Turf Talk
Happy Holidays. December normally begins the winter maintenance schedule for the golf course maintenance team. Final clean up on those pesky leaves happens and pre-emerge and post-emerge weed applications are made to the roughs during this month. Tree removal will begin as ground and weather conditions favor. The two large oaks below the putting green are coming out this winter. The removal of these trees will help clear the view from the back-patio area. The staff will spend bad weather days indoors tearing down and restaining all of the on-course furniture. Each piece is taken apart, sanded, a fresh coat of stain is applied and the piece is put back together. This process helps preserve the wood piece from decay while keeping them looking fresh.
As I write this insert, we are in the process of finishing up the new irrigation install to the roughs right of hole #8. This area gets dry during the summer months and now we will be able to apply ample amounts of irrigation water prior to the drought stress period providing better quality turf.
Wintertime boasts the conditions for frost formation. Cold, clear nights allow for frost to form on all turf surfaces which means that golf cannot be played until the frost has time to be burned off by the sun. We realize this is inconvenient to you as a golfer, but it is for the betterment of the turf. Frost is frozen dew that surrounds the leaf blades of grass plants. When a golfer walks on frost, the sharp edges of the ice crystals puncture a hole in the cells of the leaf blade causing the plant to turn black and die. If this was allowed all winter long, the greens would have damaged turf on them in the shapes of footprints. Please call the proshop to determine if a frost delay is underway.
I would like to close by wishing each of you a very happy holiday season. My staff and I would like to thank you for your continued support of the golf course at Evansville Country Club. You, as members, should already be eagerly anticipating the 2020 golf season. We hope to see you then!
Respectfully,
Jeff Sexton, CGCS
We are thrilled to report our club had another great year financially. Revenues increased in most areas of the club. To date, ala carte dining is up 18% over last year. Revenues at the ½ way house are up an incredible 23%. We expect a net profit of over $100,000 for the fourth year in a row in our Food and Beverage operation, 70% of clubs lose money in their Food and Beverage operation so this puts us into elite company compared to other Country Clubs. Pro shop sales are on their way to a record year with $500,000 in revenue beating our previous record of $375,000 set in 2018. We set another all-time record with 105 new members so far this year.
We kick off the Christmas season with our spectacular Santa Brunch on Sunday, December 8. Come visit with Santa’s reindeer, as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus! We now have a fast pass system to reduce your wait time for pictures. Reservations are limited for our elegant Candlelight Christmas Eve Buffet. All of our tables will be adorned with candles. Our Buffet will feature filet mignon and shrimp cocktail this year. Please make reservations for you and your family for these two events to make lasting family memories. Lindsay Aull and her talented helpers have turned the club into a fabulous Christmas showcase. The decorations are better than ever with more poinsettias, sparkle and stunning back drops for your Holiday gatherings. Come out and enjoy your club and catch the Christmas spirit.
New Year’s Eve is sure to be another awesome event. We have Al Paris and The Heartbreakers from Atlanta (Al Paris is a former lead singer from Kool and the Gang which is known for their hit song Celebration). We will have amazing food, complimentary house wine, a late night snack and a champagne toast along with Jeremy, Micah, Eric and Blake making your favorite cocktails. New Year’s Eve always sells out fast, so make your plans with us soon for the best night of the year!
Last, I would like to offer the most heartfelt “Thank You” to all of the members who contributed to the employee Christmas bonus. Our hard working and dedicated employees that are often out of sight, such as dishwashers, maintenance crew, housekeeping, grounds crew, cooks, bakers and office professionals truly appreciate your kindness and generosity. It does not go unnoticed and it brings great cheer so our staff all year long. Thank you for a wonderful 2018. We hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
