The Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) Pediatric Assembly is pleased to announce that Dr Allan Coates is the recipient of the 2010 Victor Chernick Award. Established in 2009, the Victor Chernick Award recognizes individuals for lifetime achievement in the field of pediatric respirology.
Dr Coates completed an engineering degree, studied medi-cine at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec), received clin-ical training at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (Montreal, Quebec) and completed a research fellowship at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, London, United Kingdom. He led a distinguished career in pediatric respirology, serving at both the Montreal Children’s Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto, Ontario). His eminent career in research contributed to the advancement of knowledge in areas such as drug delivery by aerosol, long-term sequelae of newborn lung disease, cystic fibrosis, and lung func-tion testing in children and adults. Dr Coates was recently named Chair of the CTS Pulmonary Function Standards Committee.
The Victor Chernick Award was presented to Dr Coates at the CTS Pediatric Assembly’s annual meeting in Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 29, 2010.

L’assemblée pédiatrique de la Société canadienne de thoracolo-gie (SCT) est fière d’annoncer que le docteur Allan Coates est titulaire du prix Victor Chernick 2010. Créé en 2009, le prix Victor Chernick rend hommage à des individus pour les réalisa-tions d’une vie en pneumologie pédiatrique.
Le docteur Coates a obtenu un baccalauréat en génie, étudié la médecine à l’Université McGill (Montréal, Québec), fait sa formation clinique à L’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants (Montréal, Québec) et effectué un postdoctorat de recherche à la Royal Post Graduate Medical School du Hammersmith Hospital de Londres, en Angleterre. Il a mené une éminente carrière en pneumologie pédiatrique à L’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants et au Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto, Ontario). Sa presti-gieuse carrière en recherche a contribué à l’évolution des con-naissances dans des domaines comme la prestation des médicaments en aérosol, les séquelles à long terme des maladies pulmonaires du nouveau-né, la fibrose kystique et les explora-tions fonctionnelles respiratoires chez les enfants et les adultes. Le docteur Coates a récemment été nommé président du comité des normes de la fonction pulmonaire de la SCT.
Le prix Victor Chernick a été présenté au docteur Coates lors du congrès annuel de l’assemblée pédiatrique de la SCT, qui avait lieu le 29 avril 2010 à Halifax, en Nouvelle-Écosse.
