenbetween the amplifier circuit and thespeaker terminals, caused by thecables, speaker output relays, coppercircuit boards, and so on. To increasecurrent here, we used an extra-large,low-impedance transformer and gold-plated speaker relay contacts.
9-Channel High Power, DiscreteAmplifier Configuration
The RX-Z9 delivers a huge 170W to eachof seven channels (two front, one center, two surround and two surround back), aswell as 50W to the two presence (front
effect) channels. This is more thanenough to fill even the largest roomswith vibrant music and Richter-scalesound effects. 6-4 mixdown is alsoprovided, for enjoying 6-channel inputsources from four or five speakers youalready have on hand with or withoutsubwoofer. And also The high currentamplification system uses symmetricaldrive and a full push-pull circuitconfiguration with a complementary FETinput stage. A large torrodial transformerand large capacity block chemicalcondenser (28,000µF) ensure a stablepower supply.
High Dynamic Power CapabilityThe RX-Z9 is capable of delivering largeamounts of reserve power for accuratereproduction of the high energy peaksthat are especially prevalent in digitalaudio sources. This emphasizes themusic’s dynamic qualities and providesa sharper sound image.
Linear Damping Level variations due to high ampimpedance tend to reduce an amplifier’sdamping factor, and frequencyvariations cause it to fluctuate. Thiscircuit cancels the effect of thesevariations, maintaining a high, stabledamping factor, for superior articulation

The voltage (A) of Block ElectrolyticCapacitors and voltage (B) of PowerTransistor Collector should be ideally at thesame level. However, when the currentbecome large, there will be a big differencein the level of each voltages.
