Cuchiverachi Water ProjectAgua Para Vivir[water for life]

Our design consists of several parts:

•A water supply system incorporating a spring catchment, a settling tank, and a storage tank•A personalized water purification process consisting of biosand filtration and bleach disinfection•An irrigation system which utilizes a rain catchment system for the community trees and vegetable garden•Improving sanitation by providing designs for latrine pits and access to educational materials. Included are designs for a hot water system, which should help promote showering/bathing

Objectives

The Design

The medical missions organization “Salud Para Suchil” has reported many cases of illness related to tainted drinking water in the Copper Canyon region of Mexico. Our project focuses on the village of Cuchiverachi, which is comprised of about 140 indigenous Tarahumaran people.

The project objectives were as follows:Primary Objective – Provide clean water to the dormitory

Secondary Objective – Improve the sanitation and hygiene practices of the villagers
